  1. Three of Dad's from the early 60s, taken while we were sailing. Sorry about the quality, they were not looked after quite as well as his railway photos. 4. I quite often go down to the harbour where I can park on the quayside to look at ships. The Arklow ships are carrying alumina which then goes by rail to Fort William. We also see a lot of support ships. Other cargo ships come and go. 5. I've had another look at Dad's notes, he has written it as "might be" 31109 so you are probably correct. Many thanks, David
  6. Thanks for identifying the working for J2770. As for J3999, which I also wonder as to whether it was from Skegness, I think it was taken in the late morning as the sun is just on the far side of the line which at Swayfield runs roughly NNW to SSE so the sun crosses the line before noon. David
  7. Mike and Paul, Thanks very much for the information, I've altered the captions. David
  8. East Coast Main line again today, with yet more photos from Swayfield - and I think I probably have around 200 more photos taken at Swayfield over the years yet to be posted here. 10. I spent a lot of time watching Saltdean this weekend at Railex North East and was very impressed. A lovely layout - and pre-groupimg too - perfect. David
  11. It is the same Maldon. Maldon is also a good place to see Thames sailing barges - one is visible in the distance in C1966. By the way, it's interesting to look at the present day views of the places on Google Earth David
  12. Today's photos show the remains of railways once owned by the GER or making connections with the GER. 14. I think there may be some more, but I haven't come across them yet - both Dad and I only got there if either of us had a holiday in Scotland. David
  15. Scotland today. We are at Elvanfoo t Bodsbury level crossing on the WCML north of Beattock Summit today. There was an "open it yourself" crossing there at the time, with very clear instructions on how to use it. If you click on the second photo to enlarge it you will be able to read the instructions. This was at the time when pairs of Class 50s were working on the line. 18. Sometimes the Nunthorpe workings went as far as Carlisle, on a regular basis. David
  19. There was indeed. 9F 92220 Evening Star. I have photos of the specials as well as a lot more of Hexham taken at the time. One day they will appear here. David
  20. I went late this morning and was able to park at the venue. A very enjoyable exhibition with good layouts, I think I saw trains move on all of them. I managed to find things to buy, everything on my shopping list and a bit more. A big "Well done" to the organisers from me. David
  21. A few photos taken around Hexham goods yard in 1984 and 1985. The March 1985 photos were taken during a BR event with a display of locos to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the line from Blaydon to Hexham. 23. A little bit later than usual as Mum's stair lift, which she ordered on Wednesday, was installed this afternoon and I was needed to "supervise" for her. We start today with a view looking west to the old GNR/LNWR station at Nottingham London Road and then travel along the Midland line towards Loughborough. 24. I can remember the bridge in the late 1950s when we sometimes went that way in my grandparents' car. Even then there could be queues - of course then the bridge had only the single carriageway as the railway was still open. Sadly we never stopped there to look at the trains.
  25. I don't have any details of it, but it was heading south towards the Gotthard so I think it was probably going to Italy. David
