Jeff
ps. Andy (uax) - you're right - we've almost caught Peterborough (in posts; only another 190,000 views needed....)
Hi Jeff
Is this going to be the minature version of the Race to the North, LMS versus LNER?

I've done a couple more "centre-valley formers" - the 2 nearest the viaduct. I've also inserted a "guide" piece of 2" x 1" so I know exactly where the middle formers will go... as explained above, they have to be removed until I've built the first part of the hillside.
A couple of photos.
I'm effectively out of timber now, so I'll go and order some more tomorrow...
Jeff
Hi Jeff
Love the viaduct very S&Cish, but, from a practical point of view can you reach the viaduct if something derails on it or have I missed somethong inprevious posts? the law of s*d dictates if something is going to derail it will do so in the most inacessible place.

Jeff, your the one who is supposed to come up with the subject matter, not us!
Had a thought about what I would like to achive with the viaduct in a box and came to the conclusion that to run a scale length train through it it would have to be 18 foot long, which is longer than my house! So it's on the very back burner now. Maybe your idea about a station platform and siding might be better. Maybe The Mound would be the place?
Andy G
Hi Andy
Just a suggestion, and keeping the S&C theme, how about Culgaith?

Hi Steve
Thanks for that, I had seen the "future" stock photos, but, the query regarding the non deflector Duchess came about because the 1947 LMS period would be my period of choice and sorting out the loco variations that could be run even within classes is a minefield.

It's uncommonly quiet on here!!
Jeff
Hi Jeff
It's uncommonly quiet on RMweb as a whole, I've had no topic notifications for anything I follow since I got into work this morning for any of the ones I follow, so I'm getting on with the WTT for you and mike, about halfway through at the moment with another 5 hrs of my shift to finish, but traffic is starting to get busier now.

Hi
In the articles I have read about his layout it states the layout is set during 1947, but, one of the photos of the layout I have seen shows a Duchess in Crimson without smoke deflectors, while I was aware that locos survived the war still in crimson can I ask if the duchess is correct for the period without deflectors or is it and out of period loco you use. No critisism intended just interested.

Now this sounds VERY promising! I hope you'll start a thread in the S&C section. The more active layouts on here, the better.
Jeff
Hi Jeff & all Lunesters
Not sure yet about starting a thread, 2 reasons
1. Dent Head jc/Arten Gill Jc is one of 2 plans I am considering, the other is ex LNWR(Coventry) which wouldn't fit isn the S&C section
2. Having started a couple of other layout threads, only to discover my ambition was bigger than my ability I am reluctant to commit it to the web as I don't want to be percieved on RMweb as someone who "keeps changing his mind about his layout"

Ian, the Jenkinson layout looks good - and if he built it then you can guarantee it was a good plan. Looks very large though - 21' if each square is 12". How much space do you have?
Jeff
Hi Jeff
I have 22ft of length inclusive of the end curves so my plan won't sprawl as much, part of the compression will result from using Peco points which are not as long as scale ones which DJ used.

Cheers Andy and Ian.
There's something about signalmen that makes you very helpful people!
Jeff
Thats what we keep telling drivers, but, they don't believe us!!

Hmm, I'd have immediately reported him to Control and submitted a report inquiring what his recent 'working over' record was? Bloke (assuming it's a bloke of course out to be taken off for a few days unless he had a legitimate reason such as the modern equivalent of a 29973 form saying he wasn't permitted in the loop with the train he was working. Incidentally of course traincrew diagrams aren't the reference for which lines they should run over - and never have been.
I did, and they reported him to his own control, eventually he had 4 trains sat at successive signals behind him. he was adamant he wasn't going to move unless I gave him the signal along the main line so i did by rerouting him down the main line, but, only 1 signal section and then ran passenger through the loop around him!

Ian, I'm glad to say that I still wave to the trains that pass the box. Ok they are the same 365's that pass every day, but hay, it makes me feel that I'm in touch with the world!
Andy G
Hi Andy
Even if I waved at the trains the drivers wouldn't see anyway because we have "one way" glass in the panel,
As an aside(and sorry to clog your thread Jeff) I had a strange incident this week, I had a late running freight with a passenger catching it up so I set the road into a loop intending to let the passenger pass the freight, the freight stopped at the entrance signal and the driver came on the phone saying his diagram didn't show his train as being looped so he catagorically refused to go into the loop to let the passenger past.

Ian - looks like you're in for a LOT of snow in south Wales!
Jeff
No Thanks, I'm working 6am Sunday Morning!!!!!
Ian

Hi Ian,
Where in the country are you based, Ian? We have Paul at Kirkby Stephen and Andy in Cambridgeshire as active signalmen amongst the Lunesters.
Jeff
Hi Jeff
Port Talbot in South Wales, Jonathan would have passed the box on his Swansea trip.
Ian
-
Just be sure you don't miss a passing train!
Jeff
Hi Jeff
In the panel box there is a feeling of being remote from the trains so we don't watch them passing anyway.
Ian

Just be sure you don't miss a passing train!
Ian, that list you sent me (and Mike) is really good. It'll save me having to spend a lot of time (doing a much worse job, as I have less reference material) later in the project.
Jeff
Hi Jeff
No problem, sadly I no longer have many of the books mentioned so I am unable to update it, for example, a lot of the 9F's are marked high or low tender because at the time I didn't know there were the 1b and 1f versions of the high!!!!

Hi All
Just spent a pleasant hour during a lull in traffic putting some Lamps, Kaydee Couplings and LMS transfers on 2 Airfix/Hornby Stanier brake vans.

Hi
Quick query, does anyone do the milk tank chassis for the road rail demountable tanks? I believe there are LMS diecast models that are available from Hattons are for the road tanks themselves

Hi all
Many thanks

Hi Jeff & Mike
Well I've finished the S&C loco list, the plan was to do it over a couple of nights this week, but, when I got in to work this evening I discovered that we have engineering work and single line working on tomorrow and all this coming week which means I'm going to be rather busy with present day trains rather than steam ones so I decided to crack on with the list and get it done. It runs to nearly 800 entries although where the locos were regulars over the S&C then they appear in the list several times in different books, However, there are still 449 different locos of which 13 are diesels and what started this whole thing off 10 WD 2-8-0's
If you PM me your email addresses then I will send you a copy when i arise from my slumbers tomorrow(sorry can't send them from work)

If you mean the Ivatt built 46256 & 46257 with Timken roller bearings and altered cab, then no.You may occasionally spot one that someone has adapted on e-bay
Hi Ian
No I didn't mean the Ivatt's, I am going to use the Coet conversion eventually to do 6256, what I meant was the standard(if there was such an engine) Duchess with the round smokebox came in 2 varieties, with a curve in the front footplate joining the bufferbeam to the higher portion or with a gap there like the Ivatts.
Ian

Hi
Thanks for the info, Just one ,more question, Have they done both the split and curved footplate versions of the duchess as well?

Arise Freeman Aberdare. I promote thee from the rank of serf!!
Maybe the book etc thing is an age thing. The series of books I'm finishing at the moment are each around 2" thick and a bit on the heavy side. But they are a pleasure to possess. Must admit I'm impressed with the Kindle though. Being able to download some long-out-of-print sci-fi from the mid-70s was a treat!!
Jeff
Hi Jeff
I'm firmly in the "Kindle" camp, my wife bought it for me 12 months ago and it goes everywhere with me now.
I'm working nights tonight so I'm taking a couple of LMS Brake vans to add transfers and lamps to in the wee small hours, I will also get on with the S&C loco list I promised you.

Thanks Jol, I think the scalelink strips will be brilliant for the edges of the water tower panels. Whether I can solder them on without it looking like I'd poured a litre of mercury over the whole lot is debatable!
Iain
Hi Iain
If you've got access to a Resistance Soldering unit then you can use a thin film of solder paint, I have seen this method used and the solder is virtually invisible.
