  1. There have been many threads about paint stripping rolling stock, with many alternatives like brake fluid, brown Detol and caustic flakes. However, I've not seen any with photographic evidence, so I was going to test lots of them out, but I've stopped on my second test, as I have found Isopropyl alcohol 91% solution in my ultrasonic cleaner to suit my needs down to the ground. Initially, I tried a water/Caustic flakes/mentholated spirits mix, but it did absolutely nothing, even after 48 hours. So next I went for IPA and am delighted with the results. I have used it on a white metal kit with gloss paint and several plastic kits with acrylic paints. This example is a Heljan class 47 before and after. There is a bit of oxidisation, but it has not affected the plastic's texture, and while all the windows fell out, they remain perfectly clear. Most of the white residue on the roof is paint and not oxidisation or burning. The process took 5-10 minutes, with the temperature at 25 degrees Celsius, but I don't know if that has any effect on the process. I have also done a Hornby A4 (BR green), now smooth black plastic, and again the windows have not fogged in any way.
  2. I am going to try this formula from a 2011 post. I have just ordered an airtight glass dish to put it in since it should be reusable until it is black tar. Has anyone else used this? I can't see any replies lording its success or cursing its failure. So I am going to test it myself.
  3. Oh, I have to say, Replica Railways was an absolute delight! A lovely chap on the phone, and it arrived the next day! You cannot get any better than that.
  4. Following up - Is that a lightning bolt under the "Emergency Lighting Point"? I am also curious as to why the GAS overhaul notice is on the wrong side of the van as the gas tanks are visible in the top picture on the other side from the batteries. Does it relate to the round port next to it? That top photo is the best I can find of that side of the van, and I can see the vacuum cylinder star, but not what's next to it. I assume another BC and P. Saying this, they will all probably be too small to see and I'm making far too much work for myself.
  5. Good morning all, rather than re-invent the wheel, what is your suggestion for the most accurate airbrush acrylic paints or blends for 1980 era Railfreight rolling stock?
  6. Follow-up question... Is there a registry of solebar markings??? I am trying to figure out what they are and what they mean. Most of them end with 1.7.78 and the one above the Brake Compressor is BC. 1.7.78, which makes sense, but the others are a bit hard to make out, one of them appears to be GAS D. 1.7.78 or GAS 0. 1.7.78 and the other one could be SHO. 1.7.78.
  7. Good morning all, I am looking for a 4mm version of this in either etched brass or white metal, but I've not been able to find one after a few hours on ukmodelshops.co.uk Can anyone kindly suggest a source?
  8. I am building the rather obscure BR Griddle car SC1100, but I am lacking internal images. There are two B&W photos in the HMRS book on Mark 1 stock by Keith Parkin, but I can't find anything in colour. The Book claims it had orange curtains wood panelling and black with gold striping moquette, which is unique compared to its later sisters SC1101-SC1105. Can anyone help me out with any internal photos of her in 1980 restored condition?
  9. Good afternoon everyone, This coach is one of my upcoming modelling projects, so I have been looking into it, but information is a bit thin on the ground. Last I know is that she was in scrap condition at Loughborough Central on the GCR, but the last recording is about 2015, but the GCR makes no mention of her being part of their collection on their website, so I am a bit concerned that she is not long for this world, or has been scrapped. Does anyone have any information on her current condition/existence? I am also looking for photographs of her interior. I recall seeing a couple taken during her stay on the GCR, and I think they may have been on RMweb, but have fallen foul of the server switch. I can find a few different photos via https://www.flickriver.com/, an excellent tool for scouring Flickr, but they are not specifically labelled and are more likely of one of her sisters, and not quite the same layout. I'd much appreciate any information you may hold.
  10. Is that Sheet BL161? Does it have all the lining or just letters and numbers?
  11. I've finall y bought a DJH WD 2-10-0 (K39) and I intend to build LMR Gordon, but I'm struggling to track down the finishing encroûtements of nameplates and transfers. Has anyone blazed this trail before me and managed to source these items?
