  1. This is belated because I've put some posts in already. I'm 69 and I've lived all my life in East Lothian close to the East Coast Mainline,East of Edinburgh.I can go back to the mid 1950s when it was all steam and in some ways the Golden Twilight of Steam. I saw the transition to diesel and later the electrification of the railway. Over the years I've had Triang, Hornby,Fleischmann,Athearn and Kato! I never worked on the railway but I travelled a fair bit around Europe between 1970 and 1993. Currently I've got a semi dormant Hornby collection and a portable put away Kato set up.
  2. If you want a Southern big tank with a wider field then a Z has a limited potential in that some of not all spent time in WD livery at Cairnryan near Stranraer during WW2.Tongue in cheek it then becomes a Scottish Loco! Black 5 in Wartime black makes a fine match methinks!
  3. Thanks to pH for sharing the article.lsold my copy years ago when I was perpetually short of money! So it's nice to see it again Many thanks
  4. I'll attempt to give a wee bit more info on my previous post for Brushman 47544.It was a Saturday and the Royal Scot,Thames Clyde Express and other trains left Glasgow with their usual locos and worked to Edinburgh thence via Berwick to Newcastle .In all cases Eastern motive power took over- the Royal Scot got a V2 as I recall and the Polmadie locos returned home the same way they came-- on freight trains! The V2 worked to Leeds as I recall It stuck in my mind because to get to Longniddry our bus had to negotiate flood water from an overflowing stream - it had been a very wet morning . The photo of the Queen of Scots is in Power of the A2s by Oxford publishing.
  5. It's me again! At the end of October 1954,a storm blew in which flooded Carlisle. It was a Saturday and my mother was visiting my Grandad but decided to come into Longniddry to pay our newspaper bill before getting the bus onwards. While we were waiting for the bus a southbound express came through rolling very slowly under caution signals. The locomotive was an unidentified Duchess!. Many years later I got hold of Trains Illustrated for December 1954.In it was a photograph of 46221 at Polmont on the diverted up Royal Scot taken by WJV Anderson.Ive never seen that photograph again but he photographed the up Queen of Scots there that same day.All Carlisle traffic was sent south to Newcastle behind Duchesses and a Royal Scot so you can have a Duchess alongside a Queen of Scots!
  6. Sir William Stammer was retained for a fortnight after the rest of the class were withdrawn to work the Scottish BORDERER Railtour between Crewe and Carlisle. It was polished up to the dead nines and looked absolutely magnificent - like a brand new model. On return to Crewe it was promptly withdrawn and send for scrapping which was carried out almost immediately.Ive a couple of dvds of the Waverley route where the train is seen arriving at Carlisle and the TVP programme " Britain's lost mainline" shows it in all its glory that day. A real tragedy
  7. Either they price realistically to begin with or they and their dealers are going to be left with a load of unsold stock on their hands - what then?
  8. I've had this 8f for about 13 years but it's been out of use for some time as the right hand slidebars have become detached from the cylinders.Could I Superboy's them back in place or would I need a full set of valve gear? Any comments please. Thank you
  9. I give this as a tip .Google Hornby catalogue number and Hattons last site will come up complete with illustrations! In this case the coaches are the railroad ones weathered
  10. The Queen of Scots passed where I lived in1953/4 so I saw it regularly. When I could cycle about 1959 onwards,I used to cycle over to see it pass on the down working about 7-30pm so I have more than a passing interest. As a result I now have all 3 train packs (r2365m,r2598m and r3402) as well as the r1024 train set which was what got me back into Hornby - my local area is shown as a map on the r1024 box! I've seen a photo of 60037 Hyperion hauling the up train at Craigentinny. The loco is in early B R blue but the leading brake end Pullman has a trussed underframe. This would be about 1950. Probably in place of a normal vehicle undergoing an overhaul
