From a thirty quid pile of bits a pheonix arises...the real thing looks less streaky, I reckon a little weathering powder work could finish the body work, along with some brass strip lamp irons and etched windscreen wipers...

the chassis is next when I get my hands on the drawings I am waiting for, new chassis cross members for the bogie fronts and new cab steps are on the list. The springs have been moved back and some pipework has been added from fusewire...

Having recently aquired a few weathering powders, I have set off on two projects to use them, firstly, a hymek weathered mostly with powders, and secondly a 47 weathered with a mixed media approach, using washes, dry brushing and powders.

First completed is the hymek (there are a still a few bits left, like the staining on the bufferbeam cowling and add wire water fuel and coolant fillers. When I get round to it the pipework on the bufferbeam will be replaced, since IMHO the square main res pipes dont look good (but the steam heat pipe will possibly be kept). The only detailing work I have done is to fit the air tank to the body behind the bufferbeam and add suitable pipework.

a resin kit from an ex about two years ago, this is a SAR diagram aa28 kitchen car (which should be paired with a suitable diner from memory... I am still trying to work out what goes where on the inside, details being sketchy to say the least, its since been primed, in readiness for a grey/gulf red paint job.

onto the banger blue projects, I picked up a 15 quid lima 31 and a bachy 46 up at cheltenham, the latter being ex pallet lane stock (cheers dan).

on the peak I have tried to tone down the plastic underframe and blend in the old weathering with some mig powders, which are new to me. experimenting suggests I need a lot more colours, but whats there is looking good methinks, opinions welcome. I also added the sockets below the left buffer t each end in line with a prototype snap from the web.

the 31 was considerably worse, weathered in all over grey sludge, I have tried lifting some of the colour with white spirit, and toning in darker mig powders, handrails were all fabricated from 0.5mm brass wire, since none were present, including the front ones. YES they were stressful, but after a day fettling them, the fronts all sit pretty neatly s do the sides. Glazing was remove and the edges painted black to hide the thickness, then replaced and pipes from my scrapbox added at one end. Eventually this will become 31304, because I have a snap of it with RED snowploughs and a steam lance (using modellers license the lances wont be modelled but the ploughs will)

I think tht will do for a while, there is a bachy 47 with an uncertain future and some other locos awaiting parts/time/decisions.
