  1. Some more ECML photos today, this time at Swayfield - which as we all know is on Stoke Bank between Peterborough and Grantham.

J2049 - only 19 candidates. D prefix. Last digit possibly 6, might be D5516 (but very much a longshot).

    J3216 - I agree with 274.

J5056 - too easy for a proper Spot-the-Deltic, it would be like a Spot-the-Ball with the ball still there!

  2. Many thanks for the information about the tablet catcher recess in the Class 20s.

Now for today's photos, all taken at Southside which as you all know is (and the junction was) south of Warkworth on the ECML in Northumberland.

And can anyone have a guess at the Deltic identity in C5160. I enlarged the photo, but can’t quite manage to make out either the name or number.

    With warmest regards,

    Rob.

I think the candidates based on the name are either 55005 or 55010, the latter having only one nameplate at this time. Number is indistinct but last digit looks to be same as first and lettering a better match for 55005, so that's my choice.

  3. Photos taken on visits to Newcastle in 1974 and the 1980s today.

I always enjoy looking at my older photos to see how much things have changed over the years - and not just on the railway.

    J3717:

Peak is clearly 45 002, helpfully renumbered at both ends, with class 03 lurking at the top.

    J3719:

Second set does not look to be a class 101.

  4. The Grantham to Nottingham line again today at Bottesford.

Identifying the first loco should be easy but it's not. It might be 2000x, however last digit is barely visible. Clues to the ID are dents in the cab door below the handle and the two marks on the solebar, if that helps any!

  5. Love todays photos especially J657 with the brake tender. The garage reminds me of my dads old garage which looked just like that but had s Ford Anglia Van parked next to it back in the mid 70's.

I do like a green EE Type 4 with discs. The dog was evidently not a trainspotter, nevertheless almost certainly a wagger!

I think the garage was a prefabricated one, the 'rays of the sun ' pattern being the company's trademark. For some reason, the name 'Atcost', or something similar, comes to mind. The Wolseley/ Riley would make a nice cameo, though I never remember one as colourful as that.

1092 EL is a Bournemouth registration and four numbers followed by two letters is a rare combination, apparently.

  6. Ratcliffe on Soar on the Midland Railway for today's photo selection.

David. I would like to submit my entry into the "Identify the Peak" competition for photo J5300. I submit that is is 45144 and produce this link as evidence, based on patterns of damage to the paint on the nose. https://flic.kr/p/rcxas5

    Paul J.

I agree J5300 is 45144, based on number 451x4 and nameplate a good match for Royal Signals.

J5992 has an easier number to read, I think, most likely 45119.

  7. D9021?

I think I can make out the tell-tale sign of bolts on the cab roof where the roof mounted air horns were originally mounted on D9019, D9020 and D9021.

The double line nameplate rules out D9020 NIMBUS.

There is a regimental crest above the nameplate, but that doesn’t help as both D9019 and D9021 carried a crest.

However there looks to be more red on the lower half of the nameplate either side of a single central word as if it says:

    ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND

             HIGHLANDER

    Like this: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/uploads/monthly_03_2014/post-13196-0-57109400-1394743452.jpg

    Rather than:

                ROYAL

    HIGHLAND FUSILIER

    like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/Carried_with_pride-_'Royal_Highland_Fusilier'_nameplate_-_panoramio.jpg

And finally "D9021" not just "9021" as, according to Chronicles of Napier, the "D" prefix was still carried in March 1970 but had been removed by May 1970.

    Am I right?

Thanks Dave F for scanning all of the amazingly evocative pictures on this thread which bring back fond distant memories from early childhood.

    Cheers

    Tom.

Correct, well done. J2085 must be D9021.

It was the only Deltic with nameplate lettering longer on top row than bottom and number is too long to be plain 9021.
