I'm over 70 and  i have to walk my dog more then once a day .  Not every person can stay at home all day

I agree, speaking as a fairly sporty 18 year old. Aside from physical activity, I’m so used to travelling regularly that staying in one location for (hopefully no more than) three weeks will be tough. I’ll just have to optimise ‘shopping trips’ and my ‘daily exercise’.

It's unfortunate that the weather has been more pleasant this weekend hence the hordes gravitating towards the more attractive places around; where's a miserable windy and wet weekend when it would be most useful?

And people gathering in isolated areas in mass also damages the opportunity that better weather brings; a slower rate of infection. If the weather was good and people did not gather in large groups then there could be a chance of a decrease in the number of infections.

After another hard fought 5-a-side game (seems every game is as I get older) from the Saltaire brewery- Saltaire Best 4.4% bitter for tonight’s post match beers. Very nice!

I followed your lead tonight and I’m currently enjoying one. It’s very nice and had a rather nutty aroma.

  4. What I have noticed when the tweets come out from the Department of Health & Social Care announcing the number of cases as of 9am that day is that the daily increase number (the number of new cases reported in a day) appears to have levelled. If the number of new cases does not increase, then while they may remain level for a while let’s hope it’s not too long before they decrease. That said, it’s probably too early to make any strong judgement. Various graphs are uploaded by people on Twitter who use the info from DfH&SC.

    Morning all.

We popped to the pharmacy at the biggest Tesco in Cardiff yesterday evening.

Wandering around the store it all seemed quite orderly but there were considerable gaps on the shelves.

One interesting gap was in the alcohol aisle where we saw ( not that we were buying any...hate the stuff) or didn't see, large bottles of vodka. Gone. Devoid. Other spirits were present but vodka, nope.

I can only assume that it was bought in lieu of hand sanitiser........and would probably taste the same.

    Rob.

I visited Morrisons in Boroughbridge on Wednesday. Not that I looked down every aisle, but one massive gap was in the multipacks of lager - plenty of Corona though for some bizarre reason....

I hope the others show the same degree of forward thinking a la Purity. I must admit that tonight’s news is akin to losing the stitching of civilisation that binds us together. Think I’ll have a drink!

Absolutely. This evening Purity announced a new product called ‘Pure Pub Experience’ - essentially, nine bottles of their bottled beers, two packets of Pipers crisps and a half pint stem glass all for £24.

After club finished last night, I secured a bottle of Hooky Gold from Morrisons on the way home. It’s a very nice crisp golden ale. But that’s only half of the story - when I looked at the back label, it said how if I was in Southern Australia or the Northern Territories then I could claim a 10 cents refund if I returned the empty bottle to the supermarket. In short, I might well have consumed a beer in Worcestershire that was brewed in Oxfordshire but bottled in Australia!

  7. Just seen Matt Hancock on BBC Breakfast. I’m not a massive fan of him but today, as well as in recent days, I thought he was very informative on matters about social distancing, home treatment and how to safely support local businesses.

I also observe that having yesterday delayed their announcement of how many new cases there were as of 9am yesterday, the Department for Health & Social Care announced a small drop in the number of new cases (down by around 60). It’s not a massive drop but let’s hope these small drops continue on a regular basis.

I wonder how many microbreweries will survive CV19? Or even my local! I’m going to get beers in to try and keep them running.

Same here. It’s club night tonight for me but on the way home I’ll pop in to Morrisons and buy a bottle of ale or two. Am tempted by Hooky for some reason but Purity are just up the road from me, and they’ve introduced a ‘drive thru’.

I'm not sure about this schools closing business. Everyone is saying that if they close for three months or so, there will not be much point in starting until the next school year in September.

However, why must the school year start then? If everyone in education has had three or four months off by then, why not start again in July or August?

I'm sure it is not beyond the wit of the government to organise a rather flexible school year just for this one session?

Trouble is that the following year would be affected as well. If you started in July or August you would finish by around May, and then the problem repeats itself that July. Having an academic year that went on for almost a whole calendar year would be too difficult for staff and students alike, so to ease the burden you could have two weeks off at each half term and while that would also be a calendar year then at least the ratio of term time to holidays is roughly the same.

This whole period is rather like Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup - because of one occasion, everything else has to be rescheduled.

If / when that comes into force in the coming weeks my concern will be for the very many folks for whom--like my dad--become isolated in their own homes. He's in his 80s, lives alone a long way from me and my siblings, reliant not on social media and gadgets (eg yesterday, over the phone, my attempt to help him set up Skype failed), and reliant much more so on the tele. I wish there was wall-to-wall classic films or old sport on the TV (Freeview) at the moment, to occupy him and help him pass the time, rather than being drawn into the 24-hours news coverage which is just too alarming.

Meanwhile I am encouraging him to get outside, potter round the garden (thankfully he has one), and go for a short walk (but keeping a distance), rather than feeling he has to stay indoors.

You could always order him an ‘Oh, Mr Porter’ DVD from Amazon - currently £3.99. A classic British comedy. I wonder who’ll be the first to reply to this with a quote from the film... :)

Our local Morrison’s has a regular supply so not sure if they have a deal with them to supply exclusively?

I haven’t noticed it in my local Morrisons, but I’ll have a look the next time I’m in as they probably alternate the products on offer. Also looking at ordering some more Schiehallion before everything goes into ‘lockdown‘.

So last night found that several pints of Ringwood brewery’s Forty Niner slipped down quite nicely last night when out for dinner with some friends.

I had a pint of Forty Niner at my birthday meal at our nearest Marstons. A top quality golden ale but unfortunately supermarkets don’t seem to stock bottles of it.

I have a poor immune system in remission from Leukaemia and seriously at risk.

    I am really scared.

I ask those who are unhappy about the measures proposed to think of millions of people like me.  Please consider making severe sacrifices for mine and others benefit.

    Andrew

I’m scared too - not so much about me, as I’m lucky enough not to be in the ‘at risk’ groups, but I am very worried about my elderly relatives if they were to get the virus; one of whom has chest problems as the result of living in a tenement during her childhood with parents and siblings who were always smoking. If she was to get it then there could be very serious consequences.

  14. 23rd February 2017 was the day I joined RMweb. It’s fair to say that having never been part of an online forum before, the site took a bit of getting used to regarding different locations for posts and what should/shouldn’t be posted. But after a while I got the gist of how RMweb worked and haven’t really looked back since. As someone who is used to being told what to do on a daily basis, I soon became acquainted with the format and rules of the site.

Although occasionally I would ‘lurk’ long before I joined I must thank @Phil Bullock for encouraging me to join. It all started when I was doing a shift on the on-train buffet on the SVR. He was having a day out with his wife Teri and when I first noticed him I thought, ‘He’s the man who owns that fantastic model of Abbotswood Junction.’ having served them some refreshments, I asked Phil, ‘You’re not into the world of model railways are you at all?’ After a chat, he mentioned RMweb, and the rest is history. Living ‘reasonably’ close to me, it was a privilege to invite him and his brother-in-law along to a Burns Night we held back in January, as we often communicate away from RMweb. Thanks once again for everything Phil!

Although I don’t regularly attend exhibitions, gradually I have put a few names to faces, such as Ian (@RedgateModels) who most kindly gave my class 20 a once over at Warley last year, @Phil Parker who I also met at Warley, Chris (@Gilbert) who I saw at Cheltenham a few years ago with his layout ‘Dock Street Sidings’ and I seem to recall was very informative about building small layouts and Drew Fermor (@Castle) who leads the annual tours of Didcot Railway Centre.

And there are those who I haven’t met in person but have been very friendly and encouraging, such as those who commented on my cakebox entry back in 2017-18, and many other members who have also been friendly when discussing a myriad of different topics. But a big thank you must go to Andy Y who gives up practically all his time to keeping this site running.

There have been so many significant memories of this site, but if I had to pick one it would probably being the site’s ‘drone correspondent’ when I was the unlucky member who was caught up in the disruption at Gatwick in December 2018, while on my way out to The Gambia. I remember posting photos of the departure screen showing everything as ‘cancelled’, and sending a quick missive to @Ben A, our resident BBC journalist, offering my services for an interview.

    Here’s to another 15 years!

In the short term the winners seem to be the supermarkets whose tills are ringing furiously.  Today's visit to Waitrose found nothing lacking from my list but shelves stripped bare in many areas including canned vegetables, pasta, rice, medications, sanitary products, tissues (but not toilet rolls), store-baked bread and cat food (why cat food???).  I suspect the flip side will be a sharp downturn in business when everyone realises their garages and spare rooms are full of items they won't need in this lifetime.  And maybe then those will be donated to homeless shelters, who knows?

The losers seem to be the population at large who are still seeing hysterical newspaper headlines suggesting we will all be confined to home, that all public gatherings are to be outlawed and - by misinterpretation - that there is an urgent need to hoard.  I am still waiting to see the Press report Mr. Mophead as saying that if we keep calm and carry on all will be well in almost all cases and there really is no need for hype, panic or hoarding.  I am wondering who, if anyone, is in control here and what - apart from sales - might be the media's agenda.

But that’s down south - in the North people just stick a jumper on and make a cup of tea. :D
