  1. On the real thing, most couplings are free to move from side to side in a horizontal slot. In 4mm and smaller most people don't include this feature and simply make a vertical slot in the buffer beam into which the shank of the hook can be inserted and be fixed.

The vertical slot can be made by drilling a couple of small holes and then working them with a thin blade in a craft knife to make the right size. Also you can file the shank of the hook down a bit so the vertical slot in the buffer beam isn't so deep. Sometimes this can be a useful trick in plastic buffer beams as the slot needs to be well clear of the bottom of the buffer beam so it doesn't split.

For fixing you can either superglue or epoxy the shank in place, preferably by applying the glue from behind the buffer beam to make a neat job. Alternatively you can use the spring and split pin included in the Smith's pack if you wish, but to be honest I've never really found the theoretical springing from this amounts to much.

    John.

thanks for your help I'll have a go at it.
  2. My Hornby sentinel new couplings. I've been having a look at Smith's chain links but I'm unsure as of how to fit them. The pictures I saw on eBay makes it look like they are flat bottomed but other pictures suggest they have a shaft. Which of these are true. And if the latter is how do I go about fitting it.

  3. You could try to pack out the track so that even though the board is warped, the track remains flat.  The problem is that if it has started to warp it could get worse.

You could try replacing the timber(s) that have caused the warp.

But the most near bullet proof solution is to replace the warped board.

The board itself is near enough perfect. It's the slats underneath of which one has warped
  4. Only a crazy nitwit would say that then forget to include the photo...   :jester:

(That will make absolutely no sense of course, if you change your username, and then I'll be left looking the fool...  :O )

I've only just checked it now. I thought the image had loaded. That's a shame. I'll have to try again
  5. A DMU for £200? I don1t know what standards you are expecting, but if it was to the same standards of the new mk1 coaches, i`d be happy. They are on evilbay for £30 a pop, so that x3 for a 3 car, plus £25 for the motor bogie, and a extra £15 mark up for profit, would give a DMU for £130 top, maybe less for those people selling on smaller margins.

Then you could have more expensive versions with interior lights, head/tail lights, maybe even TTS chis.

It could be sold for min £100 as businesses don't pay normal rates because they buy in bulk so the cost for each part/motor works out cheaper.
  6. There is no definitive "Good" baseboard material, ply, Mdf, Fibreboard, Sundela, concrete, Oak, I have tried most with reasonable results but chipboard, it is heavy, weak, absorbs moisture and disintegrates, can't be sanded to a decent finish, splinters, the sharp edges rip your trousers and skin, and it transmits noise, This evening while recycling materials from a skip I chucked several sheets of 12mm Chipboard back in. However don't let me put you off, It does stay flat unlike most materials, doesn't usually come with live woodworm and as a base plane rather than a track bed on a permanent layout it can do a good job, especially the tongue and groove 18mm flooring grade..

Concrete! How did that work then.
  7. Hi All,

I'm trying to compile a list of currently available RTR that is fitted with coreless motors.

A quick search doesn't reveal definitive answers, but I think I've found the following so far......

    DJ Models:

    Class 71

    14xx/48xx

    J94

    Kernow:

    1361

    O2

    Beattie Well tank

    Bachmann:
