On here twice in one week! Just a quick progress report!!
Not done much in the shed this week, but have made a little progress on some of the building that are going to come into play later on in the project, but with a dodgy knee I didn't fancy going on my hands and knees to get under the layout, so I opted for staying in the warmth of the house!!
As a put in my previous posting,
I was looking at buildings with a "midland" theme, and after looking through a number of books from our club library to see if there was a prototype that would give me a suitable base idea to work from!
In the "springfield" plan there is scope for a small station on the east end upper curve and after looking at a every station on the s&c I'd narrowed it down to pretty much two of the main locations along the line, the first was "Horton in ribblesdale", now just a straight forward two platform intermidate station with a " small " midland main station building on one side and a waiting room on the other side served with a simple " duck board" foot crossing at the south end. This was pretty much ticked all the boxes, as far as simpisty goes but I just wanted something with a bit more interest so I've oped to use "Dent" as my prototype ideas base.
Both stations have a lot of similarity, but even though both locations have lost there point work, signal boxes and cattle docks the station at dent had a few more small details that i'm going to put onto model, with the main station building being on the outside of the curve, and the small side building still being in place at dent ( originally coal store & porters room on the left of the main structure) this will fit on the out side of the upper radius curve nicely and with the waiting room on the other side having a large retaining wall that as well as being high, wraps round the rear or the building creating a interesting feature, especially if I put some of the snow drift fences made from old sleepers in there!
The bigger thing is probably the position of " the coal road" brick road bridge at the north end of the station that will on the model act as a really good scenic brake and the natural lay of the land falling down hill behind the main station building towards the village of dent some 5 miles south west that will also fit well on the model as there is only a single track section without much elevation at that point for the lower fiddle yards access so I can make an embankment without to much clearance problem.
I've spoken to rob Harrison, who I consider to be a real master at "building weathering" detail and after seeing the work he's being doing on John holdens lime street project, really bringing another dimension to the already superb detail, he was the man to ask about the detail.
he has already given lots of pointer to bring the stone work to life...... So I'm going to start practicing !
Thanks for following and ill get some pickys of the signal box soon !
Cheers spike
