  1. I was lucky enough to have most of my undergraduate lectures in rooms overlooking the WCML at one of its more interesting locations during an interesting era, certainly to the detriment of my academic progress as I spent too much time looking out of the window. As such, quite a few of my friends called me, “Simon the trainspotter” to distinguish me from other Simons they knew. I suppose it could have been worse, e.g. Simple Simon. Back to the topic... why would anyone want to lock in the tension? Still, if the coupling fits...
  2. No problem, but no.Apart from a few weeks when I was 13. And then I asked myself what was the point of it?
  3. Firstly, I wasn’t offended.Secondly, if I was, it wasn’t by you: I put a space between paragraphs to separate a humorous remark in response to you from a serious point about rudeness (as opposed to bluntness) and the ongoing irony of people claiming a right to free speech whilst simultaneously denigrating someone else doing the same thing simply because their view is different. Thirdly, I have been away from the forum since I made my initial statement of opinion, and wished to exercise my right to reply. Fourthly, yes. Fifthly, who’s seen my pet camel?
  4. That little brick hut, is it where they go to pay?
  5. Where’s that “tw@“ button when you need it? (But very good, Jordan.)
  6. Beware of generalisations! Patrick is quite right, and this is far and a away the most common situation, but some cars were reserved for particular traffic, for example paper, and this is more likely to be the case for short lines, which may exist solely to carry a single traffic serving a single industry.Indeed, they may be owned by it!
  7. Sounds like an exact match for a Midland 0-6-0: 3F or 4F.
  8. Not sure if bluntness works well with a point.... As I said, most are afraid to criticise the infantilism of TTTE, and you can see why: infantile abuse, which we can do without. Both my kids have been diagnosed formally as having ASD (my wife says they got it from me!) but they wouldn’t stoop so low as some of the things said recently in this thread. I brought them up better than that.
  9. I am not alone in viewing TTTE as somewhat detrimental to our hobby and how it is perceived. I may be alone in having the cajones to say so in public. Always go back to the original source where possible. Doesn’t stop it being patronising.
  10. Well, in Henry the Green Engine, in the story ‘Henry’s Sneeze’, the story now ends with the boys running home “as black as soot”. I have in my possession a 1969 reprint of a 1967 edition, and the last word in that phrase is similar to the name of a State/River in Africa (Niger) but has an extra “g”.By the 60s, I think it was generally accepted that the “n-word” was offensive, but more than that, this was a clergyman writing, not some retired major born and bred into the British Indian Army... Then there are the Scottish Twins, Donald and Douglas, portrayed as fond of a good sing-song but also clearly portrayed as heavy bruisers, seeing as they were built in Glasgow.
  11. You have essentially two choices: buy some stuff to play with without much regard to era or location, or buy some books/magazines to find out a bit more about the prototype before buying only what suits your more informed choice.
  12. Despite the ratings, that wasn’t meant to be funny. Average is another word for mediocre, and who wants to aspire to mediocrity? How much of the sermonising and racism do you have to plough through first?
  13. I have it on my CV. No problems. The only person I have met who goes into childish giggles is one of my neighbours. Show people a photo, or share a link, of your best modelling output and you get genuine interest, I find.
  14. I spent 3 years as secretary to a committee* with my boss as a member and his boss (the CEO) as chairman. As my boss pointed out to me, “he who controls the minutes controls the meeting”, to which I replied, “What do you want me to say, boss?” After all, I knew which one of them did my appraisal...(And the chairman never read the papers before the meeting anyway, rather appallingly.) *It was bizarre. I had no choice in the matter, but it seemed as if every senior manager in the place wanted to attend those meetings, whereas I would have given my right arm to get out of it, and I was a level down from them.
  15. There is something about some of these coal depots in one of the “Great Eastern in Town and Country” volumes, IIRC.
  16. You have achieved 3-point suspension. No need, or point, in springing it. Indeed, that would be counterproductive, as the axle needs to find its own balance.
  17. Technically evasion, rather than defence... ...but a wise general picks the battles he can can win, and simply avoids the ones he can’t.
  18. Same as me here...And yet another, thank you...
  19. If you slot like this: _-_ The you could use the lower edge (or upper, it you flip it over) to define the reference position, and the upper edge to provide the tightness of fit to hold things just-so whilst you solder it.
  20. Some people will do anything to increase their post-count. And that’s another clocked up for me...
  21. Look at the June 76 issue, and there is a letter from Tony East, pointing out that he had just completed a model (in metal) of the same class, but had been beaten to it by the Group Captain. Probably. He also wrote a number of articles about modelling GWR wagons.
