Brian.
Do you recall seeing three Standard 3MT tender locos, (77xxx), in the sidings which were on the diagonal opposite across Duddeston Mill Road from Saltley shed? I think it was after the end of steam. They weren't there very long.
Andy.

This formed a great little area to stand and spot the trains, putting coins on the track another pastime.
Old penny's seemed to be best especially if an 8F or a 9F went over them!

I used to go back to Water Orton whenever I got the chance when going up to Birmingham to visit my Mum and my better half's mother. My Mum passed in 2019 and we moved the mother in law down to Essex at the start of Covid. So have not been back up since. I wonder how long the station will survive in it's last state I saw it in. It needs a preservation order on it, if it hasn't already got one.
Sorry about the finger in the last shot.
I took a photo of the entrance hall. It's a result that we have not got smelly vision as there was a very strong smell of pish!

I classed the Peaks, (D183), at Water Orton. I was sitting on the wall of the Dog Inn car park. I was so exited that I fell off the wall track side. I was not hurt, apart from pride. The signalman in East box was not impressed when he clocked me going through the gate under the footbridge to get out. One of the signalmen was OK with us standing track side of the signal box as long as we did not cross over the wire trunking.

Just found this topic. I have fond memories of Water Orton, spotting on the footbridge by East junction, whilst my grandad and uncle sat outside the Dog Inn supping a few pints. My aunt and uncle lived in Manor House Lane. That was in 1965 when I was 10. There were still a few steam about, mainly 8F, 9F, Black Fives and occasional other types.
61024 Addax was seen going East on a passenger service. The other memory I have of the East junction is a row of five steam locos being pulled by one live one going in the direction of Derby, probably for scrapping.
After that I spent many a Saturday on the footbridge or the wall in the Dog Inn car park.
The other memory I have is going to the shop/off licence at the top of Manor House Lane that was run by Mr Rhodes, a relative of Cecil. Mr Rhodes had a very large shotgun mounted on one of the wooden beams in the shop.

It arrived today having come via a local depot, Chlemsford.
That's a novel idea, isn't it!
And guess what. I went to the shops after it had been delivered to find somebody in my road had thrown out two water butts!

I couldn't believe it, and I wouldn't have touched it with a barge pole!
I love that saying. How many people actually possess a Barge Pole?
I suppose people that own barges will have one.
It can be used to hold onto a wharf if it has a hook, as well as pushing off.
Hat coat, door!

As ever thanks David to for posting some fascinating pictures. Is that a former GWR Toad between the BR standard brake wagon the flat wagon in C3712 at Laindon?
There were quite a few ex-GW brake vans converted to Mess Vans and Permanent Way use.

Coleshill (Forge Mills ) layout and stock

I have done some research and according to:- https://www.whathappenedtosteam.com/volumes/the-british-railways-standards/br-volume-twenty-one/
The 77xxx class were all scrapped nearish to their allocations, (Mainly North East and Scotland). Only 77014 was in the south at Weymouth and then went to Risca, Wales for scrapping, so a complete mystery.
I do not have my spotting notes before 1980, must have been lost when my parents moved house.
