Of course there is also the well-known case of the prototype glass-fibre bodied carriage (S1000, which I think still exists on the East Somerset Railway?) which flexed to the point that the doors jammed when loaded, despite being perfectly sound in terms of structural strength.

That rings true to me, though I know little about carriage design. Certainly (in Europe at least) The Eurocodes used for building design specify maximum deflection to minimise this risk. So the building should be deigned not only to carry both dead and live loads (i.e. permanent and temporary loads) as specified, but deflection (i.e. amount of hog, bow, sag, whatever terms you want to use,) must not exceed the limit prescribed.

All wrong, in the sense that what should be the main subject is nowhere near the centre of the composition, but on the other hand it does show much more of the overall context.

It depends what you think is the main subject. If the main subject is the north approach to the station, then the train forms a convenient 'boundary' to the view. rather like it in that way.

I do particularly like these views along Station Road. So reminiscent of many a walk to the station.

Definitely better illumination but the colour of the daylight LEDs makes the last test picture with the signals feel like a cold grey winter's day.

Not everything on E4um could be taken at face value, though usually the invective fell short of firearms.

The ICE once circulated to branch committees a note about the future uses of the London HQ, which included a suggestion that the entrance hall be used for 'duel' purposes. Someone suggested that this was a new form of arbitration!

I'm not a grammar maven by any means but one thing that has begun to wind me up is the increasing use of "aircrafts" to mean the plural of aircraft singular. I've seen a lot of this in connection with reporting in Ukraine.

    Al

My prime wind up is the frequent use of alternate for alternative. Sometimes it makes the grammatical meaning ridiculous.

But Clive, it would not go over that bridge. The Kettering bus would go under the Oundle Road bridge, south of the river.

I think some little Spotters' heads poking over the brick part? maybe one doing a Kes salute?

    P

Little spotters (like me) could not see over the brick part and so were restricted to the wire fence part at the end of the parapets. Would need to be quite a big spotter.

It's something a bit different for a change though!  Could maybe do with something else to provide a bit of interest, like a bus on the bridge (I've got my coat!)?

But that bridge is not on a bus route.

Like so with real wood, but most likely without the policeman!

What would an English policeman be doing 250 miles North of the Border? Scottish police do wear sensible headgear, not those silly helmets! Otherwise looking very good and lifelike.

With twelve cars behind the tender, a push from the pilot is mandatory, so here comes the N5 to assist.

When did the pilot pushing long down trains out of the station stop? I cannot recall ever seeing it, though after this length of time, my memory is a little hazy.

Been browsing some oldish MRJ's. In No 170 from 2006, photographs of Maindee East engine Shed taken by Mr Tony Wright, who created such atmosphere that I had to look more than twice, is it the real thing or a model!? Brilliant!, a layout I never saw wish, I had!

Assuming Maindee East is just east of Newport (Gwent), was there ever an MPD there?

It's probably an age thing 0 as you get that little bit older it's easier to forget who you've met rather than remember them all.  However I can still remember the exact words Prince Phillip said to me on the second occasion I was presented to him in an official 'line up' - 'What, you again!'

My uncle was president of Cardiff University Debating Society many years ago. He had to host Prince Phillip on one occasion - as a Republican, it was against his better feelings. During the Prince's speech, he was surprised at the reaction when he told the students 'What we need is brains'. My uncle had to explain to him that that was the advertising slogan at the time for Brains, the local brewery.

  15. Re your sad parcel from Jesse, at least it was with a neighbour that they left it. I once had couriers abandon a parcel for me 20 miles away - could not be bothered to go the last bit! I have not had any serious damage, the worst being a book that arrived on the outside of its packaging. It reminded me of a stagecoach with the driver on the outside, as the author's name was Driver.

    Good evening Lloyd,

The moment anyone thinks they're in the presence of 'lesser mortals' is the time their neck breaks because of an overly-swollen head!

I do appreciate a first class paint job; a job I don't have the ability to achieve myself. I don't own an airbrush, nor a bow pen. I paint my models with rattle cans and/or sables and line with transfers. Pro' painters don't really do this, though sables are in their armouries.

May I offer some comparisons, please? I present a model I've painted, then an equivalent one painted by pros. Not all viewpoints are exactly the same, but, I hope, enough to make a comparison. I'll make no judgements, though others might.............

The painting of your model is exquisite, and I don't have the slightest problem in farming out such jobs to others. In my own case, I can build to a 'reasonable' standard, but, in the main, I can't paint to that same standard. So, what do I do? Produce an 'inferior' finish, or make sure a model looks as good as possible? Anyway, in my days as a 'professional' model-maker, my clients insisted on a 'professional' paint finish. Simple!

    Tony

It always surprises me that you, a retired art teacher do not normally paint your own models. Could it be that, because of your particular artistic talents, you appreciate a first class paint job more than us lesser mortals, or even engineers like myself?

Our next visitor was the borrowed 04/8, with the Little Barford empties. Unfortunately photoshopping round the signals in the far distance was far beyond my abilities, so I was going to bin this. However, I know some of you are rather partial to the 04, so I'll put it up untouched. If anyone feels they have the time, inclination and ability to shop it properly, they are welcome to do so.

The main content of that photo is so good, I had not noticed that the background had not been photo-shopped until I read it! That means that either the initial photo was excellent, or I am getting dementia.

I know of at least two models of Bawtry under construction, and then there's Jess Sim's Woolmer Green (which I'd like to take pictures next time I'm 'down under').

I've also taken pictures of Otterington, and Morpeth layouts, plus Princes Street Gardens, not to mention subjects on the Waverley route or on the Aberdeen road.

    Are there more?

Can anyone else take us through such a 'model journey' along the WCML (I've photographed models of Rugby, Preston, Clifton and Lowther, Oxenholme, Shap and Carlisle, but that's all), the Western main lines to the West Midlands, to the SW, or the SR main line to the SW? I'm struggling to find model images of those other than Acton Main Line or Basingstoke (it doesn't mean I'm partisan, either, though I might have forgotten).

May we see images of the other trunk routes in model form from other photographers, please?

I have a model of Severn Tunnel junction. unfortunately it only exists in my mind at present - hence no photos!
