  1. At the risk of frothing off the deep end, how about more 45/46 variants?  Flush front and split box?  Or is the Peak too long in the tooth now?

Presumably they can utilise the new Class 40 Chassis as the existing Peak chassis is not DCC  ready. The bodies are perfectly OK. I would certainly like some more Peaks especially the split-headcode version.

  2. No Hornby pay x for a product and sell it to the retailers at y that is their profit. The retailer sells it at z so that is the RETAILERS profit and not split with Hornby.

    Not quite...

Assume Hornby pay £50 for a product.

Assume that Hornby sell this to the Retailer for £100, therefore Hornby have made a £50 profit.

The Retailer sells the product for £150, therefore they also make a £50 profit.

Hornby decide to cut out the Retailer & sell direct for the same £150, they make a £100 profit.

More realistically they undercut the retailer, who may be selling at a discount anyway, and sell the product for £120 thus making a £70 profit.

In the above scenario Hornby make more profit by selling direct but they may be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

As a long-term Hornby Shareholder I really hope that they sort themselves out.

  3. I have placed several orders with Hattons over the last few years and was about to place another when I noticed that one of the items was no longer listed on their website. The item concerned was a Farish DMU which is still in stock at Bachmann & is available from most other retailers. I used the online chat facility to ask if the item would be back in stock and the response was that it had been discontinued by Hattons. I can see today that another widely available item has also gone missing from their website. My order, worth several hundred pounds, will now be going to one of their competitors. Not impressed.

  4. I think the the Esso livery version will be most popular & I will be ordering the triple-pack Esso branded version. If there was a second Esso triple-pack, with different running numbers from the first, then I would order this also. Perhaps you could offer a six-pack?

I will also be wanting a triple-pack of the Esso branded Class A tank if the project goes ahead.

  5. I remember going to watch Notts County vs Chelsea at Meadow Lane, when they were in the same division..........

In the 1990s I was a Season Ticket Holder at Brentford as I lived locally at the time. In 91-92 they were promoted to what is now the Championship. Some big names were in this league at the time and I saw Brentford play Leicester (my home town team who I first watched in the 57-58 season) as well as County (one of my Uncles team). Brentford were relegated at the end of the season as they finished one point behind Sunderland. Newcastle were also in the division and were promoted.

My local team is currently Maidstone United who I watched clinch a place in the Vanarama South Play-Off Final on Sunday. Big local derby at Ebbsfleet on Saturday for promotion the the Vanarama Conference.

  6. I just posted this on a similar thread on the NGF...

"I watched City for the first time in 1959 (may even have been '58) at Filbert Street. Over the years there have been many high points & more disappointments, notably the three FA Cup Final defeats in the '60s. I was at Wembley for two of these.

This season's achievement is incredible & makes up for all the near things over the years."

  7. By coincidence I've just walked along the Medway adjacent to Fairmeadow to buy a ticket for Maidstone United's promotion play-off match.

We moved to Maidstone in 2004 and Fairmeadow was certainly in existence then. It doesn't appear on the 1990 Ordnance Survey Map so Del's earlier post is almost certainly correct.

The bridge still has the Railtrack notice attached but it  doesn't show a date.

  8. I've always thought that the south end of Leicester (London Road) station would make a good basis for a model. Busy spot with a good variety of traffic in a rather cramped location.

Apart from some of the signs on the station, the scene had changed little from steam days. One could almost imagine the "Midland Pullman" drifting out from beneath the overbridge.....

Yes I have been thinking the very same thing during the last few days. I do have a picture of the Midland Pullman drifting beneath the overbridge! Most of my trainspotting was at Leicester (London Road) in the 1959-1966 period. I travelled in by train from Narborough although I ocassionally cycled in on a Sunday to stand on the Birdcage and creep round the Engine Shed. My current layout (N Gauge) is still under development and is based on the Midland Line between Wigston & Market Harborough but as always I am already thinking about the next layout.

That is a fantastic photo, do you know the date it was taken?

  10.

Is there maybe a need to be lobbying a specific livery when approaching Bachamnn?

For sure in BR blue and even beyond they were pretty common in pairs, but from what I can glean from my books at least, in early days somewhat less so.

I think the idea of a non-powered 20 is a good one. The reason I say this is because if everyone just says they think an unpowered 20 would be a good idea, it may not be considered. If, however they say they think a post TOPS 20 in Corporate Blue would be a good idea because...

...then just maybe...Bachmann can be persuaded.

I like Ben's idea of sale in pairs like Dapol and with this in mind a run of 504 weathered pairs of blue ones may just be the ticket and worth the risk.

    Just my thoughts.

I would like two Green liveried locos, ideally one unpowered and at least one with the Headcode Box. As they usually ran in pairs in the East Midlands (and most other areas) then I'm sure that a boxed pair would be popular.

Currently if I want a green pair then I need to purchase two of the current model & renumber one of them or wait until they bring out a green headcode box model.

  11. Ooh yes, very nice that. Perusing Colin Walker's 'Main Line Lament' I've found a likely suspect for one, namely 67756 on a Nottingham - Rugby Central local, nicely grimed up to boot B)

    Nidge

67781 & 67782 were both allocated to Leicester Central in 1960 so would have been employed on Leicester-Rugby locals.

  12. According to Steve Banks' book "The Birmingham to Leicester Line", 72008 was on Nuneaton Shed in August 1954 and was utilised for a local passenger service to Coventry.

72005 was on Leicester Shed in December 1964 after failing on the Carlisle - St.Pancras goods. This suggests that Kingmoor Clans worked the Midland Main line to the London area.
