Where should I go about getting replacement nem pockets for the sentinel.
-
thanks for your help I'll have a go at it.On the real thing, most couplings are free to move from side to side in a horizontal slot. In 4mm and smaller most people don't include this feature and simply make a vertical slot in the buffer beam into which the shank of the hook can be inserted and be fixed.
The vertical slot can be made by drilling a couple of small holes and then working them with a thin blade in a craft knife to make the right size. Also you can file the shank of the hook down a bit so the vertical slot in the buffer beam isn't so deep. Sometimes this can be a useful trick in plastic buffer beams as the slot needs to be well clear of the bottom of the buffer beam so it doesn't split.
For fixing you can either superglue or epoxy the shank in place, preferably by applying the glue from behind the buffer beam to make a neat job. Alternatively you can use the spring and split pin included in the Smith's pack if you wish, but to be honest I've never really found the theoretical springing from this amounts to much.

My Hornby sentinel new couplings. I've been having a look at Smith's chain links but I'm unsure as of how to fit them. The pictures I saw on eBay makes it look like they are flat bottomed but other pictures suggest they have a shaft. Which of these are true. And if the latter is how do I go about fitting it.

Looks great. How did you do that? Was it scratch built?

I don't normally like steam locomotives but I do like that one.Sorry, I was only joking, after all the Barclays have proven popular, as well as selling-out, as well as being lovely models (so I gather anyway).
Cheers,
of course, there are always these....

The wheels are not the same as the 0-6-0 sentinel and if anything look a bit bigger.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm just going to have a go at making a new layout with proper wood that can support itself. (Not MDF)

Bachmann are announcing their 2018 range on January the 7th.

The board itself is near enough perfect. It's the slats underneath of which one has warpedYou could try to pack out the track so that even though the board is warped, the track remains flat. The problem is that if it has started to warp it could get worse.
You could try replacing the timber(s) that have caused the warp.
But the most near bullet proof solution is to replace the warped board.

One of the pieces of wood that makes up the underframe has warped making my layout tilt forward. It's only noticeable from the side but is still noticeable. What should I do .

Well......the Heljan? Class 05 seems to be quite popular......soooo Hornby would do well to produce one.Shunting engines? What heresy is this? Next you'll be saying Barclays would sell...
-
No-one seems to have mentioned this. Although I could be wrong. I think the sentinel they did was one of if not the best shunter locomotive they did.

I've only just checked it now. I thought the image had loaded. That's a shame. I'll have to try againOnly a crazy nitwit would say that then forget to include the photo...
(That will make absolutely no sense of course, if you change your username, and then I'll be left looking the fool... )

It could be sold for min £100 as businesses don't pay normal rates because they buy in bulk so the cost for each part/motor works out cheaper.A DMU for £200? I don1t know what standards you are expecting, but if it was to the same standards of the new mk1 coaches, i`d be happy. They are on evilbay for £30 a pop, so that x3 for a 3 car, plus £25 for the motor bogie, and a extra £15 mark up for profit, would give a DMU for £130 top, maybe less for those people selling on smaller margins.
Then you could have more expensive versions with interior lights, head/tail lights, maybe even TTS chis.

I ended up taking the hand rails off. This photo was taken before I removed the excess paint.

Fitting white metal detailing parts to locomotives. Generally these go fine. But when the stem of them snaps they're a nightmare to put on.
-
Try springside models vacuum brakes and steam heating pipes.
-
As long as I don't mess with it it'll be fine.If not happy change to one that was modified to having handrails or nothing there!

I've owned the model for a couple of years and only just noticed that the valances seem quite flimsy. Still considering the option to cut them off.

Concrete! How did that work then. There is no definitive "Good" baseboard material, ply, Mdf, Fibreboard, Sundela, concrete, Oak, I have tried most with reasonable results but chipboard, it is heavy, weak, absorbs moisture and disintegrates, can't be sanded to a decent finish, splinters, the sharp edges rip your trousers and skin, and it transmits noise, This evening while recycling materials from a skip I chucked several sheets of 12mm Chipboard back in. However don't let me put you off, It does stay flat unlike most materials, doesn't usually come with live woodworm and as a base plane rather than a track bed on a permanent layout it can do a good job, especially the tongue and groove 18mm flooring grade..

The golden vallies railways 'janus' locomotive has a coreless motor.Hi All,
I'm trying to compile a list of currently available RTR that is fitted with coreless motors.
A quick search doesn't reveal definitive answers, but I think I've found the following so far......
00 gauge
DJ Models:
Class 71
14xx/48xx
J94
Kernow:
1361
O2
Beattie Well tank
Bachmann:
Wickham trolley
Ivatt 2-6-2T with Next18 socket - maybe?
009 Baldwin
Oxford:
Dean Goods - maybe?
Dapol
GWR streamlined railcar - maybe?
N gauge.
Farish:
Most of the Farish releases over the past 4-5 years or so. The exceptions seem to be - DMUs and EMUs
Dapol:
Unknown.
If anyone can add more or confirm or correct me if I'm wrong, I would be most grateful. I will also continue searching.
Cheers,
Mick

I actually think that looks alright.Modern smoke oils are claimed to be non-toxic, being aqueous mineral oil solutions in the main.
But Hornby used the boiling water solution (via a miniaturised immersion heater) in their one attempt at this. It didn't really catch on, and when you watch the video, it is not hard to see why.....
