I know I know more coach pictures apologies but the sun was out and I figured I would get some better detailed shots of them now with the fabulous decals from Ian! Not perfect by a long shot but hopefully as I get to build more and more I will try to push the quality
Still have 3 or 4 more to build! I know its gone up since my initial 5 coach train I had planned, but really been enjoying building these and hope to have a more detailed explanation of the process later on if anyone is mildly interested in reading :)

I have to say I find Vallejo black grey the most useful colour in my paint collection I often use this to paint all my underframes as I think black is bit too dark personally :)

A quick update got some pictures at the club last night on the still in progress Smithfields layout thanks to Kevin who took these.
Have applied the amazing water slide decals this weekend courtesy of the talented Mr Ian MacCormac thank you for sending those over sir they are excellent as always and really finish off these coaches thank you!
Along with finishing off the 2nd Third class coach and brake, I would like to add a PRV, and possibly a 33 and half foot Tri Composite as this will add some nice variation to the rake I hope.

@njee20 @monkeysarefun there appears to be a whole slew of new printers on the horizon and kickstarter, the new Apex maker X1 has a large 16 inch build plate, but only a 8k LCD. and now a coolsiga is a 13 inch build plate and 7k LCD both promise much faster printer speeds, all with ACF, which I have yet to try, so interesting your experience @monkeysarefun on the M5 as I almost stuck my had in my pockets and bought this as I have been really pleased with all my anycubic machines in the past, I use the Anycubic Max regularly, more so than the Mega 8K as its easier to clean up! The Mega 8K is a pain in the Derriere to clean due to the perforated build plate!
I'm hoping they release a new 12k large format printer soon, and then I will probably finally stump up some coffers for this :)
Out of interest the elegoo 12k saturn much better than the anycubic M5 12k then?
Cheers

Certainly well. I'm attempting to print a diesel railcar in 7mm on an Ender 3 to see if I can. On the diagonal it comes right up to the edges!
I will be looking forward to seeing that when it comes out sir :)

Update on the progress of the LBSC Billinton coaches for the ESMRC club's exhibition layout!
Roofs still loose as I need to check the weight of these coaches going across the points on the layout, so I may need to add some additional weight
Some subtle weathering down of the brass, and mansell wheels, and potentially the roofs
And finally the decals/transfers to add along with a couple more coaches to complete the six coach rake.

And some pictures of the latest almost finished Billinton coaches in LBSC Umber
Some slight weathering down is still needed on these, especially the brass in places, roofs are still loose as I need to check the weighting is ok on the track at the club when going across points!
And of course they still need transfers/decals to finish them off!
30ft three compartment brake 3rd, 30ft Five compartment third, 32ft First, and 32ft Lav comp so far!
Still to come another 30ft third, and I was hoping to knock out a double ducket full brake, however im struggling to get this to work, so I may just paint up another 3 compartment third to finish the rake off ready for the exhibition rake to have that ready as I need to move onto the N7, and finish off the 34ft GER coaches. So if I have time I will try to get a double ducket brake finished next year!

Found some stuff:
SECR brake van
All require 'some work' to get a finished model.
None of this has anything to do with the original question, which was about supports needed in the printing process. Since this will vary with the printing process it's rather hard to generalise. Each printer or process will need it's own method, and a degree of experience from the end user.
Thanks for posting Nile, it is great to finally see some of these prints of Simon's that have been discussed so many times on various threads through out this forum, so much appreciated :)
Honest opinion they aren't bad, just a bit basic, lack some detailing and a wee bit chunky in parts, but I suspect this may have a lot to do with the printing medium here, as its not resin, so getting those finer details to print would be very hard work if not impossible at times! So your extra detailing work Nile, especially on the SECR Brakevan is very good, and adds a huge amount to the finish of these models so lovely work sir, and thanks for sharing with us all!
Perhaps a bit of a diversion on this thread but I personally think though as a designer if you are hoping to sell your designs especially STL's then you should most definitely have a solid understanding of the print process going forward!
As it will make an ok model into a fantastic model that folks will enjoy printing again and again! A lot of the work we all do on here as designers building our stock, whether to sell or for personal projects, is spending time getting those prints to work just right! I certainly know I do, and can often spend days trying to figure out how one print, printed fine one day, and completely different the next! It can be anything from temperature, to FEP's or lubrication of the Z axis, even the quality of resin that will produce quite frustratingly different results at times this 3d printing malarkey is a bit of a dark art, but it is getting so much easier with subsequent new technologies and printers coming onto the market!
But slowly the more printing I do, the more I hopefully begin to understand about the best way to orientate, support, and split models up for better print quality!
Realistically drawing the model up in the software can often be the quick bit for me now, its the hours of work afterwards to get a close to perfect print I find can be the real hard work!
I thoroughly recommend @rue_d_etropal if you are considering yourself as a serious designer who would like to sell STL's of 3d printed models invest in a couple of printers! They aren't that expensive now, and the fun and knowledge and experience you will gain will help make your models go from average to amazing, and will be a very immersive and addictive and more importantly a most rewarding journey :)

Re-reading posts from the summer of 2020, I see I was being a bit cagey about the map showing Midland goods and mineral routes to points south of the river. At that time the map in question was on the Members' Area of the Midland Railway Study Centre website but it is now freely available for inspection; I've been posting snippets of it elsewhere. The map in question is the panel at the right-hand end:

This is fantastic, thanks for posting I haven't ever come across this map before it is hugely helpful :)

Some pictures of the LBSC brake progress! Still have the glazing to put in the back, plus add the seating to the interior, hence the roof is still loose.

Apologies for the duplicate picture but just a quick update on the rake of 7mm Billinton’s
30ft brake third almost finished, needs interior, and roof fixing, and end glazing!
30ft third still needs seats inside, just trying out a few colours for the seats.
32ft first, not quite happy with the print but may line it and see how it looks!
32ft lav comp, same as above
30ft double ducket brake reprinted and ready to start lining.
yet to decide the final coach, whether to print another third, or new vehicle plain composite 2nd and first
Picture taken at the club on the layout Smithfield’s, backdrop the newly installed resin cast walling!

Hello folks, I thought I would start a thread of the build and Work in Progress of these LBSC 6 wheel Billinton coaches in 7mm. All 3d printed besides the wheels and 3 link couplings!
You can find the link to the progress on the layout here if anyone is possibly interested, we are aiming for a rough time frame of the 1920's with a bit of artistic license ;)
Link to Smithfield layout below should anyone fancy a gander!
So for this layout i'm intending on building a set of 6 LBSC Billinton 6 wheeler Coaches for Smithfield, 30ft Brake 3rd, 30ft Third x2 32ft Lav comp, 32ft First, and 30ft Double Ended Full brake.Hopefully I intend to show the progress as I go along, so far its been quite hard going getting solid 3d prints off the printer without the dreaded suction banding issues, so going to take the plunge and split these models up into further smaller components to print to get a better finish as currently I print the body complete! Nothing worse than spending all that time and effort lining these babies to find it ruined by huge diagonal lift lines right across your coach sides!!!
I've gone for the all Umber lined livery, mostly because of the era we are planning for the layout, end of the pre-grouping era, plus I think the Umber coaches look quite special with the Gold/Ochre type lining! No doubt this is probably hugely debateable livery, but have based my first coach off the of the Nigel Digby variation in his southern pre-grouping liveries book! Though I have taken some artistic licence and painted the roof grey as it would have weathered down a lot in its service, especially towards the end of these coaches careers! I will potentially weather the roof properly later on once I have done some satisfactory tests to see if I can something more convincing that a quick wash over the top
The roof is yet to be fixed, hence its loose currently as I need to finish work on the interiors, adding in the 3rd class seating, i'm assuming this was a dark reddish colour, I know the first class was blue?
I also have to add the glazing to the windows!
The lining was done using a chris arundell lining pen, along with a set of carefully trialled lining templates I have prepared for the model and printed out to help with lining the model, its ok, but I hope with more practise and confidence I can really sharpen and tidy this up!
I also need to get some correct decals for this coach if I can find any kind soul who knows where I might get some?
Anyway I shall stop jibber jabbering and post some pictures of the current progress LBSC 30ft third coach

Finally an update on the 7mm LBSC Billinton's i'm building for the clubs smithfield exhibition layout
I'm going to start a thread in Pre-grouping as I build these to discuss them in more detail!
They have been a major pain in the backside with the dreaded banding due to suction on the FEP, so going to have to split them up into smaller components for printing... skoolboy Error really my own fault I should have done that in the first place
Still have the glazing to put in, and add the third class seating, and then fix the roof on! Oh and try to see if i can find some suitable transfers for these in 7mm

Do you work off photographs or do you obtain the engineering drawings?
I do a bit of both, work from drawings I can get online or from books, but just as importantly i use photographs as well, to cross check the details
