  1. Hi

I am aware that Hornby have done models of the streamline Duchess/City and the Normal Duchess, but, have they done a model of the de-streamlined one, the one where the top of the smokebox starts to slope down ahead of the chimney, but, has a normal ssmokebox door?

  2. Hi Lord Lunester and all minor Lunesters

Well, my darling wife is in work, the two boys are in school and the 3 year old is watching Ceebeebies so I got a bit of modelling done.

I altered 6 Peco points for DCC by isolating the Frog and bonding the switch and running rails as well as adding a dropper to the frog for the Hex Juicer, first point took about 40 minutes while the sixth took about 10, but I wish I had 3 hands!!!

Well, you know I've retired, so you probably think I'm ancient. I was 55 in December - so now you know. Like Peter (Western Sunset) implied in an earlier post - I feel much younger, maybe 30...

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff

I am 55 later this year and I have absolutly no chance of retiring for a while yet, its my own fault for having a 3 year old daughter, mind you she makes me run around like a 25 year old so perhaps I've found the secret of eternal youth. I meant to ask a while ago how many other railway signalmen are following this thread then?

  4. Hi all

Spent a frustrating couple of hours yesterday trying to wire the turntable up, can someone explain why a TT that was working perfectly when I took it out a couple of years ago and has been stored in its box, when I wired it yesterday absolutly defied all attempts to make it work and yet when I came in from church and went upstairs I had it revolving under its own power within 5 mins!!!!

Anyway you asked for a photo

  5. Hi Gilbert

There is an easy solution to all this, you could buy the house next door and knock a hole through into the other room and double or even triple your stotage yard area without having to use casettes!!!

P;S You could have foom for a model of New England shed as well.

    Andy g

    Hi Andy

  8. Mike, re. "Historical Railway Modelling"....

Following the "rave" reviews on here I went onto amazon - plenty of copies available in a range of conditions, from about £5 upwards. I've ordered myself a copy and look forward to reading it.

    Jeff

    Hi Mike & Jeff

Just a word of caution there are 2 versions of this book by DJ , the first was entitled "Modelling Historic Railways" and had a blue cover published I think by PSL then it was later revised and David published a revised one under his own Pendragon label with a white cover and a subtle change of title to "Historical Railway Modelling",

  9. Hi Anglian,

No I don't have that book but will look for it on Amazon/Ebay. if I get chance I will look through my oldest Modellers to find any of his articles, I tried to find an index for RM but no success to date, I vaguely remember some of his articles and of course I do have a copy of 'rails in the fells'. He is sadly missed I agree.

Cheers and thanks for your comments.

    Mike

    Hi Mike

Funnily enough I've just been up the attic to fetch my "David Jenkinson" file with all his layouts in, I can do a list of them and either PM you or post it here if you wish. It will be sometime towards the weekend though.

    Ian

  10.

Ian, that's great. Just do whatever is convenient for you - I (and I'm sure Mike as well) don't want to put you to any extra trouble.

    Whenever it's ready - bl**dy marvellous!

    Cheers,

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff(& Mike)

No problem whatever to do this for you, I've had loads of help and encouragement from RMweb so its nice I can do something for someone else, as for the WTT's I enjoy putting timetables together so I would be quite happy to do a listing of trains for each of your stations(Unless it is something you would prefer to do yourselves) from the 1961 WTT, Dent is no problem, but, just remined me which station KL is based on for me to get the times correct

    Ian

P:S Just been reading all of D Jenkinson's articles I fancy Dent Head Jc myself!!!

  11. Hi Mike

I will be happy to send you a copy as well, It will be a few weeks though as I will do it on my next weekend night shift when its quiet and we've put the engineering trains out of the way(I work in a Signalbox), would you both be OK with it on an Excel spreadsheet I can then update it when the need arises? When you are ready I also have photocopies of a 1930's and a 1961 Pass & Frt S&C WTT.

    Ian

  12. I don't think WDs went over the S&C on a regular basis, though I'd like someone to tell me otherwise.

    Hi Jeff

The S&C has always been my first love(railwaywise I should add) ever since growing up with the writings of the late David Jenkinson, so I have loved reading this thread. I used to have quite a number of S&C books until I sold them and a lot of my model railway stuff when we were short of cash in the early years of married life, anyway, to get to the point of this post.

I went through each of the S&C books I had looking at the photos and made a note of the BR number of each loco that was photographed along with things like the type of tender towed by the Jubilees and a couple of other details like 4F's with tender cabs and wrote them out on a long list, which lo and behold I found a week or two ago and it runs to about 15 pages, Next time I'm on nights I am going to type it all up to make a tidy copy and yes there were WD's on the list.

When I get it done would a copy like this be of any use to you?

  13. Going back a couple of posts, there are (or were) also the stunning models of both Oxenholme and Tebay as well.

Tebay was built by the Shipley club abd featured in an early BRM video, I also remember weeing a 4mm model on public display of Berkhampstead station, but, I can't remember whereit was.

  14. Hi folks,

A quick update here from Chez WW - the new railway room has finally been decorated and the carpet is in. Just some curtains needed now and it'll be completely finished. All systems are now go!

A view of the room with pooch providing the scale. She's only 5 months old though, don't forget!

    post-7247-0-90798500-1354115941_thumb.jpg

I expect shifting of the layout into the room will start tonight, as Mrs WW cannot wait to get it out of the house. Not that I'm complaining. It will be good to finally start setting up the layout knowing I won't have to dismantle it again soon.

It's pretty cold here today and I've just turned the radiators on for the first time since the room was insulated and the first signs are encouraging.

More updates to follow soon I hope.

    Cheers

    Dave

She's thinking how nice of Dave to provide me with this nice new heated kennel and all this space to play in as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15.

On a Yard Box diagram from later years the main signal arm is described as 'fixed' and the disc signal was operated by lever no. 31.

    Hi John

The "fixed" main arm could be because according to an early diesel era photo I have shows the connection between the up and downmain and platform 5 had been removed some time towards the end of steam so the main arm would be fixed because the route it refered to was no longer available. Does anyone know when these alterations to the track layout were made?

  16. Sorry Gordon but this has to de dealt with because we have a Settle & Carlisle fan who clearly hasn't read 'Red For Danger' and who also hasn't got a copy of Houghton and Foster http://www.transport...FOSTER_W_Hubert because the former book mentions the story of the Hawes Jcn turntable and the latter illustrates it albeit with the title 'Garsdale Junction'.

The turntable at Hawes Jcn was allegedly apt to suffer from the effects of the strong Pennine winds and although Rolt attributes the provision of a stockade to an engine being caught on the table and spinning round & round unaided I bet the real reason for the sleeper stockade was simply to make the job a lot easier in bad weather. I believe the turntable was taken out of use in the 1950s - it, or rather the stockade, is visible in post war pictures and remnants of the stockade could still be seen in the 1960s. And the turntable is also included on the 40ft plan I have of Hawes Junction.

    Hi all

The station was originally called Hawes Junction then in 1900 was renamed Hawes Junction and Garsdale then renamed just Garsdasle, the Turntable was still in situ when I first visited the S&C in the late 70's, however, it has since been removed and has now been restored at the KWVR.
