  1. Do I not recall that Trix produced UK models to a really unhelpful hybrid scale of 3.8mm: 1 foot? If so, the claims here are a bit misleading.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-Trix-Liliput-00-Gauge-Cl-81-UNPAINTED-BODY-MINT-CONDITION-Not-Hornby-/321118265978?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item4ac423e27a

As noted elsewhere, the AL1 was actually made to 4mm scale. This guy originally listed these as Triang, I messaged him to advise that they were Trix/Liliput bodies.

  2. Not eBay but an extreme example of wishful pricing,

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Approach-Model-Railway-Layout-Design/dp/0906867851/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366829467&sr=1-6

OK it's out of print but £1500! :O Will it ever sell?

I've noticed that there's quite a bit of 'kite flying' on amazon from business sellers that list thousands of out of print books a daft prices, presumably on the basis that once in a while some daft or desperate person actually pays. Of course, this one could be a typo....

  3. For a model that was thought to be rare as hen's teeth before release, the fact that there are at least 12 adverts on ebay tonight suggests there is still a plentiful supply about. Interestingly, though, none of them appears to be DCC-fitted.

Indeed it could be said that the quantity was about right to ensure a steady sell out without significant discount - in some ways surely what Hornby would want?

  4. Yes, it is stretching things a bit, but he does sell a lot of renumbered Maunsells etc, however sadly not in olive livery. There isn't really a definition for "removed from box, rehashed but not run", which is what he does, I think. He is - or at least was when I was - a member of SEmG.

Indeed, ebay's 'pre-filled' options don't really cater for the likes of models. It's a bit like packaging which lets you select from 'sealed' or 'loose' - there seems to be no concept of an opened item that may still have its box.

  5. The Harow Model Shop with the very knowledgeable old chap behind the counter.  Seemed a bit haphazardly organised but there wasn't much they didn't have and only five minutes walk from either of the two Tube stations.

Ah yes, the Harrow Model Shop. Loads of stuff, dusty corners, years old items turning up on the shelves....! The knowledgeable chap on the railway counter would have been Norman. Wore a white coat when serving. Didn't have much time for the newfangled plastic trains, he was an HD/Wrenn afficianado - I believe he ran or at least partook in a local model railway club that ran 3-rail stuff with full signalling (including bell signals between operators). I quickly realised that he was the one to get served by because the other railway counter staff member was 'Arthur' (who wore a brown coat) and was the most miserable guy ever. He was well past pensionable age and his sales patter seemed to consist of phrases like 'I don't know what you want that for'; 'I wouldn't bother with that' etc.

The shop moved to North Harrow about 8 years ago and then fairly quickly shut down (although Arthur may still be rattling his chains and wandering the corridors). All I could ever glean was that the son of the original owner had taken it over and got into difficulties but it was sad to see such a major part of my youth disappear.

  6. "ONE FOR THE SERIOUS TRI-ANG COLLECTOR" Well he got that bit right: they'd be the only ones daft enough to pay for it!  :jester:

The irony is that it isn't even the final version so certainly isn't one for the 'serious' collector...

  7. Fair play it is a nice livery too!

I don't buy coaches that often and still fondly remember the days I started in the hobby as a kid with pocket money and a coach was about £12 from Gamleys!

Yup, when I started Hornby Mk3s were £4.75 at RRP - but then again they were underlength by a scale 11 ft and missing a window each side!

  8. The description says "Hand Weathered". That would be right....and the paint is probably still on his fingers !!

Or in his fingers, assuming he has bled all over the item in question  :O

  9. I'm watching this at the moment -

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230943571121?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Hornby Intercity Swallow Mk3 currently at £46 (with 30mins still to go) - I was originally on the lookout for some cheapy Mk3s to respray for my next HST project and bowled over when I saw what the bidding has reached haha!

These keen bidders - Ricky Gervais' 'Extras' catchphrase comes to mind - are you having a laugh?!

Excellent news for the seller though, wish it was me! Tempting to cash in on these BREL junkies and shed a few of my coaches!

I'm afraid that's been the going rate (especially for the SOs) for some time - it isn't  one off or a fluke. The last batches of Hornby Intercity Mk3 SOs (R4295 and R4295A) sold out very quickly, another case of demand rather being underestimated.....

  10. As Swallow arrived in 1987 you'll find that all the RFB conversions (and the similar RLO Lounge Cars) wore swallow from the outset.

Good opportunity for Bachmann to have a complete (and correct) Virgin rake. I'm amazed they haven't gone for these as well.

As with all modern liveries, the Virgin one has to be licensed and I expect the necessary hurdles have not yet been overcome - they may not be keen on anything that is not Pendolino or Voyager.

  11. If it has been out of the box it is not mint.

So if you go into a model shop, ask to examine a new loco and the shopkeeper gets it out of the box, you admire it but do not buy, he presumably now has to put it in the secondhand cabinet....?

  12. Not exactly madness but something that really annoys me.  'Last time I used it, it was ok'.   So when was the last time you used it?  I did think about asking him, as I need another Airfix Class chassis, but do I think I'll get a straight answer?  At 99p it's worth a punt but doubt it'll stay that price.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Airfix-00-gauge-Train-D5531-/181091721619?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item2a29e86193

Oh and while I'm ranting, another thing that annoys me is when thay say 'it's been in the loft and could do with a good clean' - so why didn't they clean if before listing?

I agree that it seems daft to list stuff this way. On the other hand it gives me the opportunity to take a chance on stuff that will sell for less than if the seller could be bothered to do these things. Let's face it, there's not a huge amount to go wrong with an Airfix 31 so I would bet that it either works or any hesitation will be sorted with a quick dis-assembly and clean. So - daft for the seller - but great for us, eh? I'd rather this than the Cartmel/Gostude 'you are buying a rare and collectable [insert name of common or garden item]....' with a three figure price tag :sungum: .

  13. Mk.2d &e coaches had an air-conditioning system that was, effectively, added to the earlier pressure ventilation system. The Mk.2f coaches had a redesigned system that was simpler and more reliable and meant fewer boxes underneath; also slightly different vents on the roof. Most Mk.2fs had Mk.3 style seats (orange First and light blue Second), though some TSOs were fitted with the Mk.2 type (dark blue). Mk.2d coaches had the large toilets like Mk.2b & 2c coaches, Mk.2e & f had smaller toilets. Externally this only made a difference on the TSO where the toilet windows were either both on the same side for Mk.2d or diagonally opposite corners on Mk.2e & 2f. Blue/grey coaches probably would still have their original interior colours. Folding gangway doors in the corridor connections were orange/red on Mk.2d and cream on Mk.2e & 2f.

The only thing I would add is that Mk2ds had wood panelled decor whilst Mk2e/f moved to (generally white or off-white) formica. The Mk2d variant also included first class vehicles with compartments as well as some with open saloons. Mk2e/f were all open saloons.

  14. Hi Andy no I don't want to meet you in your day job and I will totally respect your right to ask the question ,I just felt your wording was harsh as Dapol are not the only company guilty of this over the years. I await Daves response with interest.

    Cheers

    Mark

I agree. Quite frankly the fact that anyone would contemplate an RTR Class 21/29 has for me been a pleasant surprise. I cannot believe that the fact the Dapol have announced one and have deferred it has resulted in the moaning (yes, I'll say it straight out) that has appeared here. Of course if someone else gets there first we all have the 'right' to buy that one instead but for God's sake don't bang on like it's some sort of dark threat, or that your quality of life has been compromised because of the thwarted promise of this model. for my part, I wish Dapol well, and hope that they can eventually produce this model, but if not I'll live.

  15. What a welcome antidote to the "design rubbish" idea that's coming from certain other quarters.

    What, like the 2-BIL?

I say let's enjoy this superb looking model on its own merits without knocking others!

  16. "Simply stunning" - yep, in the sense that anyone operating it would be rendered blind by the WW2 searchlight attached to the front.

If you think that's bad have a look at Cartmel's attempt to both present something as 'mint' and 'enhanced'. The finest untouched mint boxed R357 you could ever find wouldn't make £145 so why turning the front into a glorified Christmas tree would help is anyone's guess

  17. I posted this earlier in the thread, but remember that 32-475DC Split Headcode blue 40 was actually announced in 2007. OK since then they decided to retool etc etc but I think after 6 years another six months is neither here nor there!

PS back then I preordered from my local retailer but given that since then the owner has retired and passed the business on I suspect the 2007 price won't be honoured

  18. Then the answer is yes. But for the life of me,I can't think which ones have the gap

I think it was (4)6230/1/2/3/4/5 only (Buccleuch/Atholl/Montrose/Sutherland/Abercorn) that didn't have the gap. The later unstreamlined ones (4)6349 on were built with the split running plate

  19. This and another moulding formed the staple for Hornby's 'Closed Van' offerings in the 1970s and 80s. Like wise the chassis were standard items - the picture shows the chassis in use from around 1977 until the mid 1980s; there was a later version with more underframe detail and and an earlier version with separate metal couplings. I used to hate them but found once I reached my 40s that I acquired a rake made up of different liveries - KitKat, Weetabix, Smiths Crisps etc - for some fun workings on what is very much a BR Blue era based project!

  20. Its really up to the buyer .I bought a new Fuji F30 -F31 cameras in a new years sale .I knew they were sought after so stuck it on ebay at well over three times its price .It sold within a few minutes of listing .I went back and bought the other two they had in stock .Sold one and kept one .Nice little earner .I even put the original receipts in as to keep them in warrenty .Customers were very happy .We have no right to object at anyone making a bob or two from ebay .Its the customers choice whether they buy not the sellers duty to make no profit .I have an unopened green livery C thats getting tempting .It could go towards a new guitar amp I actually need.I expect the dealer selling them is putting some of his profit to paying taxes and other expenses that he actually needs to do .No-one actually needs a little green engine however cute but a lot need money so let the wheels of business keep on turning .

I have to say I quite agree, Whether it's been confirmed or not, I am sure that in due course another SECR version will be produced. Remember the RTC Class 24? Bachmann did an LE run a few years back that quickly sold at premium. A coupe of years back they did another run for Modelzone. That now sells for a premium but did let some of us fill the gap at the time. Model railways are a relatively specialist item and given that all items are never going to be continuously in production, there will always be some items not currently made which can be sold privately (or even by shops with old stock) at whatever price the market will bear.

Interestingly enough, whilst the SECR Wainwright sold out quickly, t didn't disappear instantly from the shops - Holborn Modelzone had them for at least a week. I think part of the problem may have been that if you missed the discounter's stock, paying full RRP (£94.50 in this case) may have stuck in the craw on principle - except that as we have seen, in this case, full RRP was in fact a very reasonable price to pay. Indeed, I suspect Hattons, Rails etc would all agree that discounting (which they do as a commercial business to drive volume) was, in the case of this product, entirely unnecessary to shift their stock!

  21. I've seen this in a couple of shops too. I can only assume that after a while Bachmann dispose of slow-selling stock in this way.

Yes, I remember quantities of the heavily weathered BR blue class 08 being sold off in this way some years back
