  1. It looked to me as if there was enough clearance for them to get the line under the road/rail bridges, especially given that the rail bridge was a swing bridge so they could lay the track under it/time their own train to run when the track was open.

Also slightly surprising to see that they were using separate joining pieces rather than having a moulded connector in each end of the track sections (as per Triang Series 3 and Kato Unitrack).

They did seem to be busy with hacksaws on the track a few times, and the comment in the next week preview about expansion joints would seem to be the explanation to the separate joining piece.

  2. All true, except that it is worse than just individual consumer confidence. Company fleet purchases/leases were one of the biggest falls of all.

In my industry there has been a significant drop in the number of on the road sales reps across almost every company over the last five years or so. This is because of a significant shift in the interaction our customers want with us day to day and a move over to social media/online relationships.

I have also had a significant drop in the number of approaches to meet reps from everything from photocopier to freight suppliers in a similar period.

  3. The sprinkler systems I have seen within warehouses have a glass bulb in the sprinkler head. If it reaches a certain temperature the bulb breaks and lets the pressurised water behind it flow out. They appeared to be fed directly off a rising main.

I don’t know if other systems work differently.

  4. Having seen some involvement as a supplier to one of these channels, for a show we would typically offer 10 related products or kits. Of the 10 typically 1 or 2 will sell out during the live show and the rest during repeats or online catchup times.

Obviously with it being a repeat showing of a live show they don’t edit it down, and if there is a demonstrator showing how to use the product and you edit bits out people get quite upset.

  5. Ferrari is bluffing. They're not leaving F1, they need it too much as a marketing tool for their 'regular' business. Besides, if they don't participate, they won't stand any chance of winning anything, don't they? :P

    And Liberty knows it....

But surely if they form a breakaway using Ferrari engines and chassis on a Haas type agreement to all participants they couldn’t lose???

  6. Regrettably the average citizen of the UK doesn't give a toss.  They tend to only care about their armed forces when the latter are actually having to do something to defend them or ensure that supplies of food and fuel can still reach the country.  The vast majority of politicians are almost as bad (and some are far worse) as their main interest is in getting our tax money spent where they think it will buy our votes.   Thus just about every time the UK has got involved in any sort of conflict it has been ill-prepared and under-equipped for the roles its politicians dump onto the armed forces.

Regrettably - because it might mean the food on my table - I can't see these sort of blinkered attitudes ever changing (apart from probably getting even worse).

I think a lot of this boils down to education and a sceptism toward the politicians who authorise such action , a lot of younger people(myself included) don’t equate recent military actions (Iraq x 2, afghan, Bosnia etc) with a direct threat to themselves and theiir way of life and so don’t feel it is much of a priority. If there was a greater explanation of how these conflicts are actually protecting us it might change the attitudes.

  7. Apart from the fact that installing OHLE under the current bridge is easily done, and it will be done quite soon, its a good plan, as previously stated the problem is the proximity of Stocks Lane LC and the B4017 bridge which means the OHLE has to go from its maximum height over the LC to its lowest height under the bridge and because of the short distance between the two the contact wire would be at too much of an angle causing the pantograph to put too much strain on the wire above about 60mph with the possibility of a dewirement, or in the other direction the pantograph losing contact, which is why there will be a 60mph restriction under the bridge for any trains with pantographs raised.

Closing Stocks Lane LC would probably be the best idea as it wouldnt inconvenience too many people as there are 2 alternative routes available, the bridge or Causeway LC.

One alternative route, there is no road access from that part of the village to the bridge. ( there is a private farm track which shows on google maps).

  8. The main issue in Steventon to the locals is it is still a major through route from many local villages to the A34 and Milton park (and Didcot Parkway) avoiding the bottlenecks at Rowstock for Harwell/Newbury/Wallingford and Reading, and Marcham for Abingdon and Oxford.

This is, rarely for Oxfordshire, locals complaining for a very clear reason.

  9. On the other hand, some drivers can be too small - Tyrell had to bolt wooden blocks to the pedals of Ukyo Katayama's car so he could reach them.

I think height has become more of an issue in F1 in recent years as the total weight of the car + driver has become more critical owing to the weight of the engines.

I do think there should be a driver plus ballast to weight 85 or 90kg at start of race weekend or similar to balance this out.
