Um, do we  maybe want to not advertise the beauty of Alnwick and Northumberland on a site where southerners are reading?

Too late 😀 although I'm technically 500 yards over the border.

Your Dads book needs a reprint, trying to find one is near impossible (apart from paying £30 for a secondhand one) and I'd rather give my money to the NERA.

It’s rather difficult to do that given the whole reason HS2 has been cut back is not for technical / engineering reasons - it’s because A POLITICAN (or rather a certain party) has said it’s too expensive!

You may not like to hear it, but the brutal truth is that politics is (1) the whole reason HS2 got the go ahead in the first place, (2) what kept it going in spite of political opposition from certain quarters and (3) is now why it’s being neutered.

In fact if you don’t want to read about ‘politics’ then I suggest you go and ignore the ‘prototype’ sections of the forum because one thing is for sure, politics is just as much part of the railways as the blood that runs through your heart is to you!

The Politicians passed bills to allow railways to be constructed, defined the regulations which apply to it, set in place the commercial framework it operates under, provide subsidy for loss making elements, fund new infrastructure, decide fares policy….

Whilst HS2 was a decision made by politicians (not POLITICANS) and is, as such a political decision.

I.e. Only phase one built - and with a high chance that it never gets to Euston with the now cleared site sold off to the Tory partys developer mates for expensive flats.

As I said in a previous post, the Tory party as a whole  (and by extension your typical Tory voter) are generally a short termist, money obsessed and selfish lot who have hated HS2 from the beginning.

Are nothing to do with HS2 but are quite obviously your personal political opinion of a large percentage of the population.  It contributes nothing to the thread apart from the threat of locking.

Its a bit 'dodgy' taking the battery out though, there's a sequence of unlocking the driver door disabling the alarm, whipping out the battery then locking the drivers door with the key. Otherwise either the alarm goes mental or my passenger doors are unlocked leaving it unsecured.

A lot of cars have a live terminal separate to the battery terminal so you can attach another feed and keep the car 'live' while you change a battery.

But the stated reason is to catch up on a massive backlog of driver training (caused by themselves, of course)

This is a bit off topic for HS2, but my understanding is the problem stems from Virgin creating a timetable that was based on drivers working overtime and rest day working rather than emptying more, then when the Avanti took over the DFT put a block on them recruiting more drivers which their franchise proposal had be based on.

Very interesting: what's the baking powder doing though, and what's the advantage of this over conventional fillers like Milliput?

I saw this technique about 25 years ago at an aeromodellers event, the superglue and baking powder make up a fast setting filler paste, I've used it a few times...if I can remember where I've put the baking powder...🤔

I believe the blame laid at Simon Kohler's feet. Towards the end of his tenure at Hornby the man became increasingly arrogant. Alienating and clashing with retailers. Major players such as Rail's Of Sheffield and Hatton's took a step back and rightfully so as Hornby had become a money grabbing, ruthless shambles. Only now that Simon Kolher has 'retired'? has some sort of normality returned. Standards have also improved since his departure. Packaging of the most recent releases such as the excellent new 9F and Turbomotive falling in to line with Accurascale, Rapido, Heljan and Bachmann. Those improvements should have happened years ago.

So "you believe" is that actually based on any factual evidence?

The problem with the rest of your post is that it doesn't actually represent the known facts.

  7. I will come to the defence of D9012 having known him since School days (Oh Jeez ,that's 50 years!) as well as being our club Chairman (although I didn't vote for him🤣) and say that he does carry out research for us within club and really appreciates Davids work. Although I will admit that I do ignore his research as it's nothing to do with the GN.  His one saving grace is that he doesn't come from Kempston... although Biggleswade isn't much better..and to compound it he's a Wycombe Wanderers fan.

Over my shoulder Sherrie is saying petrol, flames, fan,  but I've no idea what she's on about..

It's hardly the fault of the club/venue that, even if the venue is well-served by public transport, many of the prospective customer are not as well-served at their starting point.

Good point. My nearest station is 22 miles away. I made a journey yesterday to Grantham from it (Berwick upon Tweed) but it's still a 35 minute car journey to get to BoT.  If I opted for the bus, it's possible, but becomes a 30+ mile and 2 hour journey.

  9. Just passed Plessey on the 06.34 off Berwick upon Tweed. We were crossed over to the the down at Morpeth and then back onto the up just south of the viaduct. The TSR is something like 50 mph.
there is quite a large compound with temporary roadway on the down side with some substantial machinery on site. Knowing the hire cost and haulage of this kit I’d guess the repair will equate to well over 50 years of its maintenance budget.

In the meantime i have started preparing the base for the coach. There will be 14 posts in all, 5 each side and 4 down the middle

Having built quite a few sheds and buildings on legs over the years I would have preferred to put it on metal stilts. I used to get them fabricated by a local engineering company (they were usually a time filler) and were simply a large bottom plate(8" square) with a 4" box section leg and topped with a 6" square plate. We would dig a footing which was not much bigger than a post hole and after squaring the base up bolt them down.

Might sound like a lot of faffing about  but It avoided any rot in pressure treated posts which have lasted barely the 10 year guarantee.

Looking forward to seeing progress, I'm currently arranging the pick up of a railway van for the garden but that's just for lounging in.
