  1. Further to your question about the vaccum operated regulator these are my thoughts based on the type of regulator fitted - I do not know 100%

The 1Ps were fitted with a vertical regulator so as the regulator was moved a lever moved upwards or downwards depending on if opened or closed to open an intital pilot valve and then the main steam valve. On a normal engine the main steam valve then allowed steam through to the cylinders.

Looking now at the vacuum operated ones the apparatus was on the side of the smokebox in line with were the main steam pipes split to go to the two cylinders. Therefore it would look likley that the vacuum moves the lever you talk about up and down to open and close a smaller valve. inside the smokebox on the main steam pipe.

Thinking about how stiff a 3f regulator is to move (the nearest i have experienced) a vaccum operated system would need more of a lever effect to move the acutal regulator handle. Therefore I would suggest that the process would be a signal from the driving cab to signal to the fireman to open the regulator/ close the regulator with the vaccum controlled appuratus giving the fine control the driver wanted.

Moving onto your build its very nice, if you want a photo of the engine in LMS livery I might have one in my neg collection. will check for you.

  2. According to the official painting spec, BR standard locos were painted black inside the frames, not red as most people believe - based on preserved locos?

    Regards,

    Dave.

Corr it would be black as the ace of spades inside the frames if they were black (i dont know what they were as i was not around) , at least with red it reflects the light, or at least does till the build up of oil and ash means its more like grey.

    regards

    Duncan

  3. I'd like to see your chassis sometime if you can find it. The PCB material is a bit left field and if it don't work out I'll end up just using some brass sheet, but hey, I've got loads lying around so it's worth a go ....

If you think your drawings were lacking, see my chassis "comic" a few posts back, fag packet sketch does not cover it laugh.gif laugh.gif

I will see if i can find the part built engine over the weekend and post some images

  4. wow, etched frames, mine are going to be hacked carefully crafted out of PCB material - I've got this mad idea for a split chassis arrangement with pickups soldered direct to the frames behind the wheels ......

Guess why I'm spending so much time faffing with the tender laugh.gif laugh.gif

Being my first ever etched effort the drawing was not very good, Grainge and Hodder were very patient with me. I learnt very quickly that everything has got to be perfect to run. I will see if i can find the part built frames and show you how they look (if i can find them in the garage having just moved)

These split frames look hard work, so I will watch how you do it with keen interest and then maybe have a go.

  5. Mine will be mixed traffic lined black, which should look nice and unusual on a Britannia body laugh.gif It will also be named "R. A. RIDDLES" the plates alone for this project will cost in excess of £20 blink.gif

look forward to seeing it, i too went for the Hornby brit body. My main problem was the etch for the frames was the first i ever did and getting it to run was a real pain. The third which is only part built has a revised chassis, and etched body which is part built.
