  1. Slightly off topic, but my E class Manning Wardle was shunting East Lynn Quay at the Ally Pally show! Since the AGM I have bonded the axleboxes to the frames and cleaned the wheel treads. I am going to slightly alter the gearbox, by adding either brass plates or thrust bearings either side of the worm, as there is quite a bit of movement fore and aft.

  3. I think you'll find that 28mm figures are nearer to 1/64 than 1/56 unless your men are all about 5' tall. As to rail, until 1922 the standard main line rail was about 85lb/yd which was 5-15/32" high or code 85 in S. The British standards quote rail heights from 4-1/2" to 6-1/4" high, so finding something on the market should not be too difficult. I think that if you're going to invent a new scale, then rail will be the least of your problems. What will you do about wheels? Everything you want will have to be scratchbuilt with no aid from anyone else.
  4. As it looks like you're trying to find the ideal size to model in, go along to the Ally Pally show in March where you'll see two S Scale layouts on display, and your search will be over!

  6. You might have answered this elsewhere, but as someone who is attracted to TT-120 do the standard couplers work well in a shunting senario?
  7. Looking at the radii etc. for the Hornby track, it appears to be identical to the Tillig track system. As it is all made to the NEM standards, it should all work together. Don't forget, Hornby also own Arnold, so it would be silly for them not to make a compatable track system. All the standards are availablt to download on the MOROP website.

  9. Hi all, One way to get some gen on how to do S is, if you're a member, to come along to the Autumn meeting in October and chat to those who know. Invitations are in the forthcoming Gazette. If anyone wants a Gibson Jinty kit I have an unmade one available.
  10. If you ever have the chance to inspect the underside of a horse's hoof I think you'll find it looks very similar to the combination of the point, splice and wing rails. Oh, and that part of the foot is called: the frog!
  11. Hi All, I seem to remember that sometime someone posted a Templot scheme for Iain Rice's Minimal Goods layout as it appeared in his Urban Layout book. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate the thread, so maybe I am just imagining it! The available site is 8' x 2'6" but the layout is to be in S scale, not 4mm. Can anyone help? I have tried to lay the plan out using normal drawing means, but without success; I just cannot get the geometry right. SG
  12. A small curved gouge could be made from a short length of silver steel rod, drilled and countersunk in the end and then filed across the end to the diameter, if you see what I mean. If it was then hardened, tempered and sharpened it would be fine.
  13. They are Gresley bogies, but scale at 8'6". As there are six sides (all sub-masters from CMA Mouldform) I'll check with my drawings to see if one pair or three could be cut down to 8'0" and still look okay. If it will work then we could get both sizes cast and re-introduce them to the stock list. For my own models 8' would be better.
  14. I have some which I bought from another member; they are marked as 'masters', so presumably they are good castings for making a multiple mould. I can always send them to PG to get made into castings. It might be that they were just sold on as not being needed.

    PSI - your penultimate photo shows the late Sam Bonfield whose layout "Emwell" is currently being rebuilt by a member of the SSMRS.

  17. Can anyone help with locating the locomotive records, and hopefully drawings of R & W Hawthorn? Most of those I can locate refer to the later ship building records. I am looking for details of an 0-4-0T locomotive, works number 958 of 1856. It was named Havilah, and ordered by the Edenham Branch Railway. There was a photograph of it in The Locomotive Magazine in 1908: Thanks, SG
