Usual pair (I think under all the gunk/crud) today

And here they are, further into today's schedule, in the afternoon sunshine approaching Brighouse.

When I left the industry about ten years ago, the plans for scrapping and removing the reactor cores was  (I thought) well advanced; I'm surprised they seemingly haven't started implementing it yet.

I’d be reasonably confident that, as you say, the plans were well advanced.

What probably wasn’t and I would hazard a guess isn’t is the available budget, either from the Defence budget, or elsewhere to fund the delivery of the plan.

The report says that Phase 2a safeguarding will be lifted in the next few weeks, Phase 2b by summer next year once they have decided what needs to be kept for any NPR proposals.

    Goodbye Phase2

Which presumably by removing the safeguarding, would have the effect after any change of government at the next general election, of preventing any easy resurrection of HS2 plans north of Birmingham.

Oh for the MPs of old like Robert Adley who had the knowledge

Indeed.  He was very critical in the run up to rail privatisation as I recall, calling it a 'poll tax on wheels'.  I'm not sure that his criticism would be tolerated in the party these days

I dread to think what he'd make of todays announcement.

There is a good length of dual carriageway up the Aire Valley but it never went past Shipley. Which has been the pinch point since the Bingley bypass was finished in late 2003.  Maybe I'm being a bit cynical but I think that Shipley is a marginal constituency.

    Jamie

It's certainly not the only town in West Yorkshire that has traffic congestion, as I'm sure you know Jamie, but like many in this part of the country, that has much to do with the topography as anything else.

Yes, it could be considered marginal.  It was held by the 'other lot' until the current incumbent was elected in 2005.

Looking forwards to driving along the Shipley bypass.

    Where is Shipley ?

I’ve got some newts that want to migrate..

    😀

It's a town along the Aire valley to the west of Leeds and north of Bradford.

In days gone by there used to be a very good model railway show in the town in early September each year.

  7. Ah well.

After all the rhetoric, sound bites and headlines, the devil of 'Network North' will be in the detail.  Of which at the moment there's precious little.

I'm 64 years old.  With average male mortality currently in the low 80s I think I can be reasonably confident that I wont be alive to see the benefit of what Network North, eventually, may or may not deliver.

People may think 'what's this got to do with HS2?', with a big deficit and high debt government has to either raise more taxes, cut spending, grow the economy or a combination of all three. What it can't do is just press on and hope it'll all work out. HS2 is not in itself the problem, it is a small part of a much bigger problem.

    Absolutely.  100%.  Spot on.

And of course resolving this problem is unfortunately the root of the problem in the UK, as it’s where politics in all its different hues and dimensions has inevitably to enter the equation.

    What am I missing?

    Martin.

You're missing absolutely nothing at all.

In very basic terms, your description is an illustration of the economic theory of the 'fiscal multiplier' and the 'circular flow of money'.

    What a circus.

any sign of the ringmaster ?

I sometimes wonder what world these people live in, to think to hold a conference in a city they are thinking about cutting from the largest UK project in decades, and expect no one to talk about it ?

we had the clown show this morning but she said nothing about HS2, then we had the magician who forgot his tricks and he two pretended he had never heard of HS2.

Any sign of the dancing bear yet ? - i’d imagine he might open his mouth and let some words fall out.

Meanwhile the estate agent media are drinking the bar dry in hysterics and putting quotes from the audience and the bouncers on the front pages, talking about the only thing they wanted to hear about.

I think you're being far too polite.

This whole episode is now one gigantic Sh1t Show.

The ones I really feel sorry for are the hundreds of men and women up and down the country actively working to deliver HS2 for the country.

To misquote Churchill 'Never have so many been let down by so few'.

  12. I too was happy to support the Wakefield club in exchange for £9, and enjoyed my visit today.

It was a shame that Squires weren't there, I had my shopping list prepared, but hey ho.

Highlights for me, for a variety of reasons - Boomerang Lane, Burnroyd Works, Deadman's Lane and Downtown USA.

Also, a grateful thanks to the helpful chap from Normanton & Pontefract RMS, who invited me behind the barriers to show me the finer detail and construction of his Box Hill Depot and similar Box Hill Crossing and Box Hill Cement layouts.  You did much to rekindle my imagination and enthusiasm for building a realistic layout in a small space.  Thanks very much.

  13. Not wanting to challenge your geography or sense of direction, but are you sure that the 56s were headed south?

Two Colas 56s, 56049 Robin of Templecombe 1938-2013 and 56094, were working north through the area on 6S31, Doncaster Up Decoy Yard to Millerhill, around 2pm ish.

6S31 Doncaster Up Decoy Yard to Millerhill

According to a TOPS list no other Colas 56s were in the area around that time.
