Some time ago I was watching my granddaughter driving James, very fast, round my layout. I realised that James is a very unusual locomotive, apart from his ability to speak that is. He is an inside cylinder 2-6-0. I have only found 2 such classes in the UK, One on the Caledonian & one on the Glasgow & South Western plus one in Ireland. I thought that it could be regarded as the goods equivalent of the 4-4-0. I read somewhere that James Holder of the GER considered a small wheeled Claud Hamilton for mixed traffic work, supplementing the E4 2-4-0 but never went ahead. I therefor present the LNER K10 class. An A. J. Hill development of the B12. A better loco for MT work than his heavy freight J20. It is built on a Hornby 0-6-0 chassis with a 3F footplate & original B12 cab, boiler & smokebox with front footplate attached . I have assumed that LNER rebuilt them with a round topped boiler as they did the B12/1 & the J20. 21mm Romford driving wheels are fitted. It is numbered in the unused 640xx series between the 2-8-0 & the 0-6-0. With a very old X04 motor it is a very useful engine.  Roger.

Totally impressive, Good Sir! Why, if only we can make such a fine mixed-traffic locomotive ourselves! Would it look nice in GER Royal Blue or LNER Apple Green or lined black?

  2. Well, it;s time to get the ball rolling again on this series as not one but two locomotives would be on the workbench simultaneously!

My West Midlands Railway 3F 0-6-0 Saddle Tank will be made using the SECR S Class (a rebuild from one member of the SECR C Class during WW1) or the Triang Clockwork Saddle Tank from the early Triang Days. The chassis would have a modern up-to-date one from most likely the GWR 57XX Class or 8750 Class though the body would most likely be adapted to fit it on along with some modifications and not just on the outside...

Moving onto the next model, I settled on another Pre-Grouping Style company:

    image.png.fa8136c610329b838b685b85893f6fd0.png

The Devonshire and Cornwall Railway (much like the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway as well as the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway but more of a Western Region flavour).

I shall be making a roster of locomotives soon as this is another fictional railway company in the making.

Fancied some modelling today after having got a few big tasks out of the way.

Firstly on the 4-4-0 a little strip of brass trim was added to the firebox to disguise the join.

Then I started to refit details so it now looks like this while it awaits its tender.

Thanks to some of @Ben Alder's bashing, I now have some more donor parts. Here is an Oxford boiler and cab upper with a Hornby running board which is the combo I would use were I to make another 4-4-0 as both parts are plastic and (although would need strengthening)  would avoid the horrible task of cutting and grinding and filing the diecast metal.

Meanwhile the 2-6-2T takes shape, the boiler being extended as before.

and this Belpaire firebox is in the process of being grafted on.

Current state of play now the windows are being filed and filled. LOTS of filler and sanding still to do.

Nice Beyer Peacock 4-4-0! I'm making something similar myself, too! I am using an Oxford Rail Adams Radial Tank and a GWR Dean Single tender. Shall I explain it with you via PM?

  4. As of lately, I'm getting back into modern train companies given the Steam Era-style treatment. In doing so, I'm gonna work on my WMR 0-6-0ST! I'll need an old Triang Saddle Tank body (electric, not the clockwork version) and a Bachmann 57XX 0-6-0PT chassis, please. Does anyone have any lying around that they don't need?

I’m a bit worried about the rear driving axle, which goes through the ashpan or the lower part of the firebox.  The coupled wheels need moving rearwards so that this axle is behind the firebox, which aligns the front driven axle with that of the original single driver’s, and reduces the rear overhang.   Might mean the motor intruding into the cab, though.

True, but I can assure you about where the motor goes. It fits like a glove and it perfectly fits in fine. Would it help if I shared with you photographs of the chassis on its own?

  6. So, here's another project I've been working on so far:

She may be rather toy-like, but it's certainly got character. I finally found a Hornby Toy Story 4-4-0 Chassis and decided to use it instead of the H Class chassis. The outside cylinders were removed and proper spoked wheels replaced the solid disc ones at the front. She's not quite finished but she is coming on a treat!

  7. Lately, I have been focusing on the Pre-Grouping Era in recent times. For me, my absolute fave loco type from that period is the 4-4-0 tender locomotive. On the SREmG website, this one interests me the most (https://sremg.org.uk/steam/b1(se).shtml). I like its sleek elegance of a bygone time period and it did get me thinking; what if there was a 4-4-0 version of the LNWR Improved Precedent Class? I could definitely make a model of that one day!

Also, on Sam's Trains, Sam himself made his own 3D-printed steam locomotive to go with his own coaching stock! Go take a look-see!

Here's a shot at the 4-4-2 version! The axle loading on the driving wheels would be truly spectacular! Not a culvert left intact! The taper on the boiler achieves nothing of course so its not a useful concept.

What it would achieve to put a MN boiler on a King chassis? Well, even though its little longer, it is a much bigger boiler overall, with a bigger grate and much more heating surface, both in the firebox and in a longer barrel with consequently longer tubes. As nothing comes for free, what that would do to the axle loading, already I believe somewhat optimistically calculated for the Kings...
It would be interesting to see the drawing. I  cannot see that there would be the slightest chance of fitting a wide firebox boiler to a King chassis, my guess it is that the drawing was for comparison purposes not a design study. As for axle clearance in my sketch, that's not really the issue - the wheels themselves passing through the firebox would be more of a design challenge!

So, you took my suggestion and made a GWR Express Passenger Atlantic? Well done.

  9. Here I am back again a week after my visit to the Bluebell Railway! After seeing the sole-surviving H Class No. 263, I was inspired to design a short wheelbase 4-4-0 tender locomotive as I hoped to make a freelance model.

    image.png.b824fd949e7ed59ea3f14120061d7b21.png

This is the locomotive I just came up with. The tender would be a whole piece with attachments for spoked metal wheels and couplings for the drawbar and the modern Hornby coupling. I hope everyone likes it as much as I did in designing it. In addition, I would make rolling stock using an SR Queen Mary bogie brake van chassis to make a short rake of mini coaches inspired by the old Metropolitan Railway coaching stock (which I also rode aboard - twice!).

  10. Here I am back with an N Gauge conversion which is the SECR E Class 4-4-0 made using a Union Mills LSWR T9.

    IMG_20210721_221019_81.jpg

    IMG_20210721_221026_81.jpg

The chimney has been replaced, the dome has been moved forward and the firebox has been constructed from scratch. She still runs well in both directions and the cab windows will be drilled out as the original ones have been filled in. The cab has been modified to represent the SECR Wainwright style akin to its predecessor, the D Class.

Also coupled behind her are two repainted Graham Farish Four Wheel Coaches made for the layout. They are also hauled by the Graham Farish C Class 0-6-0 which also doubles as a good locomotive but as a mixed-traffic locomotive, too. An SECR Dancehall Brake Van was made from a Graham Farish LMS Brake Van and it wasn't an easy conversion, but then again, never say never and believe me, I never once did.

  11. I have purchased a Union Mills T9 which I intend to use as an SECR E Class 4-4-0 as it is mostly not too far off. The only things worth changing are the cab, the chimney and safety valve in place of the whistle which would then be mounted on the cab roof as well as the Belpaire firebox scratch-made and the cab front windows altered. Is a conversion of this sort possible even in this scale?

I can think of two problems. If the motor is live to the chassis, you would have to work out a way to isolate the motor so that it was fed from the chip and not the track. The other possible problem with really old motors is the current draw. I don't know how many amperes a dcc chip can handle but an old Hornby dublo can draw nearly 2 amps.

I see. I kinda meant Triang Hornby/Hornby Railways models.

  13. It has been months since I last updated this thread. I have yet to continue more on my layout along with building and running it, too.

Also, I purchased off E-Bay a Union Mills T9 4-4-0 which I intend to make into an SECR E Class 4-4-0 that I can use for express passenger duties.

This way, I should have at least a handful of period-correct rolling-stock to run on the layout as well as figures which will be the finishing item.

  14. And here we are, another Retro-style model nearing completion!

I know the nameplates are a mite big but it's the best I can do. Getting specially-commissioned nameplates takes a bit of time and money. I did write to the companies but I didn't hear back. And yes, the tender lining's not the best but with some tidying up, it'll look better. Apart from that, a nice model all the same even though it keeps stopping and starting every now and then. Using a 9-volt battery would be more of an option than running on power.
