I wasn't aware the railways in Spain had such horrendous railhead adhesion problems.

These locos - 75 in all - primarily operated in the north of Spain, including Pajeras ramp. Spain has one of the most mountainous networks in Europe so plenty of sand required. Lucky there is plenty available.

But why, oh why, do the coulings stick out so far?

I've just watched Charlie @ Chadwick Model Railway's review of the Siphon G and my first thought was why! Those bogie coupler mounts match no NEM standard despite the A/S product description of the siphon G having NEM standard coupling sockets. When Charlie pointed out the flexible corridor connectors I thought they would be great for a close coupled model but no such luck.

  3. @Mark Laidlay I corrected the scale by going for continental and US HO models first - and P4 or EM was way above my skill set. I also thought the European and US models were far better than what was available in OO in the eighties and nineties. The British HO ones came later when I felt I was missing out on what was running locally and also in a better financial position - that is, I didn't mind the risk of repainting a rtr model and potentially ruining it. I wanted compatibility across my collection and finally reckoned I had the ability to repaint some models.

My current dilemma is I have a large number of Spanish HO models which also have a gauge issue! I will probably leave them at 16.5mm but they really should be at 19.1mm and the thought of a P4 style regauging is nagging at me. I think Spanish broad gauge HO modellers are even thinner on the ground than British HO standard gauge modellers! As you are in Australia, any advice about broad gauge in HO?

  4. @craneman I remember seeing the PSM A3 in CM when it was announced. I had just left school so was in no position to get one. Your a lucky man. Without a doubt the finest RTR British outline 16.5mm gauge locomotive ever produced. I've ordered the Trix version which I'm sure will also be remarkable.

As soon as I left school I dumped OO and went for HO.I couldn't accept how wrong it is as a scale. I now have a few HO British 66s. I haven't repainted a Trix/Marklin 66 yet but the fact they already have a British HO locomotive in their line-up seems to have been overlooked.

Two Mehano and an ESU await an A3 to play with!

  5. Despite your set back everything looks to be progressing well.

I look forward to hearing how you get on removing the sector branding, especially from the 250. I plan on renumbering a couple of my locos and I'm happy to learn from your experience...😉

With a bit of luck the 596s will be available soon. I have moved recently and am currently clearing and then flooring the attic space. I am hoping to have some Transporte Combinado freights running soon! Well, maybe next year.

  6. I went ahead and ordered a 3pk of 40' hi cubes from Evemodel on Aliexpress. £24.01 delivered to the UK in 12 days. I have recently moved house and almost all my trains are still in boxes so I can't compare directly to my existing models but I am quite happy with the appearance and think they do represent value for money.

These appear to have the same types of mounts as those used by Electrotren. A short peg on the bottom of each corner and corresponding recesses at the top of each corner for stacking. I will be getting some more soon.

Apologies for the standard of pictures.

  7. Hi Hector,

The bench work you have in place looks pretty impressive and I look forward to seeing how the layout develops. It might be worth asking one of the mods to move this to the USA and Canadian section. More people will see it there. British HO is minority interest where a few of us try and replay the hand history has dealt the hobby in the UK. 😉

    (edit:spelling)

  8. Thanks guys.

I quite fancy Bachmann's newly announced Venture coaches, cab car and a Charger, but thinking they don't have kinematic mounts is a real put off.  I use Kadees on a lot of my models but think Rocos on close mounts are the best thing for high speed push pull operations.

@298 Can you run cab car forward without issue using  the magnetic bar couplings?
