NEW LIMITED EDITION ROLLING STOCK JOINS THE BACHMANN COLLECTORS CLUB RANGE FOR SUMMER 2024

As part of Bachmann Europe’s latest British Railway Announcements, the Bachmann Collectors Club today published details of its new Limited Edition models for Summer 2024.

The first models, the OO and N Scale HRA Bogie Hopper Wagon in DB Cargo Green with ‘Freight belongs on rail.’ branding, actually broke cover at the weekend, when a rake of the OO scale wagons appeared on Making Tracks: The Final Frontier. During the event Pete Waterman and the Railnuts received the official Guinness World Record for the Largest Portable Model Railway for their mammoth 208ft-long layout.

HRA wagon No. 41 70 6723 066-0 was outshopped in its unique green livery in 2021 as part of DB Cargo’s ‘Freight belongs on rail.’ campaign and remains in this livery with the campaign slogan emblazoned on either side today. The first HRA entered traffic in 2017, being created by cutting down the HTA coal wagons which had seen their traffic diminish. Repurposing HTA wagons for aggregate was inefficient as they could not be fully loaded before becoming overweight, therefore shortening the wagons allowed the same payload to be moved with a shorter length train than if unmodified HTAs were used. To create the HRAs, one hopper
bay was removed from the HTA before the two ends were welded back together, and these changes are faithfully reproduced on the N and OO scale models.

Just 504 models have been made in each scale and these are in stock now with the N scale version (373-865K) priced at £41.95 and the OO model (37-865K) £62.95. Both prices represent a 10% saving for Club members on the RRP of an equivalent main range item, and further savings can be made when purchasing four wagons, with four N scale wagons (373-865K4) costing £160.00 and four OO versions (37-865K4) priced at £240.00.

The final Club model for Summer 2024 is the N Scale BR Mk1 BCK Brake Composite Corridor which is finished in Pullman Umber and Cream livery as Car No. 356. This coach ran as part of the SLOA charter rake from the early 1980s onwards.

The Steam Locomotive Operators Association (SLOA) was formed in 1975 to bring together steam locomotive owners and groups who wished to run on the main line. The SLOA recognised that the number of vacuum braked and steam heated coaches was in decline in the 1970s so in 1981, in order to preserve steam haulage on the main line, they purchased a rake of eight Metropolitan Cammell Mark 1 Pullman vehicles. Two standard BR Mark 1 Brake Corridor Composite (BCK) vehicles were also sourced to provide the necessary guards’ accommodation. Having previously offered a model of one of the BCKs (Car No. 355), the
Bachmann Collectors Club has produced the missing link with Car No. 356. Again, only 504 models have been made which are in stock now priced to Club members at £42.95 (item No. 374-081K).

GWR ‘Bloater’ fish van which is modelled in OO scale for the first time. Built for fish traffic from 1916, the EFE Rail models cover the S8, S9 and S10 diagrams and include options for the ‘Bloater A’s which were fitted with dual braking systems.

The GWR ‘Bloater’ vans were built for fish traffic from 1916 onwards, to replace an ageing fleet of older designs used to transport fish. Due to the nature of the cargo, the vans were reserved solely for fish traffic and worked mainly from the major fishing ports in Cornwall and Pembrokeshire. Classed as Non-Passenger-Carrying Coaching Stock (NPCCS), the vans were through-piped for steam heating and were rated to run at express speeds with passenger trains. Three variants of the ‘Bloater’ are covered by these all-new EFE Rail models – the Diagram S8, S9 and S10. Within these diagrams could be found vans fitted with vacuum brakes and those fitted with both vacuum and Westinghouse air brakes – the latter were coded ‘Bloater A’, but by the early-1930s these had seen their air brakes removed and were recoded to ‘Bloater’.

Longer than a standard goods van, the ‘Bloaters’ sported three pairs of doors on each side and the first, the Diagram S8s as depicted by this model, had louvres in the body sides and ends. Gas lighting was fitted to aid loading in the dark and the gas light tops can be seen modelled on the roof, with the gas cylinder mounted below the solebar. The detailed underframe features brake gear and pipe runs, whilst footboards are separately fitted to each side of the van and metal spoked wheelsets are employed. At either end can be found sprung buffers, along with tension lock couplings which are mounted to a close-coupling mechanism via NEM pockets.

A new model designed and developed for EFE Rail, the Plasser Crane has been a regular sight on the railway network since the 1970s, making it a fitting subject for EFE Rail’s first piece of ‘On Track Plant’.

The Plasser 12 Ton General Purpose Diesel-Hydraulic Crane is the next model to be designed and developed from the rails up for Bachmann’s EFE Rail range. These self-propelled cranes were given the TOPS code ‘YOB’ following their introduction in the mid-1970s. Used countrywide primarily at track relaying work sites, the cranes would be transported to site within engineering trains, but being self-propelled they were able to move around site and even perform light shunting during engineering possessions. Their compact nature allowed the YOBs to be used whilst an adjacent line remained open to traffic, thanks to them having no tail swing when the crane was in operation.

The new EFE Rail model brings this important piece of On Track Plant (OTP) to OO scale for the first time. With extensive detailing to be found throughout the model, the true character of these versatile vehicles is captured resulting in a stunning model suited to any layout set in the 1970s onwards. With a high level of decoration including the many markings and safety warnings seen on the prototype, each model is also supplied with an accessory pack containing a set of bufferbeam parts – these can be fitted if the standard coupling is removed first. Removal of the couplings is simple thanks to the use of NEM coupling pockets, which are attached via close-coupling mechanisms. Being unmotorised, each bogie is fitted with metal wheelsets mounted on pin-point axles, with the wheel tyres decorated accordingly. The crane itself is modelled in the stowed position.

This example, No. DRP81513, operated in this condition from the late-1970s until 2004, assigned to Southern Track Renewals.

NEW TOOLING LEADS THE WAY IN BACHMANN’S SUMMER 2024 BRITISH RAILWAY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Bachmann Europe Plc today (Wednesday 1st May 2024) presented its Summer 2024 British Railway Announcements, publishing details of new models that have been developed for its Bachmann Branchline, Graham Farish, Bachmann Narrow Gauge and EFE Rail brands.

The anticipation for today’s announcements has been building since March when Bachmann shared news of two new tooling projects that it is working on – the BR 12T ‘Palvan’ in OO scale and the Anchor-Mounted Tank Wagons in N scale, for its Bachmann Branchline and Graham Farish ranges respectively. This news signalled a changed approach to Bachmann’s British Railway Announcement policy, and today details of the initial models to be produced from this new tooling have been confirmed. Where before items included in the British Railway Announcements were scheduled to arrive in the three months after each quarterly instalment, this may now not always be the case for the new projects announced in this manner. Whilst the Anchor-Mounted Tank Wagons will be arriving in shops later this month, the Palvans will not be released until the turn of the year. It will also be late-2024 when the new Bachmann Branchline BR Mk1 BSO, FO and RB coaches arrive in shops and again, details of the first models were released today after this tooling project debuted last weekend.

The previously announced project to develop a new model of the BR Class 25 Diesel Locomotive for the Bachmann Branchline OO scale range has now reached its conclusion, allowing Bachmann to publish details of the first eleven models from this new tooling suite which will arrive in shops this Summer. Covering the Class 25/1, 25/2 and 25/3 locomotives, each model will be available in standard or SOUND FITTED format, or with a motorised roof fan and tinted windscreen glazing in the award-winning SOUND FITTED DELUXE format. For those looking for a smaller locomotive, the LMS Fowler 3F ‘Jinty’ Steam Locomotive and the Class 03 Diesel Shunter will be of interest – both return to the Branchline range in a selection of liveries and each with a choice of standard of SOUND FITTED versions.

Another new tooling project set for delivery this Summer is the Graham Farish N scale Class 450 Electric Multiple Unit, and a new model in the contemporary South Western Railway livery has been added to the previously announced South West Trains version. Further new tooling variations appear on the 102 Ton TEA Bogie Tank Wagons, catering for wagons built with conical ends, and there are more releases of the venerable BR 20 Ton Brake Van to add the finishing touch to goods trains.

Bachmann has shared the identities of the locomotives and wagons which will lead its new Bachmann Narrow Gauge NG7 range, with the complete launch range due to arrive with Bachmann stockists in the next three months. Unveiled in mid-April at the Statfold Model Railway Exhibition, NG7 marks Bachmann’s entry into the British 7mm Narrow Gauge market and the launch range comprises the Quarry Hunslet Steam Locomotives, Dinorwic Wagons, and complementary buildings and accessories from Bachmann’s Scenecraft brand.

The Scenecraft range will once again broaden this Summer and new models in OO scale include a canal lock, two types of smaller station building, and for the modern scene, a GSMr Telecom Cabin and Monopole. The popular Ffestiniog Railway series is also expanding with new models of Minffordd Waiting Room, Tan-y-Bwlch Footbridge, Boston Lodge Engine Shed and Harbour Station Goods Shed all joining the 4mm scale range for use on OO9 and OO scale layouts and dioramas.

The final two new tooling announcements today are for the EFE Rail OO scale range, the first of which is the Plasser 12T General Purpose Crane. They used to have returns for sale, some years ago that was moved to a separate stand at no more than two events a year. That has now ceased, replaced by events at the GCR for the Collectors' Club. Other than that the only thing to 'buy' is to sign up to the Collectors' Club.
