  1. Some time ago, I put up a request for a bit of help with the signalling on one of the technical boards. (I still haven't got my head around it!)

As it was my assumption that the GWR had put in proper signalling to run more than one locomotive, it got quite complex.

There also seemed to be any number of options. I had originally intended to site the signal box at the western end of the station, so that the crossover and entrance to the goods yard were on the shortest rod run.

This was countered by the assertion that the box would be next to the crossing to operate that as well.

I was thinking that the engine shed would have a manually operated point. But that's no longer relevant.

So the size of the box has increased and it would be better off elevated to give a view of the opposite end of the station trackwork.

But I still don't think that the station warrants any of the "standard" boxes that are available in kit form. It was always the intention to at least partly scratch build the box.

I was thinking of something like this box from Bryn Teify. It's not that large or high and it doesn't look like a kit.

  2. Knew it was Birmingham area but not the district. Thanks, I will pass it on. I wasn't sure of the date but would say that the photo was mid 1930s

Any help on dating the machine from the registration number would be much appreciated.

I have to confess that I don't know much about Velos, not having had much to do with them. A friend has recently bought a Venom. The answer to the usual questions are:

Yes, he bought it from an old bloke.

Yes, it has been converted to electric start.

No, it doesn't work properly. :D

  3. Very nice job Indeed. Another bit done that you can rightly be proud of. I have got to make one of the old wooden Great Western type. That's given me an idea!

  4. What would put me off having one of those two wheels at the front scooters is the fact that Chris Evans had one for a start. :D

As for the price of big bikes, yes it's ridiculous. Unfortunately in the UK the people who are buying seem to be age 50, good job, house paid off, kids grown up etc. The problem is that there is very little new blood coming in. What with the complications of getting a bike at 16/17 and the absolute garbage machinery that is available ( anyone who thinks otherwise should have a look behind my friends workshop, a mountain of broken down dross for which parts are either unavailable or cost more than the bike is worth ) l suspect that the motorcycle market will get smaller as teenagers will buy and run a car for less money and typical of most manufacturers, the price will go up to compensate.

  5. Never seen anti slip bars on towpaths except for in an arc around lock gates to give foot purchase for whoever opened them. The barge is easier for a horse to pull than a cart, which is why a horse can pull 20 tons or more on water. He would be very unlikely to slip.

  6. I have had a happy half hour or so this afternoon replacing the front brake shoes on the A7, which of course extended into cleaning, polishing and dealing with paint chips. The shoes weren't particularly worn, but the bonded asbestos free repro linings appear to have turned into something resembling cereal packets. Worryingly it had started to break up at the leading edges so the brake grabbed at low speed and felt spongy stopping from higher speed.

At least it's an easy job.

I’ve soaked it in all sorts of things. The problem is that there are long internal passages with bends, one with a ball valve and the solvent can’t penetrate.

That's one of those things that ticks my pet hate boxes. I suppose that the plugs from the cross drillings aren't removable. That would be too simple (and maintenance friendly) of course. Compressed air, long nylon brush bristle or fishing line.

Failing that, have you tried to see how far you can throw it? :D

  8. If you cut some chunks of thick cardboard this shape ish and lay them against the bank. You should then be able to put a top on it for your rough wooden steps / anti slip bars viz.

Excuse the grotty drawings, but the wolf's paws are covered in crud at present due to being in the middle of some specialised motorcycle swearing.

  9. That would be a good get out. The picture I posted has a ramp to one side and the surrounding area has been patched up more than once.

To paraphrase The (original) Italian Job: "Hang on lads, I've just had a great idea...."

Have I taken my cobblestones too far out?

I think that's a personal matter entirely between you and your Memsahib...

Seriously though, I don't think it is all that critical, but I haven't personally seen them extend more than a few feet from the bridge, except in industrial areas or on the approach to a lock.

All this talk of canals, I'll be wearing a velveteen jacket and listening to @#£*ing folk music...

Must get RRH to play some of her godless jazz / rock n roll music quick!
