  1. Further catalogue checks show that the BR wooden 13t opens have gone--though they may have gone before. Hopefully a fitted version will be produced in future--a much-needed vehicle to add variety to freights.

The Class 14 has gone too.

The unfitted 5-plank was a 9' wb ex-PO mineral wagon. The railway company-owned fitted general merchandise 5-planks and their BR-built equivalents were 10' wb; i.e. a different prototype(s), and would be a completely new wagon. British N has probably evolved past the stage where a single generic model can cover both.

  2. Whaaaaat? Glasgow to Edinburgh trains for years. Glasgow to Ayrshire trains until 1983. Many similar inter city DMUs (I don't care about detail or substantial differences as long as they get those ends right) in the west country wales and west midlands. Why do they need to be useful? Is the blue pullman useful? Is Tornado?

I was thinking for the 123s here rather than the earlier 126s, I think there were only 10 4-car sets built.

  3. We've already got a discussion on ground-breaking 00 locos, how about an equivalent thread for N?

    To set the ball rolling:

Lone Star D5000 (class 24). Lone Star were just a little too far ahead of their time in 1960, but their two British-outline diesels were pioneering models, despite their rather crude mechanisms.

Minitrix Warship. Though crude by today's standards and had dimensional compromises to fit a continental chassis, it was as good as any British-outline diesel or electric model before the 1980s, With its robust and reliable mechanism it was the workhorse of many a layout in the early years of British N

Peco/Rivarossi Jubilee. Credited with establishing 1:148 scale, it was way ahead of its time in terms of detail and accuracy. A bold step for Peco for commissioning this in the very early days of the scale.

Graham Farish class 47. This loco marked the point where Graham Farish went from a bit player to becoming the flagship British N manufacturer. In a different league to any main-line diesels before that point.

Dapol 45XX. The entry to Dapol into the marketplace forced Farish to raise their game. Though the mechanism leaves something to be desired today, in terms of detail and fidelity it was way ahead of any other steam outline model on the market at the time.

RevolutioN Pendolino. A game-changer in terms of business models, introducing the concept of crowdfunded models to the marketplace.

  4. C'mon. Inter-city DMUs are missing BIG TIME!

That's one of those charismatic models that may well sell (I'd buy one) even though there weren't very many of them, and are far less useful in practical terms that the far more mundane but numerous suburban or cross-country sets.

  5. If anyone's interested in my album of the year;

Part One (The longlist excluding the top 10)

Part Two (10 down to 6)

Part Three (5 down to 2)

Album of the year is still to come.

  6. And while I think about it, BGs in ScotRail and NSE liveries shouldn't be too difficult to produce and would complement some of the recent and imminent releases. I quite like the idea of being able to run a colourful parcels train with some GUVs in blue and Post Office red along with BGs in blue/grey, Post Office red, InterCity, NSE and ScotRail colours.

Don't know about the Scotrail one(s), but I don't think the NSE BG ever ran in parcels trains. Originally ran with an Thames NSE Mk1 set, later showed up in an inter-city Mk2 set with a mix of I/C and B/G coaches.  Saw it hauled by 50007 in June 1988, which made for a colourful train. Later repainted into Incer City colours.

  7. In terms of new tooling, the OO scale Thompson carriages could be shrunk.

Also Farish could announce a rebuilt Merchant Navy.

47s to be offered with cut-away cabs and long-range fuel tanks

2017 offers several possibilities for commemorative locos and train packs:

20th anniversary of the privatisation of BR - Railfreight Distribution 47 and VGAs

50th anniversary of the final regular Southern Region steam services - weathered, chalked-up Std 5 with mixed Bulleid and Mk 1 rake

    60th anniversary of BR's first pilot scheme diesels - class 20 D8000 and class 31 D5500

Not sure how a sector-era loco represents privatisation. 30th anniversary of Railfreight sub-sectors on the other hand?

For privatisation I'd suggest an EWS 37, or a 159 in the early Stagecoach colours. Or the TGS and Buffet in "Merlin"colours  to complete the HST set they did when that livery is current...
