  1. Given the patchy frequency of new OO introductions (by no means confined to Bachmann), Hatton's decided quite some time ago to substantially increase their involvement in the pre-owned market, precisely to help maintain cash-flow when there is a paucity of new items to sell.

Bachmann may have decided that cutting off supplies to (probably) the biggest retailer in the business is best done when there is little to supply. Doing so may make them less unpopular (overall) than under-delivering on orders placed by everyone else in the trade.

That said, it will clearly provide further stimulus to Hatton's in their development of self-originated products to ensure continuity of supply and which may (directly or indirectly) lead them to reduce their future purchases from Bachmann.

I don't see there being much leverage towards a resolution of the dispute until [a] Hatton's have substantially run down their existing stock of Bachmann product and Bachmann's delivery patterns have recovered somewhat. So, weeks rather than days, and perhaps even a few months.

Looking at the latest availability on the Bachmann website there is very little new due until June / July 2019. There also appears to be quite a lot in stock which needs to be shifted to maintain their cash flow.

  2. I have to say that Volume 1 is the most fantastic reference book. I for one don't mind having to purchase all the LNER information when all I really wanted was the GWR.

However having purchased the book I am now certainly anticipating the LMS and SR volume.

Thank you Hugh for all the work you have put into this and your previous volumes.

  3. Curious about what you mean by "early BR".  I'm no expert, but I should think they were all the same design.  These were introduced in 1950?  The ex LNER 20T brake looks very similar, is that what mean?  Slaters have a quite good kit.

It very much depends on the type of information displayed on the wagon. (Early BR) Wagon number, XP etc. (Later BR) The same with additional information all surrounded by white line boxes. Later with additional black boxes etc.

  4. 31-925,31-926 and 31-927 appeared as such in the 1997 Bachmann catalogue but by the time of release in late 1998 the catalogue numbers had changed to 32-300,32-301 and 32-302 and an additional 32-303 was added.

  5. In later years they were relegated to spoil, unsheeted.

Often with sighting holes cut in the side sheets to prevent overloading.

In the late 1970s they were used to carry ingot molds manufactured or repaired at Dowlais to Port Talbot or Llanwern steel works. I believe that sighting holes were cut in the sides to assist with loading or unloading the molds following an accident.

  6. Bachmann tooled three different cab fronts for the 108 (Large roof head code indicator destination within window, Small roof destination indicator box with 2 character head code box below windows and Small roof destination indicator with no head code . Apart from the differences in the window / door configuration in the trailer due to the lack of a toilet in the 116 would a similar tooling suite enable the power cars at least to be modelled.

  7. Can anyone recommend a non-sound decoder for the class 800, please?

    I have tried:

    • the DCC Concepts ZN8D which is too thick
    • the DCC Concepts ZN8H, but the harness is not long enough and the wires coming from the plug make it too thick
    • the Lenz Silver direct, which is also too thick
Ideally I'd something which has a thin harness long enough but not too long, so that everything fits under the coach.

I've used a Hattons DCR 8 with harness. Runs perfectly.
