Unfortunately the dyeline print is a plan view rather than elevation and the image quality is poor. All of the buildings have been built using photos either from books or from web sites. None of the buildings are built to scale but rather are built to fit the space on the board however their proportions are correct for each other so taking the building above as an example, I used the plan to work out its size relative to that of the buildings on platform 1 and taking into account that the model platform is narrower than the real thing, I am building it to look right in the space I have. My aim is to have a model that looks right in the space available -

As I said in my post last Wednesday, I have started to build the platform buildings for the Buxton shuttle to run into. You are looking at this side platform 5, with the gents on the left, platform 4 the other side, obviously just the shell at the moment but I have spent time this afternoon drawing up the doors and windows on my silhouette cutter, so they are ready to insert next along with the internal walls. Since this is at the front of the layout and despite having a canopy covering most of it, I intend to detail the interior.- 173 replies

Latest addition to the layout having a test run, the carriages are not correct but since they have been sitting un opened for 15 years I decided it was about time they came out for a run. I intend to build the correct push pull set for the Buxton shuttle but these will do for now. What I haved started to do is build platforms 4&5, so it will at least have somewhere to run to.- 173 replies

Not sure if this is any good to you as it is a copy of a 1915 map far too early really but would give you a idea. I have photographed a small section showing goods shed, most of it would have gone by the 70's.

Hi Adrock The lowest part of the mainline is 970mm of the floor and the highest is 1050mm making the difference 80mm for slope of the line through Monsal Head. Hope this helps. Paul -

Thought I would post the latest progress, not got that much done over the festive period, hopefully get more done as tier 4 gets underway. Anyway as you can see I have started with the base for the scenery and even managed a bit of ballasting, although it needs a bit more tidying before I glue it down. Got several elements of the scene on the work bench, trees, walls etc so will post more when there done. All best for 2021 to everyone. Paul -

So another day to myself, time I thought to get Monsal Head Viaduct complete, or as much as I can manage in 7 hours, stated the day cleaning up the polystyrene, that stuff gets everywhere, then removed the plaster I had spilled on the pillars, note to self take more care next time. So after nearly 2 hours cleaning, I finally got some modelling done, spent 3 hours glueing the cornerstones on the last 2 piers of the viaduct then an hour filling the joints between the Wills sheets, and ta dah, a complete viaduct, so to celebrate I put a coat of undercoat on the whole thing. As a small side project, done whilst allowing layers of cornerstones to set, I completed the first of 4 buffer stops I require, 2 LMS and 2 Midland, all are the excellent Lanarkshire Models kits, which are a joy to build. So altogether an enjoyable day, not sure when I’ll get the next one, still 3 more buffer stops to keep me amused, in the mean time.- 173 replies

Thanks Jonathan, I actually made a card templates for each piece and cut the Wills sheet with a coping saw ,very carefully. It is not finished yet a few bits still to add but it won't be long before I can paint it. -

A couple of weeks ago, I had a free day, my wife was called into work, so not wishing to waste an opportunity I set about some landscaping work around Monsal Head, I first cut up a sheet polystyrene insulation left over from the interior build, I'm a Yorkshire man, we don't like to waste our money you know. I glued it down with a hot glue gun and cut it to shape. What you can't see from the photo is the 3 inches of bits of polystyrene I an wading through took me an hour to hoover it all up! Then I added 2 layers of plaster bandage and left it to dry for a few days. Once it was dry I covered it in a mix of cheap polyfiller from the pound shop and brown acrylic paint. Yesterday I did the same with the other side including the first bit of chicken wire wok on the hill side, next week it will be covered with earth to match.- 173 replies

Hi Jonathan I have spent the last 2 days catching up with your thread, have to say the layout looks superb, hope mine turns out as good as yours. I decided to build my buildings using plastic I love the scalescenes stuff but was concerned about fading and also my layout is in my garage so was also concerned about damp. Your attention to detail is excellent very much my thing, not many people remember drains for downpipes to run into. I am now following so look forward to the next installments. Pandemic permitting we will be running Hartlepool Show in October 2021 hope you can come across. Paul

In lockdown I spent many an hour researching and I came across a dyeline print on the Midland Railway web site showing all of the station area dated 1906. What was particular useful was the notes someone had added in pencil, giving a wealth of information including the signs on the goods shed. So I set about building it from 30thou plasticard. The Silcocks sign was done by Sankey Scenics as a bespoke enlargement from their wagon labels.- 173 replies
