Just out of interest, what was the main reason for doing pan swaps on these locos?

I always used to find the old locos (older Hornby, Heljan etc.) had massively over-sprung pans that would distort or even damage catenary if used in a contact setup.

I have new Bachmann class 85, 90 and Heljan AL6 (planning on a new Horby 87 at some point) and had assumed the new pantographs on these models would be better suited to running in contact with OLE, but I have not actually had the opportunity to test this..  Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I had one of my Bachmann 90s running at Chester on Saturday and they were just fine :-)

And I think that makes 3/4 releases all relevant to one particular time, then a skip of about 15 years then the FL one being relevant until present day (barring some subtle differences in markings)

I think instead of doing RfD, they should have done EWS, so they would have covered much more of the era - the EWS ones would have been more popular than RfD and would probably have sold out. I remember coming across someone once selling a set of Hornby EWS 90s that he had repainted, as in about six or seven, various numbers all in EWS. The RfD ones are mostly getting repainted i think LOL...

    How come?

    They look great to me!

I think they may have had a few derailment issues, therefore all Bachmann intermodals were so, mine went round and were fine in the end ... as did the Bachmann 90s, Jack, Multimodal and Malcolm - im just glad they were given the chance to - i had put this rake together for this show and exhibitions were modern OLE is modelled and well, they did look great with the DB90s, well, i think they did, even if they didnt lol ...

  4. Malcolm (90024) and Multimodal (90019) at Making Tracks on Blue Cement and eventually Malcolm Rail as wel - 7th August 2021.

Third time lucky at Chester's Making tracks exhibition which is open till 3rd September and well worth seeing if you aren't too far away from Chester. First time round I'd been stuck in traffic and just missed them, second time round, was biesieged with CV problems and ''so called poor'' intermodal wagons, third time lucky, and despite a wave of criticism from some quarters, Malcolm and Multimodal got to do a lap with the intermodals - and they looked great - we didnt manage to get as far as double heading but it was great getting to see the 90s in their natural habitat - the only shame being that there were none already present with a number of BR blue Class 86s and 87s on duty ...

well done boys... this is what I had waited several months to get to see. We didnt get our luck with the weather this time but having seen the below, my enthusiasm wasnt going to be washed away.

And even now 50 years later there’s no class 310 model lol

or a complete OLE system to support all these releases to the electric modelling community ... Hornby started one and then stopped when detail began to matter ... PECO and Dapol have picked up the baton but have gone head to head instead of complementary components :-(

  7. Something I have waited a little more than two years to see in flesh - a pair of DB 90s paired together - and tonight, I saw such a thing come to fruitition:

Multimodal (90019) and Malcolm (90024) in readiness for Malcolm Rail workings.

  8. Driver Jack Mills at Chester's Making Tracks

This weekend saw me taking a trip to Chester Cathedral's Making Tracks event - where i took Jack and Bill along to potentially run as a consist with some intermodal wagons, well, it turned out to be a bit of an anti-climax with me not realising the significance of my CVs being set up for such running characteristics, anyway, I spoke to my main man @amertonman and he's going to configure Bill and AN other ready - and we'll go again, this time, a bit better set up for such. It wasn't a complete failure however with @cambo74 's take on Driver Jack Mills (90036) making it round one lap of the layout, seen here

    and:

All in all, it was an interesting experience, i learnt a little about being a volunteer at an exhibition, one which I found rewarding, I also learnt a lot about the team dynamic - and finally, it was pointed out to me that my locos needed configuring for the actual operations they're to be undertaking.

I haven’t got one of those yet, as they were a little after the original era I was going to model. However I since blurred the lines a bit and I keep eyeing up that Bachmann Belgian livery one and rubbing my thighs in a Vic Reeves stylee! If they’re still available come payday, I may just avail myself of one. I did think about the Hornby ones, but the windscreens don’t look quite right.

The Bachmann 90s are in a different league to the Hornby 90, which to all intense of purpose is a railroad model, not even a match to their own 87 never mind a Bachmann 90. Its good that (a) Bachmann have managed to deliver the first batch and (b) there are a number of skilled re-liveriers like @Squirrel Rail out there to keep the non Freightliner, IC Swallow or RfD 90 fans satisfied otherwise i would be climbing the walls by now.

  10. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday action on 4S47 and also a nice little 0K06 as well ...

    Wednesday 30th June - 4S47 - Malcolm and Bumblebee1

    Thursday 1st July - 4S47 - Malcolm and Bumblebee1

Getting a nice range of tones with Stafford station full of trainspotters having just had a steam train through...

Friday 2nd June - 4S47 - Malcolm and Bumblebee1 - coming straight through the Queensville Curve heading to Mossend Euroterminal

Friday evening - later on - 0K06 - Backbone (90039) leading Skip001 (67001) and Dyson 42 (92042) up to Crewe - this service has regularly stopped at Stafford station so i got myself all geared up to see them close up - only for them to pass straight through :-( lol ... thats the way it goes sometimes

I suspect the reason we havn’t seen more liveries announced yet is because of the problems with the first lot we had - broken bogies, servo problems and problems with Class 90 decoders as well. In particular, I had bad luck with their decoders but never had anything else.

I'm sure new liveries will come. We all just have to be patient and see. Virgin and Freightliner Orange I’m almost certain will be in the next batch of liveries. I’d say EWS would be a good guess too. But again, we just need to wait and see.

I will be pretty grumpy if they do another Freightliner one before a DB/EWS era liveried one comes out, that's just not fair ... lol ... technically, there are already two Freightliner ones, with the RfD one easily becoming a Freightliner livery of just about three weeks ago :-)

I wish Bachmann would produce more liveries as it would suit me as I would much rather be doing renumbering or weathering work than total resprays. There will always be the odd livery that won’t be covered (whatever class we are talking about) and there will always be a demand for these. As a business I provide what customers want -it’s not me cashing in as the margins on a respray aren’t anyway near that of weathering- it’s why a lot of people don’t do them!

Agreed @Squirrel Rail - as good as your work is ... I'd rather send you a Schenker 90 to re-brand into CB Hall (90035) or Lasta Oftaclass (90040) ... or an EWS one, to re-number and make tired/ weathered - or even a Grand Central one, to make into an ex-GC.

Its the Intercity one that seems to be long-since sold out where prices are less than RRP. RFD and Powerhaul seem to be much more widely available

just look at what's on Ebay @XChris there are no shortages of RfD and Powerhaul ones, but ICSwallow ones are comparatively scarce.

I’ve recorded a new video ... a cab ride tour of the layout. It includes a few views of the new parcels rake and a trip through Yards 3 and 2.

This layout is incredible ... in OLE terms, IMHO probably in the top two best UK WCML style layouts out there, in terms of the whole package and detail.

To provide a further update on this...

90010 has been released from Wolverton today and should be arriving at Basford Hall around now...

Looks like 90003 has gone in to Wolverton in it’s place.

    Thanks,

    Chris

90010 went in to Wolverton the day 90048 was released.

Just as an FYI - None have been painted at Basford Hall but over at Arriva Train Care (ex LNWR)

90015 had it’s logos etc applied at Basford Hall though after being released unbranded (had a heavy exam before coming back in to service)

    Paint jobs as below

    Arriva Traincare Crewe - 90044, 90015

    Toton - 90014, 90047

Wolverton - 90048 with 90010 in progress here.

    Hope this helps! :)

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Thank you Chris :-)

Do you know the dates these took place ?

Its just when I video 90s for my YouTube channel i normally write a short description about their recent history and little tit bits like this help to bring it all together - not to worry if you don't know.
