  5. Lazy Summer's day at the lineside just North of Leighton Buzzard when the WCML was a true electric railway with 81-87 on virtully everything which is why BR put the wires up. 8. Recently found some long lost Triang-Hornby? BOC liquid oxygen white model bogie tanks. I have a few memories of a class 81/85 roaring along the WCML with the Widnes - Wembley BOC tanks in tow and a flow from Ipswich before their demise but little else. Any more of those distinctive BOC white tank memories, sadly assume all history now cheers NR www.leightonlogs.org

They must have visited some long lost branches too, found this in an old mag this morning 5129 Coal from Barony Colliery, East Ayrshire to Falkland Yard 160971 Must be a good few long lost haunts the babies visited both in and away from the Highlands??? 12. Small and medium size oil terminals were once common place across the country. Trains of 45T, 100T often a mixture of the two, delivered oil/bitumen or whatever in often filthy short rakes on a regular, daily, weekly or monthly basis from the Stanlow/Fawley's/Grangemouths/Ripple Lanes of this world. Small receiving Oil terminals are often modelled but most are now history on the big railway. Be intrigued if readers can remember any long lost ones, the traffic flows etc...At least Lairg on the far North survives, but 100's must have gone a few starters...Thame regular oil from Ripple Lane, often 33 hauled, sole branch traffic? Buncrewe (nr Inverness) a classic rural oil depot, "Highland baby sulzer" served! Dunstable served by Ripple Lane, last traffic on the branch, ceased 1990 Aberystwyth - Stanlow served...25's Larger oil depots serving airports were Langley (LHR) and Salfords (LGW) loads of traffic there!! Any readers know any more, there must be a good few 100 more long lost ones thanks NR www.leightonlogs.org
  13. Have distant memories of several early 70's Inverness 26's/"teacups" in green livery but with blue cab doors, 5333 noted as such, be nice to see a phot of this livery variation. Possibly blue 24's had green doors too! NR www.leightonlogs.org
  14. mighty fine gen on such an largely ignored sub class in the mags of the time .. The 24 was not logged on other days so must have returned to her old home! 24069 was at inverness on 0746 ex Perth on 310176, and 24107 was at Pitlochry paired up with 40063 on freight on 040276. Also returning from Kyle on 020276 i noted 25109 on cements at the new Strome Ferry cement terminal, a "rat on tour! happy days NR www.leightonlogs.org
  15. Fascinating gen above, Six Bells Jn for March 25th 1967 has details of a "Grand Scottish tour" which included the Waverly route and a trio on load 18 Aviemore - Perth with the long lost 5122/5070/5127 as the power...Must have sounded good over Drumochter. In the late 70's the "skinhead" Scottish baby Sulzers did a fair bit of highland action too.. cheers NR www.leightonlogs.org
  16. To add to the superb 26th February 1977 memories so far, few from the Swansea end that day... Western Tribute , Saturday 26th February 1977 The Memories The day dawned bright and sunny, very rare in my 3 years as a Swansea student being more regularly monsooned upon! on the long walk to Swansea High St, East Dock and Landore depot. Arriving at High St around 1100 there was already a small group of enthusiasts awaiting the tour. The word was “right time†and was “a pairâ€. A few 47’s came and went including visiting 47012, plus a few “flying bananasâ€(HST’s) . Then bedlam as 1023 and 1013 arrived with the tour, with the biggest headboard I’d ever seen. I had arranged to meet a Luton based mate during the tour run round but it was chaos, enthusiasts everywhere, up lampposts, signal posts, the track and everywhere else! The mood was celebratory almost, no time to dwell on the last “Whizzo’s†in South Wales or even “BRâ€, just get the phots and memories in! About an hour later the tour departed for the South West and finally Paddington, Swansea High Street returned to quiet Saturday afternoon normality. After 47483 arrived on the 1015 “Padd†I wandered up Prince of Wales Road to Landore depot. About 25 locos were on , the usual stuff mind, and all was a bit subdued after the earlier fun during the tour run round. Returning home from the depot, I stopped at Hafod Bridge, a small footbridge over the lines into High St, a bit North of the station. A snarling, growling, smoking, hooting 37236 on a passing parcels soon restored my faith, no more “Whizzosâ€, but plenty “syphons†to enjoy!!! 22. Well at least three of us at Derby on that grey day in 1972, 177 was my very last peak for sight still remember her now proudly standing outside the works. A lot of the Cabbed © entries at the end of the Derby Works lists need added detail in that they were spare? cabs only so easy to cab! We also ventured towards Etches Park but were soon hossed by BTP happy days! 26/8/72Luton 42 1C04,124H 1E41,5243 Bedford 3859,4139 Wellinboro 3864,3863,35 Kettering 5277,57 Leicester 3862,50161/59000/50061/55004,10,102,5233,1989,73H,43,1860,38,59531,118,5243,130,3776,3866,5235,85, Derby 1769,59650/51175/51638,1960,7639,5270,7615,8047,8072,3771,3351,3186,3572,3569,3792,2130,3577,50447/59151/50496,98,177(last peak),5567,95,56003/50035,2387,33,3082,21,5241,27,7615,50734/59256/50655, 1942,50446/50498/59165,5282,5232,91,5570,50669/5927/50744/50742/59267/50680,104,50655/59256/50734 8156,18,151,6869,1755,50656/59300/50741,169,50498/50446/59165,67,5618,160,47,5626 Derby Works (open day) 7506,3570,APT,5072,5258,8180,7537,5027,5257,7513,5064,5162,7547,144,4,178,153,127,147,192,93,3840, 3052,3764,3530,3914,148,3773,39,34,115,7639,5270,7617,7534,5294,7506,100,5021,7636,64,5013,76,1635, 185,82,7,3779,2386C,50692,3910,50725,59258,50688,50743,59293,50654,50719,51144,59441,50692,59301, 50697,50644,50685,59263,50696,50709,2381,2388,41001,41002,7647,7536,S15705,14,5029,5031C,5165C, 5306C,7634C,5064C,147C,5013C,7547,5004C,5187C Derby 1727,50496/59157/,8197,50447/50697/59301/50962,58,117,139,110,14,1583,1588,133,50676/59290/50676,5281,5276,5618,50744,6750,7610,101,26,1579,1738,50718/59297/50678,56,173,109,1732,22,5234,63,5279, 50669/59274,79,5280,5236,68,90H,3351,50794/50757/50974/51174,5250,5242. 25. The “Thames Clyde Express†was a famous named train on the Midland main line in the 70’s. Coded 1S68 it linked St Pancras with Leicester, Sheffield, Leeds, Carlisle and Glasgow. At the Luton end it was nearly always class 45/46 hauled, but a good variety of diesel and electric power must have also featured? on the journey North. Believe it stopped running in the early 80’s but no dates. A sample sighting from 20th November 1972 at Luton, 150 worked 1S68 from SP Any Thames Clyde Express memories to share out there?. many thanks, NR, www.leightonlogs.org
