C&B never really had much in although I may have found it late in the day just before it became a totally R/C outlet. Trainlines used to be at 79 Ashbourne Road (between Friargate and Markeaton) which is now Georgies Vintage Cafe. He only opened two days a week and couldn't have done much business. After relocating to the old Nottingham Road, he opened a lot more frequently but the business was sold not long after to TTC Diecast who are still there.

I think the gripe lies with Dapol. If they don't want the work they shouldn't take it on. At least tell someone it won't be produced anytime soon rather than keeping quiet whilst rolling out O gauge to a smaller select market. A friend had been looking forward to this D6xx model but unfortunately died earlier this year.

Yes you're right ... a senior moment, sorry. I also recall a model shop on Narborough Road on the top floor a general store. Yes, unless the current owner can find a buyer. He is in his 80's and wants to retire. Can't blame him really, I retired at 54. There is a separate thread about this.

I can't see any problem here. Shop is closed on a Sunday so even if you order on a Sunday, the order can't be processed until the Monday and so will OBVIOUSLY get delivered on the Tuesday. Common sense surely? Further, even if you paid for next day delivery on (say) a Monday and it didn't arrive until (say) Thursday, then your gripe is with the courier, NOT the retailer.

Who can forget Taylor & McKenna chain of model shops? Many were taken over by Beatties. In Leicester I have fond memories of NorCol Models under the GC spans at the end of Narborough Road / Braunstone Gate. In Leicester town centre there was ABC Models that disappeared beneath the new bus station. There was also a model shop on Melton Road which I forget the name of. Also in Leicester, Dominoes folded quite recently. In Atherstone we had Pickering's and Cook & Ryder's. Hinckley had Punctillio's which is a recent casualty and long gone is Whiteman's. In Long Eaton we had RBS which closed recently when the owner died. AFAIK, Bob Denny still operates from home. In Nottingham, we have another model shop that may soon close .... Gee Dee's.

Tragic story with Steve's Inter City Models. Prior to opening the shop he had been a survivor of the Herald of Free Enterprise incident. He lost his wife and the compensation helped to start up the model shop. He eventually remarried and his new wife was apparently annoyed at the customers taking up too much of his time. She eventually left and the shop had to close although he still lived above in the flat. He started driving for a short time with Trent-Barton but had to finish due to ill health. He went downhill rapidly with MS and died from complications. Many say this was all brought on from the traumas he suffered. A nice bloke, always had time for his customers.

I don't know how any small business survives these days as there is always some greedy landlord or council leeching off the cream and half the milk as well. It always was a task for me to get to Gee Dee's from the Midland station but it is a lot easier for me now that the tram sets me down at the top of the hill. Sad to see it go, I can't see anyone taking it on ... how long would such a large outlay take to start earning its keep ?

Best mpg I ever got was 50 mpg with a 5.7 litre Camaro. Outward journey was the usual 25 mpg (yes really) and returned home on the back of an AA truck. I make that 50 mpg

My Monaro will tell me I'm doing 999 mpg when coasting downhill but then drops to 5 mpg when sitting at traffic lights. On that basis, if I sit at the lights long enough I should eventually get to where I'm going.

I had a 1.8 wasted spark petrol Laguna Sport that I bought new in 1996. I don't bother with mpg and have never been a diesel driver counting pennies. When the tank is empty, I fill it up. However, on each fill up doing local runs to work and the occasional 70 mile round trip to parents, I would get between 300 and 330 miles to the tankful (about 24mpg). It never varied. On a trip to East Germany though, I was on a long autobahn and I wasn't hanging about (why would you?). Not paying attention to the mileage but covering more miles than I'd ever covered in a short time, I noticed that since the last fill up in Holland, I had covered 400 miles and the gauge showed just less than half. I thought the gauge had stuck but having covered over 400 miles, It would have coughed its last drop miles back. I continued driving as before, attaining a speed and feathering off (a sort of do-it-yourself cruise control) and I got to 600 miles with the gauge showing below empty with the yellow light on. Based on the 14+ gallon tank, I got about 43mpg on that trip hardly dipping below 100mph most of the way. That knocks the optimum 56mph theory into touch.
