They could of been a very nice product if they’d not been totally mismanaged from day one

That said, in hindsight they'd have been better off ordering more 802s. My understanding was the CAF stuff was ordered due to Hitachi's inability to deliver enough units in time, but CAF were late anyway and so they ended up with 3 new fleets that could have been one.

Willing to be corrected if I am wrong with my thinking.

Warm store until Spring 2024 when the current TPE lease on them runs out.

    Then - who knows...?

Wow, didn't think anyone would fund the lease of new stock for only 5 years. Unless TPE have been paying a LOT for them. That said, I know very little about rail leasing.

Are the latest 156 models still made by Rapido? There logo is absent from the box images online. Just curious.

It's all over the manual so I presume so!

Yeap, done this before with my Provincial unit, no issue and followed the right procedure. Since taken it up with DC and LMB - followed advice given, same result.

Surely you can program the car in question to only have the lights on if a function is not active, so you set like F10 to disable the lighting but only do it on the one car?

Because it hasn't had an actual official announcement yet.

    What we have had:

    1. A hint it would be announced at the following annual announcement. It wasn’t.

    2. The accidental publication and subsequent removal of the product page.

    3. A livery sample shown at a model railway show. IIRC it was shown alongside the then to be annouced club LNER P2 model.

    4. Mentions of it in the club magazine.

On top of that, I do recall seeing an advert or something teasing it (with a pic that made it obvious what loco was being talked about).

but I`ll go and put in on the rolling road and check it

Thanks. I will run mine on my layout today or tomorrow.

Something I also noticed is the nameplates in the bag are smaller than those printed onto the loco. Can see the edge at both ends.

  6. Has anyone noticed some slack in the third driving axle? I am running mine in on the rolling road and that axle is wobbling a fair bit, it's like there's slack on the bearings. All other axles are OK. The third axle is the one that is driven by the motor so I think it might be to give the mechanism some compliance.

I think you are right that I will be waiting a while for another GWR class 158.

Keep a look in second hand shops/stalls, they'll appear in good nick I reckon. I find it remarkable the amount of stuff that is sold that never does much.

    Hi Tom,

may I ask which version of Lokpilot you are using? I ask because I’ve installed the MTC version (59659) and an unable to use Aux 3 & 4. Looking at the destructions, it appears they are solder tab functions unfortunately.

    cheers!

    Bob

I was successful with Lokpilot 4 and 5, 21 pin MTC non MKL version. Unsure if it was the DCC or standard but I don't think that makes a difference.

Have you checked the switches underneath?

I am hoping Bachman will release another batch of class 158s in GWR green as I sadly missed out on the first batch.

You might be a while, didn't they do two runs of GWR green? Might be the same number.

    Mine arrived yesterday:

A very smart looking wagon. Noticeably lighter than Accurascale's offering but the detail is top notch. I haven't compared then side by side yet.

    Ed

It will be interesting to see how they compare.

I went with the Revolution one for two reasons.

    1. I preferred the look of the EP in terms of the etchings and details.

    2. The biggest reason, it could be bought individually. I only want one.

You’re right. In one of Bachmann’s announcement videos (which I can’t find now), Steve Purves explained that he had talked to drivers and they told him that they didn’t use cab lights because they destroyed their night vision. He also noted that MUs ran with their rear cab lights on for the convenience of the guard. It may be correct prototype practice but I can’t say I like it. Bachmann then dropped the ball by having the rear cab light extinguish when the unit started to move. This was on the 159 – that particular whimsical touch may have been sorted on newer models.

The thing is, they should (in my opinion) have every single controllable item, controllable by a single function on the decoder. So I can put a good decoder in and set it up exactly how I want. ESU decoders (which in my opinion have the best function mapping) can do what would be extremely difficult to recreate on a physical board.

The flip side to that is that to a lot of people they can't/won't understand or have interest how to program it to do that so there needs to be another option.

Then use switches to activate any functionality on DC or DCC (with lesser decoders). Dapol Class 68 and Hattons 66 style.

The thing I aren't so keen on is when manufacturers put logic on the board and get it wrong*. At least on decoders that allow it, the logic is programmable.

*Wrong either vs real life or vs what the buyer wants to make happen

Not sure how different they are but they have done 2 159's.

If anything is different on the model I think it will be seating and possibly first class provision if that affects the body.

will we see 3 car sets in the future, they dont seem to want to produce them?

I personally would have rather had a 3 car Northern, but am certainly not complaining at chance of a 2 car!

If anyone else attempts the aforementioned 'taping of the contacts' to isolate the lights at one end please take some photos of the process

It is straightforward, when you get it you'll see. Remove bodyshell. Unscrew PCB retaining screw. Unclip PCB at the ends (from the body). Turn over the PCB. Apply tape over the contactor pads at the end you wish to isolate. Put back together.

I was rather surprised that they chose to build the version which Gresley rebuilt because it failed to meet expectations. They do seem confident that they can get it right, though.

What parts of it that were problematic are still on there?

I thought a lot of the mechanical items were very similar/identical to Tornado, or completely redesigned.
