  1. Well I was surprised, the nameplates in the accessory pack are etched by the looks of things.

only scraped some of the back just to see for myself, this I’ll repaint black again at a later date to stop the brass being shown from behind.

I learnt today from my wife that the collective name for a group of P2s is "toomeni"...

Anyway, here are some pictures of monterous green engines with some big green engines to act as a comparison for LNER livery applications.  My phone camera is not the best, so apologies for the quality of the pictures (obviously the equipment at fault and def not the operator).  Usual caveate applies re. colour: inside under LED lighting, on digital sensor, displayed with *insert screen type here* screen.

    Some observations:-

    • 2002 Earl Marishal = as built condition (as already reported) (--> Suppose I can definatively answer my own question in the other thread!)
    • 2002 accessory bag does include guard irons, but 2003 and 2005 do not.
    • 2002 cab roof correctly has no ventilators behind and above the driver and fireman.  Both 2003 and 2005 do. <--Anybody know when this mod was applied? When built, they did also did not have them.  2006 built from new with these ventilators based on experience with the others (so says Yeadons).
    • They are heavy
    • 2003 and 2005 -Join visible where the Bugatti smokebox component mates to the boiler section (not visible on 2002) as reported by @AdamOrmorod but not as noticeable (to me) and not a deal breaker. 2005 does seem to suffer more.
    • Slight witness of tool parting lines at 10 o'clock & 2 o'clock on 2002.
    • Accessory name plates appear to be brass and not plastic (as reported by @Steam here!) after scratching the paint away on the back of the fret holding them and seeing a shiny brass colour.  Well, this is the case with 2002.  Didn't check the others.
    • The close coupling is Ree Modeles good.
    • Line lining on the front of the cab is very nice and shows up earlier examples of black borders being too large
    • Pleased with them.

Hi Palmsticks, thanks for all the info, is there a chance we could see the nameplates from the accessory pack with the brass showing?

when I looked at mine the other day for “Lord President”, they didn’t feel etched, there was more of a plastic feel to them.

I’ve also emailed Hornby regarding the guard irons, that were missing from 2003 & 2005, waiting for a reply.

Yes my 2005 doesn't have them either, although all other parts are there.

Did you ask Hornby directly about it?

No not yet, but going to send an email tonight and fingers cross, they’ll send some out.

not sure if all four variants/ releases are missing the guard irons.

  4. I’ll be interested to know if anyone else is using second radius curves is having a similar experience, I tested mine (it was on a straight peice of track, I’ll get some 3rd radius curves out when I get some free time)and see how it performs). I’ll be using minimum 3rd/4th radius and streamline points on the next layout.

Overall, I think it’s a great loco, very well built and there’s good weight for traction, very detailed cab, firebox flicker, improved loco to tender connection.

Like the new boxes these are coming in and the information that’s printed on the side and the updated service/manual sheets.

I think these new P2S will do very well and looking forward to receiving the other three as well.

And can't do second radius and reverse just slows down

Thanks Adi, I thought it was just me being unlucky.

I’ll take a look at your review, can’t do second radius?

I would of thought it would of managed like “Cock O’ the North”

could be a back to back issue, could be too much play on the pony truck?

The good news, I’ve been told I can swap the accessory pack for a complete one.

  6. Hi all, I picked my P2 on the other day 2003 “Lord President” and have just noticed in the accessory pack it’s missing the guard irons.

    is anyone missing there’s?

Apart from that a really nice loco.

Thank you, it does help. However, I don’t like both cab lights coming on and going out at exactly the same time and I’ll be insulating the contact points for the rear cab. Directional cab lights would have been better and individually switched cab lights better yet.

Hi No Decorum sorry what I meant was directional cab lights (only one cab will light  up when is going in one direction).

  8. Well great news folks I now have cab lights working at both ends, how?

you need to remove tanks, battery case between the bogies 2X screws and the then four screws, one in each corner and then you need to look for two brass coloured ends (the ones that look like the end of a biro pen, if this sense and what you may find is one of them is stiff and just have to free it.

    hope this helps.

  9. So what do we get in the box?

    • A user manual

    • An accessory pack including: 2X narrow tension lock couplings, 4X cab steps, 4X brake rods (I think there brake rods), 2X screw link couplings and 4 pipes (2X steam heating & 2X vacuum?).

    • A second accessory bag with metal numbers and letters.

    • A leaflet promoting the Gas Turbine 18100.

  10. Mine arrived Tuesday and as a result of it not being able to go around 2nd radius curves I had to buy a rolling road.

(probably not the best set up but, it does the job).

Still a lovely model and have to say I’m impressed with it so far.

Very heavy probably not as heavy as Kestrel but certainly a contender.

Has anyone mentioned about about the cab lights only working at one end?

which end is the front? (End one)?

They certainly got to Whitby via both the Esk Valley and the Pickering line. However they were banned from the eastern end of the Teesside to Loftus/Whitby route, certainly after the Skinningrove area. I do know of at least one working from Whitby as far as Cloughton, but whether that working got as far as Scarborough I don't know. I don't think they were allowed past West Auckland on the Stainmore route either.

Hi MarkC, interesting regarding the Esk Valley and Pickering, it's fantastic news they got to Whitby.

It's also good news that they used the former Scarborough to Whitby Railway and got as far as Cloughton.

I would like to have thought that they did get to Scarborough and possibly stopped at Scalby and Gallows Close good yard on the way.

From what I've heard, I think Scarborough had a round house, so it would seem wise for the J27s to carry on to Scarborough, get topped up with water and coal, get turned round and head back to Whitby.

On the plus side, it means I'll be using my J27 for branch line freight.

Here's a 1967 view of 65892 at Pelaw with what appears to be be a load of logs.

And here's the actual 65817 at Low Fell in 1965 with the type of job most of us remember

    Trevor

Thanks Trev52A, really interesting photos, I find it really bizarre though, logs being carried in mineral wagons, first time I've seen this happen.

On the plus side, I have some flexibility now, coal or log loads.

Any goods, unfitted trains only of course, but they're famous for hauling coal in their last days.

Don't know of any early film, plenty in late BR days.

    A few from 2 min.

And here from about 5 min.

Thanks Worsdell Forever,  that' s a great help, that's the sort of thing I was looking for.

  14. Well I picked up my NER P3/J27 on Saturday and just can’t believe the value for money.

Straight out of the box, it ran smoothly and quietly, now ran in both directions,  what a lovely loco.

Now fitted with no: 20 Kadees at both ends, the loco won’t take anything smaller due to the hook coming out so far.

I went for the LNER red lined version no: 1214.

I really wanted a pre-grouping liveried version, this will do though.

Here it is seen pulling a goods train, the equivalent of 194Tons (including a 20Ton brake van).

Just out of curiosity did these just pull coal wagons only, or did they do other types of freight?

Would anyone know if there are any records, photos or films of these working on branch lines, during the NER, LNER or BR period?

  15. Experimenting with Hornby’s LMS Princess Coronation no: 6220 “Coronation” and the Coronation Scot coaches (all 9 of them).

I now know that I only need another 4 platform straights, to get the whole train in and a bigger board.

Overall I’m pleased with the result I have at the moment (getting a visual idea of how the “Coronation Scot” will look).

This will be the biggest type of trains I will want to run.

with amount of empty space on the rest of the platform, I have a couple of things in mind.

As for the station names they will remain the same, I’ve also been looking at other names as well fictitious of course.

    Station names:

    Sierraton

    Roversmith

    Fordington

    Vauxwell

    Carltonholme

    Eastlingby

    Eastlington

    Eastdale

  16. Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I last posted on my layout.

The layout itself is on hold and will be for some time.

I’ve been working on ideas in the background and have learnt from so many mistakes from the first layout.

Here is a mock up of the Bachmann Great Central Station. To give me more of an idea of how things could look.

The longest train will probably be the LMS Coronation Scot (Which I have to unbox all 9 coaches and loco again). This will be one of the biggest trains I will want to run on the new layout as for now the old main line is just reduced to a 2nd radius loop purely for running in locos and taking photos.

Here you are seeing 9 X Hornby Gresley coaches.

IIRC, the grey livery model was based on a picture taken in 1921.

Query whether the crew were as likely to have stripped back the brass beading during wartime.

EDIT: Said photograph, and it's October 1920

Thanks for your help Edwardian, that's a great help.

The loco looks to be in really good condition considering it's a couple of years or there just about after the 1st world War.

  18. I did some experimenting earlier on this evening regarding a haulage test using the Bachman SE&CR birdcage coaches. (A hill start at the bottom of the 2% gradient followed by 2nd radius curves).
Plus weight comparison of some 4-4-0’s and the other SE&CR related locos released just for comparison.

    First up comparison of 4-4-0

Bachmann GWR no: 3440 “City of Truro , 295grams, max haulage capacity 9X coaches

Hornby L&SWR no: 120 (no traction tyres, 2021 version), 210grams, max haulage capacity  6x coaches.

Dapol SE&CR no: 488 (no traction tyres), 230grams, max haulage capacity 9X coaches

    Bachmann SE&CR C class no: 583, 245 grams, max haulage 9X coaches.

    Hornby SE&CR H class no: 308, 168grams, max 9X coaches.

    Hattons SE&CR P class no: 27, 122 grams 9X coaches.
