    Bermuda Road MPD

Hi all, After a considerable absence on the forum I thought it was about time I offered an update. Here are a few shots of Bermuda Road showing the progress since the summer. View showing the daily stores train arriving behind a 4F View of the MPD with Jubilee 45629 awaiting its call to duty. Head on view of the MPD with several loco's on shed showing the joint ex:LMS and ex:LNER history The Jinty is removing the Bogie Bolster to allow the stores vans to access the loading dock. The loading dock scene as a Scammel Scarab awaits the arrival of the stores train General view from the rear of the MPD toward the triangle exit routes The industrial nature of the location is shown with a view of the engineering works The layout is progressing well and should soon be available for exhibition, there are a few more scenic points to address before I tackle the loco's and stock and get rid of the 'shiney' look to most of them at present. 45629 is awaiting a replacement tender top in riveted pattern as a priority. This was my very first 'cop' many years ago at Corkerhill MPD in Glasgow, happy days! Will upload a few pictures of the Diesel TMD over the next day or two. Happy new year to all... Cheers Mike

Hi Terry, Thanks for that, keep looking on ebay, I got lucky as this one was even clean and hardly used. The members day looked well attended but perhaps a few formal introductions would have been nice. Your clubrooms are a credit to you and your society, our committee meeting was last night and only 6 attended, we need 7 for a quorum so again no decisions taken. As chairman I will be offering a new slogan for the society this month "OUR DISINTEREST IS FINAL" ! Best wishes and keep up the good work. Mike

Hi Guys, Thinking about the members day on Saturday which I will be attending I thought perhaps a insider view of my modelling den would be in order by way of introduction to new faces, I have also uploaded pictures of my recently constructed spray booth which comprises of some old melamine, a pre-owned cooker hood and some IKEA spotlamps and an extractor fan, the whole ensamble cost under £50! First of all here is a few views of the modelling area with Bermuda Road in the background This is the workshop section Here are a few pic's of the spray booth IKEA spotlights and cooker hood illumination give good coverage Extractor fan expels fumes to outside With that I hope to meet some familiar names at the members day on Saturday. Best wishes Mike

Hi all, Needless to say, been very busy recently but some progress has been made on various sections, hope you enjoy the photo's...... Diesel Depot building now well underway with some detailing done.. Steam Depot, only a few items updated but the loco that started it all is on shed Jubilee; 45629 Straits Settlements. This was my first cop in 1962 at Corkerhill MPD, the rest is history... Daily stores supplies arrives behind a Fowler 4F General views of other sections showing the progress, the factory took quite some time to build and still requires much detailing, the cobble street scene is a little hastily done just to get an idea and may be rebuilt prior to layouts first outing.

Cheers guy's, I have just built a spray booth in order to do a fair bit of weathering as and when I get some time e.g. whilst waiting for the paint, mod-roc or something else to dry or harden. I can't imagine my loco's arriving on shed mostly ex-works as they are, I'll keep posting the updates to show the progress. Cheers, Mike

Hi all, Not a lot to report I'm sorry to say due to work-work-work. Anyway I have done a bit on the TMD area, the board has been added to the main sections which will now show the full set-up. A little more detailing has been started on the the TMD itself and the retaining walls carried around to the tunnel mouth which will disguise the fiddle yard. Still plenty to do ............
  7. Hi, Superb detail, two questions if I may: Are the components machine cut from the CAD program? What adhesive / solvent do you use Cheers Mike

Thanks for that, I'll try to do your expectations justice. Can you try and fit me in a extra day or two in the week as I can't get the time to do much at present. Work keeps getting in the way ! Cheers mike

Hi chris, I feel the same way, I like to see some curvature or off square sidings etc, if its too regimental it reminds me of my train set which was altered time after time but still looked straight in the end, How can I possibly remember my train set from 50 years ago and not remember what I'm doing when I'm doing it.......... Now what's next Cheers mike
  10. Hi Guy's Absolutely cracking layout. I have seen it a dozen or so times at exhibitions and it never fails to impress. Keep up the good work. Mike

Hi Guy's Here are some updates on the other work done, firstly on the TMD section, you may have noticed the two sections are separate, this is due to my having to clamber underneath the boards if they were bolted together. General view of entrance From opposite side 'Clayton' as per normal receiving attention Depot interior taking shape with introduction of 'flight deck' maintenance structures 'Western' receiving attention - lost buffer. This give the depot scope to handle loco's from the length and breadth of the UK! Another view showing inside improvements The bridge is also looking pretty good... A bit of weathering is in order next. That's about it for the moment, I hope to concentrate on the TMD area next. Cheers Mike.

Hi guys, Well I've had a busy few weeks but I've managed to do a bit more on the project. Following advice from fellow RMWeb members regarding CASTING items has provided me with a new skill!. I now have a pretty convincing retaining wall which needless to say still needs completing but here's few photo's to be going on with. Looking toward arrival roads Looking from the MPD Looking toward fiddle yard Looking from depot roads looking from the depot roads Looking toward the MPD The coaling stage & exit route Arrival from fiddle yard I will post some progress done on the TMD later in the week guys, footie's on in minute. Happy new year to you all. Mike

Hi Ian, Philosophy creeping in there! I'm glad it worked for you as I have only begun to use it myself having got a small supply of offcuts from a printer last year but its definately easier to work with than some of the old methods. cheers mike

Hi Kris, Checked on the glue problem and all seems fine, nothing falling off or loose. It may be difference in the brand perhaps, you did have me worried - did'nt sleep a wink Sunday night! cheers mike

Yes Ian, foamboard it is with polystyrene supports then clad in various sheets, kept the roadway in timber simply because it was there.

Good question Kris! No I used it without giving it a thought, however the detailing blocks etc. have been additionally fixed with Mek-Pac so here's hoping. To be honest I use this at work and it seems to hold anything you dont want it to so with the depressions in the 7mm stone it seemed a good idea at the time. Mike.

General materials used Wills 'Plate Girger Bridge' parts Setting in the Wills Dressed Stone sheets with 'No-Nails' type fixing Adding the detail corner sections cut from Slaters 7mm Dressed Stone sheet Build-up complete General views with bridge in position, as I say still a few bits to complete and painting to do. Cracking idea! The guy sneaking round the back would be me! I was looking through the ScR MPD book by Paul Bolger yesterday and the picture of Eastfield with the depot foreman's building on the approach ramp came instantly to memory, the chastisements uttered from the man clad in brown dustcoat and trilby would no doubt have him up in court in today's PC climate. Naturally I can't repeat any of his torrent! - Happy days. cheers mike.

Hi Paul, They are Wills Materials sheets, come in packs of 4 approx 80mm x 120mm and thick enough to use without building up with plasticard first, cost just under £3 per pack. Been building a road overbridge today, will be posting pic's later. Cheers Mike

Hi again, As Promised here are a few shots of the buildings under construction. MPD North Light Shed is plywood based and TMD shed is Perspex and Wills sheets. Regards, Mike
  24. Hi, Well that brought back a few memories of Toton in BR blue days. I worked there as a fitter in the 70's. Its sad to see it now as its near enogh a dumping ground for stored loco's and most of the yard lines uplifted. Its up to us modellers to show the future generations how the railways used to run because there's not much left of the real thing - is there! rant over. You sound as though you have sizeable space for the intended layout and the bridge looks pretty good too. Mike

Sorry, I have been scratchbuilding some of the buildings over the past few months and others are originals I built for my other layout (Milne - see gallery and Model Rail 121) this layout is in storage whilst work is underway on the above. Engine shed was built about 17 years ago with plywood walls and timber roofing beams, roof detail in plasticard, whole building clad in Superquick brick papers, I hope to re-clad in plasticard before taking to an exhibition. Coaling stage is ply again but with plasticard over, tank is very thick card moulded to shape, I made this for our club layout which has been dismantled so I retrieved it. Diesel Depot is new and as yet unfinished, main structure is Perspex with Wills sheet cladding, this will have a fully detailed interior when finished. Fuel point is a Knightwing kit Fuel tanks are Knightwing parts and general mix of scratchbuilding materials to hopefully achieve an accurate portrayal of the correct fuel storage system used on BR - which is worked on a rotational basis where: Tank 1 is diesel for dispensing. Tank 2 is diesel settling to expel air bubbles Tank 3 is two fold A: Diesel drained from loco's entering depot for more than an 'A exam' to reduce fire risk (this operation causes the air bubbles and B: General refill from wagonload etc. The tanks are rotated as tank B settles it becomes tank A etc etc. I will take some detail pictures in future. Cheers Mike.
