As a newbie to all this i would reccomend the CL point in a bag kit. Very good instructions are included about 10 pages. I have started a EM gauge layout and since beginning that i am considering re-building some of my 00 gauge layout to hand built points, etc. Plus Hayfields thread above is supurb.

Yes it should do, it's the most recent type Hornby loco drive 2P with traction tyres.
The gears slip when under load on this one. I bought it used from Hattons and it has always done it, must investigate and find the problem.

Mike's Models do/did some S&DJR platform and floor mounted weather columns in white metal. Holt Models in Swansea sell/did sell them.
I managed to get 2 off a well known auction site. They look so old and nice im not sure i want to open them. I saw Mike Sharman passed away last year, so sad.

Just spent this evening reading this thread, all the ups and downs.
Really interesting, looking forward to seeing more.

The wheels have been reset and fitted.
I am not sure it would pull a 10 coach passenger but it wouldnt before anyway. It does work though, needs a bit of fine tuning.
I am waiting for a Peco Smart switch point control to arrive so have not tested anything across points yet.
That was fun and free..
Thank you.

Hi Izzy,
Thanks for that, it does seem to work. Splined axles, pulled them off and re set with a BTB gauge. Will try a reasemble tomorrow and see how it goes,

Thank you for the replies, very kind to share your knowledge.
I have taken the chassis out. Being new to this i am not sure what type it is but does not look to different from the Bachmann one i did before.
Thinking i may be able to get some wheels and axles that i could fettle in to the chassis.
The driving axle has a locating bush on one side of the gear and the other wheels just have spacers. I do have some EM axles maybe i should remove the wheels and have a look.
Any advice would be welcome.

Hi all,
I have a new found interest in RTR EM conversion and i have a pretty large collection of RTR locos, 1F, 3F, 4F, 2P etc. Lying in a siding hardly ever used is a loco drive Hornby Midland 2P,
has anyone done this loco drive to EM?
Cant find it on the usual how to guides so im guessing not an easy one. I see Alan Gibson sell all the wheels.
I can see it has a lot of pick ups on the wheels that may cause a problem.
Is it a easier to make a new chassis?
Thanks in advance,
Paul.

Amazing footage. Always good to see unseen material. Shame nothing on Wincanton but that’s being picky. So glad people took the time to document what was then an everyday occurrence. Cine film wasn’t cheap either . Have a few photos of Wincanton area my father took, some of which appeared in Alan Hammond’s books, which I will scan and post on this site when I have time.
There is a film on youtube called The s&d and how we filmed it that has a small section on Wincanton. Not much though.

A while ago I started another conversion of a Bachmann standard class 5.
Alls not gone to plan with this one, the black 5 I converted works a treat but this one I could not get the wheels to stay straight.
I added a gentle radius to the ends of the axles so they would fit in the wheelboss better but they've ended up wobbly.
The standard 5 I finished this evening & it's a very nice runner but it's the first model train in history to have parkinsons.
Hi Simon,
Hope you dont mind me asking, how do you make the return cranks on the valve gear? This is something i have really been struggling to do.
Great looking conversions.

IIRC the blue ones had screw reversers and were transferred to London for use on passenger trains out of Broad Street.
Initially one was sent up to town for trial purposes.
There is a thread about all this somewhere on RMWeb, which I think I might have started.
Found it:
That is quite amazing. I grew up in Blandford but moved to London in my 20s. I lived in Dalston on the old (now re opened) NLR line. To think i was modeling the old S&D in a location the old Jintys had run is news to me. Thank you so much Nearholmer.

My knowledge of jintys is not that good, but i always thought the prussian blue ones must have been used into BR days. I had presumed 47314 was old number 23. Did it get moved to another shed somewhere else in the country?

The curved road really draws the eye into the backscene, very nice. Do you plan on having a lorry or such waiting at the road?

Wincanton race course?
(I should mention that I know nothing at all about horse racing so that might well be completely implausible)
I thought they might have used them for prize Bulls to keep them separated, huge cattle market at Sturminster Newton in those days.

If you want proper cuts on ply buy a Festool ts55. (only joking really unless you are a chippy by trade).

If you note " down the sjdr" platforms have a flat face, the requirement for the step in came later. So you need to check you get it right for wherever you are modelling.
The main station I'm modelling was opened in 1882, with flat faced platforms, when the station was extended in 1901, the platform extensions had the step in.
I should have said, the station i am modelling opened in 1864, the 2nd platform not in the picture was added later and indeed has the step.
Thank you, TheQ.

Thanks for the kind comments about the picture. I used to have some of my S&D pictures on Flickr until finding that they were being posted without credit on social media. When they turn up I claim them, as with this one, and supply whatever information I have relating to them. This one has appeared in print - in Blandford Museum's booklet "Blandford Railway in close-up".
The S&D closed before i was born. My family moved to Blandford in 1980, they had just started building bungalows on the station site. I was train mad and spent my youth walking up and down the old line around Blandford, Shillingstone, etc.
The S&D has been a life long interest for me and to see photos i have never seen before is such a delight.
On my searches on the web i have seen a few other pictures taken around the iron bridge with a similar style to this one , i presume you might have taken these as well.
Thank you again.

The trick is to go in and out as quickly as possible, so as not to melt the plastic, I normally don't fit the 2 slide chairs either side of the solder joint as the switch rail will melt a ridge in the plastic slide chair base. At worst you will have to cut off the odd damaged chair and fit a new one.
Its a knack which is quickly learnt
I guess damage is inevitable but can repair and replace. Good advice, thank you.

I would advise that you practice soldering on some off cuts of brass and get the hang of soldering before you do your switches. Rule one for soldering is to clean the areas that are to be soldered before you start. I use a glass fibre pencil, some people prefer to use other tools as the fibres irritate their skin, I'm lucky and rarely have a problem with it.
Funny thing is, im a plumber by trade so have done a fair bit of soldering in my time, but that has made me aware of heat spread and damage. Going to practise on some off cuts of track before i attempt anything on the point.
Thank you for all the advice, i am here to learn.

The set is in the instructions under optional extras, i will give it a go on the next one.
Goods train Blandford
in Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Group

I had a go at modelling this, bought some Parkside wagons that matched as best i could find, close but not perfect.
This has got me thinking. I grew up in Blandford and have long thought about making a layout. I really like the Blandford museum layout and i think i will regret it if i dont have a go. I am going to focus on the north end of the station, single line from Salisbury st bridge to the platforms. I hope posters on here will be able to answer my many questions i will have.
@tingleytim photo has given me such inspiration.
