  1. Website is playing up, again! If you click to go to a range and nothing happens please try one of the other ranges. 7mm kits works but 4mm doesn't. Sanspareil models and Lost & Foundry don't work but SteamAle does. Go into either and the rest of the areas come up and work. Any problems let me know. Philip
  2. I hope the house extension includes a dedicated railway room.
  3. I didn't take any photographs. Turned out my camera memory card was full. Did you mange to take any photos of the 'little' locos that I brought along for you to look at? Several visitors were impressed with them. Several books sold, some lwb castings and a loco kit meat that it was worth my while going to all the effort of shoe horning everything into my car. Met and put faces to some names that I knew, so will help in the future. Like you I was impressed with the 3D printing but don;t have the time to learn how to 'do it all'. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with in the future. Philip
  4. Doncaster O gauge show 11.6.22. Iain is attending with a range of O gauge modles and accessories. Lots of little boxes to search through. You'll need to ask about the new Lost and Foundrey castings that he has with him. Full range of the GWR Locomotive kits available, including the 1366, at last! Look at the model on the test track running up and down. Just to prove that it is almost complete and ready to launch. His latest kit that is the Rolls Royce of kits. You'll not get one as good as this to build. Runs like a dream. It will be going for haulage trials when it returns to Carlisle. Can't make the show? Go to cspmodels.com for the complete range of available kits. Philip
  5. KETTERING O gauge show Sat 5 March 2022. Iain will be attending and have a number of kits from the former Zero Zephyr range available to purchase, including a Fireless model, along with loads of Lost & Foundry lost wax brass castings. There are also loads of packs of whitemetal parts and some brass ones for you to look through and make very sensible offers for them. Profile milled couping rods. Limited stocks and when they're gone they will not be available again, you have been warned! Couple of kit built French models to clear. All to be found on the Saspariel stand. See you there.
  6. No way can you stop doing exhibitions! How will everybody who does not use this site get to see how good a modeller you are?
  7. Jamie MRJ dropped through the letterbox this morning and your article about the OLE, for LGE, is in it. Not had time to read it yet but will, eventually. Philip
  8. They do look nice, don't they? I've still got to put mine together (Charlie gave me some of his castings). Tried to find the time but other things keep getting in the way. My trouble is I enjoy helping others but that then stops me doing things for myself. Never get the balance right, maybe one day! Hope eveybody is keeping well and looking forward to things improving next year! Philip
  9. And then, Nothing! Well I did write a lengthy post, that had taken over an hour, to update things. While checking it all I hit a key, not certain which one, and lost everything. So peed off I decided not to spend time posting when I had so much else to do. So what has hapened in the intervening years? I had major surgery on my neck several months ater Covid made an appearence, in a Covid hospital. I was only kept in one night instead of the usual five. Boy did I suffer! The Tram has moved to a new home, five months after my surgery. Lots of physical exercise that I'd been told to avoid actually did my neck some good, but not recommended. The family all got Covid 19. I broke a toe. SWMBO is not well as her bone cancer has returned with a vengence. Eldest granddaughter had fantasic exam results and is now at university studying to be a Mental Health Nurse. Nursing runs in the family. So, what about the layout? The thread was planned to be a record of a build and for the history of the layout. Having dismantled everything, produced a pile of track and bits of wood it was time to move on. The plan, well what there was of one, was to build ten 4' x 2' boards, giving a floor plan of 20' x 4', the same length but a foot wider. This would allow me to use the CDOGG fiddle yard if an extra four foot board was built for it. As previously mentioned I was going to use foam board but not being as clever as a certain modeller who has had his foam board build published in MRJ I wanted a bit of belt and braces. 3 and 6mm MDF was my choice for the board sides the ends being 2.5cm block board, thick enough for alighnment dowels purchased through the EMGS. For the braces I used 2.5 x 5cm planed wood. These choices were maybe not the best in hindsight! assembling the inner sides to the planed wood. Mixture of old and new clamps. First boards going to going together. On the right hand side is the front of the layout. Of five boards the two outside end ones have higher edges as the ground will rise, they may be trimmed in the fullness of time. Looking at the nearest board you can see the planed wood, on which the foam rests, the holes for the locating dowels and the 3mm MDF. The planed wood will be very useful when the boards have to be lifted and shifted.
  10. Dougal Clicked on link to read your post and it was not there! View came up full screen width and I could not get past August posting. Went back to e-mail and clicked on Topic heading rather than go to this posting. Took me to page six and then I got to nine and found your post. Aspatria has not been updated because I spent over an hour typing up a posting one night pressed a button and lost everything. Couldn't be bothered to spend time trying to redo it all. There again nothing has happenned to Aspatria for several months due to a family crisis after broken toe in June. Workington show went very well and Port Solway in S4 with a rake of M&CR chauldron wagons running made my weekend. Philip
  11. until
Workington Model Railway Exhibition, is to be held 'AT LAST' again after having had to cancel last year due to Covid 19 restrictions. There will be no restrictions or special requirements in place for visitors other than to provide a contact phone number or e-mail address for Track and Trace, which will only be used if somebody who attends subsequently tests positive. Ten Layouts have been booked to attend, several of them with a very local interest. Maryport is presented by Bill Moon, of Workington, and is based on his memories of times past, when he used to sit and watch the trains. Cockermouth Covid 19 is another new layout from Andrew Holland, who lives at Lowca. As the name suggests it was built during the first Covid lockdown using bits and pieces from around the house. The main board is an old door. Recycling at its best! To increase the operational interest some of the sidings have been replaced, on the model, that were removed many years before the period being modelled. Port Solway is a large layout, built by members of the Newcastle Model Railway Club. It is a 'might have been' layout that brings together the North Eastern Railway, who extended their line from Carlisle to the coast, and they allowed the Maryport & Carlisle Railway running powers, to add operational interest. Nearly all of the stock is scratch or kit built to Scalefour standards. Recently added is a rake of chauldron wagons, which were the first type to be used to move coal from the collieries to the coast. There is so much to see on the layout that you do need to allow plenty of time for a good look. Graham Morfoot, from Spalding, is making a welcome return with another of his layouts, Ellasweet Beet Factory. As the name suggests it is all about the sugar beet industry, that is prevalent in the east of the country, showing how this essential foodstuff was moved from the fields to the customer. One lump or two? Two more regular attendees are Les Nehrlich, from Preston, with Upper Cwmtwych, an 'N' gauge layout showing an emergency servicing and refuelling depot for diesel locomotives. Terry Tasker, from Southport, brings Wulstanton Road, another 'N' gauge minimum space layout, showing what you can make in a small space, that has lots of operational interest being run in the period between the 1990's and today. Another regular attendee is Marc Dobson, from Dalton-in-Furness. Scratchy Bottom, yes there is such a place! A large 'O' gauge layout that just seems to have 'grown' over the years as more stock has been built or acquired. To add some more variety Ray O'Neill, from Workington, brings an American switching layout, Franklin Falls NH. Ray likes to spend time shunting freight cars (goods wagons in English) and uses cards to decide which one will go to where, on the layout. No two sequences are the same as a result! After trying to persuade him to bring a layout, for some time, Ian Blenkinsop, from Seaton, has agreed to bring one of his layouts, again a small one, called South Galleons. It is described as a 'pastiche of Deptford in the 1950's'. The attention to detail on the layout has to be admired, as there is so much to look at, that the trains rolling through are almost incidental to the model. Rod Moore, who used to run the Cumberland Toy Museum for many years in Cockermouth, has an interesting display of card models. Nearly every modeller has at en time or another used card on their layout and Rod 'shows you how' you can as well. He is more than happy to talk and let you have a go at making something yourself. Finally Brian Irwin will bring some of his Garden Railway models indoors to show how easy they are to run. The event is supported by a group of trade stands that will be able to provide almost anything the modeller needs. One of which is coming all the way from Bognor Regis. To help individuals get the most from their models, demonstrators 'showing you how to' will be on hand. If it is making a layout from scratch using finescale track, weathering your models, building kits or models from scratch then somebody will be able to help. The venue is served by regular bus services from Workington and Whitehaven railway stations, using Service No:- 29. On Saturday, via Lillyhall, it stops right outside the Energus building. Sunday there is a 20 minute walk from Harrington Road. Energus building, Blackwood Road, Lillyhall, Workington - Post Code CA14 4JW, where there will be free car parking and outstanding refreshments. The exhibition will be open from 10am until 5pm on Saturday 20th November and, from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 21st November. Admission costs have been held for the NINTH year at £5.00 for adults with accompanied children free. Also included is a free programme listing everything on display while stocks last. 12. Ian Thought you'd got the whistle in the wrong place at first. Looked at Fleetwood's images and sure enough it is where you have placed it. Neve noticed before. We live and learn Philip
  13. Ian If there is one in the CSP Models range I can get one for you. Have a skim through the website and let me know. Good to know that all is going well with you. Just the big switch on to come? You might want to look at this posting if not already seen: - Philip
  14. Quite right. Must keep to Cumbria. Will you be purchasing some M&CR Chauldren wagons?
  15. Baz Unfortunately the Lottery Grant for the 1950's town is someway short of what they needed so money has been pulled from other areas to fill the gap and guess what? The Railway and Trams are not getting the work done on them as a result. In addition a senior member of staff was prosecuted for missuse of funds, if I remember rightly. I had a friend that worked there until last year who left because he worked in the restoration department. The good news is that lots of bits have been going to the Stainmore Railway Co, based at Kirkby Stephen East, who are making an excellent job of restoration. They are helping the J21 restoration project as well. Philip
  16. Bad news about the ledgers. It is now thought that they were thrown out by another lady of the house that did not know that they had been oferred free to a good home by her sister! Arghhhhhhh.
  17. Following the sad passing of Adrian the Zero Zepher range of Steam Locomotives has been purchased by CSP Models and some of the items will be reintroduced in the fullness of time. Please visit cspmodels.com to check for updates. Philip
  18. Dougal This came out of the blue and is an amazing find. Full of detail and as you say increases the number of images of High Blaithwaite, that we know about, so far! Some MCR ledgers have surfaced and I'm hoping we can get to see them in the fullness of time. Covid 19 restrictions have prevented anybody from getting to them at present. I do wonder what will turn up next? Philip
  19. Slightly off current topic but thought you wouldn't mind me dropping in with the following announcement: - The Cumbrian Raiways Association offered to pay to have the original Maryport & Carlisle Railway Rolling Stock plans, held by Carlisle Library in thier Jackson collection, scanned. With all the problems of lockdown etc. we did not think it would happen but it has! They were taken to Carlisle Archive Centre to be scanned, at nil cost to the CRA in the end! The CRA now has some very large TIFF files with them in. The Library have now loaded the images into the Cumbria Image Bank and the tinyurl will take you there! I do believe that these are some of the earliest drawings in existence for this type of stock. Please enjoy and feel free to share far and wide. https://tinyurl.com/y4vzbt43 Philip CRA Chairman
  20. Just to whet your appetite you could go further back! 21. Well, what can I say? Good news and bad! You're still with us. Pains have gone. All good. Then you have had a heart attack. Hopefully the cause of the attack can be sorted so that it does not happen again. I wish you well and a speedy recovery. Now my memory is not what it used to be and in 1976 I was working in the West Cumberland Hospital, probably in the Cardiac Care Unit, when I was in charge on night shift. I had not even qualified at that time but in those days if you were short staffed then you made the best use of the staff and as I was regarded as being proficeint then I was asked to do it. Nowadays they would close the unit rather than leave an unqualified person in charge. Never killed anybody and did help save a few! So I was not really doing much in the way of railway modelling at that time so what was so good about the Modeller in that year?
  22. The Zero Zephyr O gauge Steam Locomotive range has been acquired by cspmodels.com and work is ongoing to sort through everything with the aim of bringing them back to the market in due course. Burton tank and Fireless Andrew Barcley will probably be first. Philip
