  1. Hiya Pete, The wagon behind the 31 is my attempt at a Sturgeon a wagon that used to be around a lot (probably all scrapped long ago)the model based on a Hornby Freightliner flat, with Appleby Bogies and stuff from the scrap bin. 7APT7 wrote:- "Your DRS 37 510 photo, is that the ne Bachmann Nuclear flask wagon or one you have made yourself... Excellent work as always Kevin... Love to come to this thead to see all your excellent photos. Regards Jamie Many thanks Jamie, the Flask wagon is an Appleby Kit that has not been available for a long time -- But the good news is the Bachmann one will soon be available And Jamie our next exhibition is in October at Folkestone, another Class 31 a standard Lima one this time. See you soon Kevin.
  2. Yes Scott, inspired by layout threads like Redbridge Maritime and Warren Lane and especially the new Hornby KFA I decided that I to had too have some of this container action, what I eventually am going to do is look at some of the side door 20' containers as used on military stuff, Ideal for the KFA and Leaford. Anyway as requested a picture of the loader (bought second hand and already giving trouble ) and an overall picture of the yard, the lorry not finished so no pictures yet!!! Kevin
  3. Visitors to Leaford. A couple of Pitbulls locos ready for our play day at Exford on Friday. DRS 37 510 arrives on a Flask Train. "Rebecca" theres a name in the news at the moment (different spelling) 47 727 catches the sun. Earlier on in this thread I stated I would like a banger blue class 31, well I have been working on an old Lima one thats been in the loft for a number of years, now it is running on a new Hornby chassis, there is just summat about the Lima 31. Cheers for now. Kevin.
  4. Hi guys, as I just have become the proud owner of some of Hornbys new KFAs, if you are undecided about them I thought I would share some pictures of them with you that perhaps will help you make up your mind. Loaded with Bachmann 20'Containers. Kadee couplings No 18 fitted can easily cope with 24" radius corners on Leaford without buffer lock. I hope this is of help for some. Many thanks to Hornby for producing a fantastic wagon . Regards. Kevin.
  5. Good gracious John you have succeeded at making me feel very old 1990 seems a very long time ago, anyway please see above a photo of your beautiful Grainflow polybulks waiting for unloading in Leaford Yard my thanks to you for the loan of them. What a weekend again I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed myself and my thanks must go to John Dedman, Ray Clarridge and all the other members of the New Forest Model Railway Society for the invite and hopitality over the weekend (the sausages in a roll deserve a special mention), the Leaford On The Road Crew had expanded somewhat for this exhibition with my thanks due to Nigels Dad, Uncle and Mervyn for the Friday unload and setup, KIMITRAINS (Jaeson), PaulRHB (thanks as well for the pocket size Macro Route Guide), and of course the usual suspects Pitbull (Scott) and Temeraire (Ian) for doing things as neccessary, as well as driving trains, to keep Leaford running and then back to its home safely. My scincere thanks to all. Looking forward to the next one. Kevin.

  7. P.C.M. wrote Hi kevin, Hope you enjoy the Brockenhurst show, it's my old club I went there for years right up until I left for Oz . I still keep in touch with a few members, mainly John Dedman. Llanbourne actually did it's only ever Exhibition at Brockenhurst though it has changed a bit since then. Cheers Peter Hello Pete, I am sure that we will enjoy the Brockenhurst Show, I am wondering whether there are any pictures of Llanbourne at Brockenhurst it would be good to compare i.e. then and now, This will not be my first time at this show either, previously taking Leaway Park back in the mid 90's I think - perhaps we were both there!! To Marcyg, I to have had larger roundy, roundy layouts in the past but operationally they can be a bit dull, Great if you like watching trains go by, smaller end to end layouts need more thought as to how get maximum fun and therefore be more stimulating for the operator. Hi ess1uk, I will certainly watch with interest? Hello Matthew (Mattmeister) I am glad that you enjoyed the Wilton Show, Most of the Lorries (Tractor Units and Trailers) were manufactured by KeilCraft originaly but now are available from Knightwing (it would appear in limited supply). Other Tractor Units were available from Nigel at M.S.I.M a few years ago mainly Volvo and Mercedes, sadly no longer available The Warwell and Warflats are Genesis Kits and the Scorpions (and Scimiters)are Airfix To PaulRhB, I will give you a buz later, and you are welcome to bring along your new acquisitions but it would appear that I will have to extend Leaford First. Kevin
  8. Well, perhaps you could suggest that you are going to re-decorate your dining room, and she should not go in whilst the work is going on because you want it to be a suprise, sneak the layout in and then suggest you are just looking after it for a mate No! ok perhaps not. Kevin.
  9. P.C.M said "Your locos look at home on Kevs layout, suprised he let you take them home. 33008 has always been one of my favourite Cromptons it looks great sat on that departmental train" Your right Pete, they are gorgeous are'nt they my favourites "The Burma Star" and "Illustrious" I nearly put them into the wrong stock box (accidently mind) whilst packing away. "Couldn't resist a pic of the real thing hope you don't mind Kevin" Your pictures are always welcome Pete, thanks for posting them. Again a fantastic weekend at Wilton. Good show, Good layouts, Good company, Good fun, lots of friends both old and new and lots of chat. My thanks as ever to the organisers, and the Leaford Crew (particularly for the photos, ok even for ugly betty). Marcyg wrote "Wow, this layout has so much depth I didn't realise how compact it was till this photo turned up. Stunning layout" My thanks for your kind comments, A picky below to explain the reason for it's compact size Leaford in its natural environment my dining Room. (Special thanks to the Misses ) ess1uk. perhaps you could try for your dining room perhaps a nice meal at a local hostelry maybe a bottle of wine or two or three!!! The New Forest Exhibition (Brockenhurst) is next needless to say I am looking forward to it. Which reminds me, to PaulRhB, How's Canada Paul? I hope you are having a good time, I wonder can you do the Sunday for me at Brockenhurst please? My best regards. Kevin
  10. Yes the 4 CIG calibrated and ready to plod back and forth, I am also looking forward to another good weekend, see you both then. Kevin
  11. Just a reminder of the Wilton (Salisbury) Exhibition this coming weekend at Michael Herbert Hall, South Street, Wilton, Salisbury, SP2 0JS, Open Saturday 10.30am to 4.30pm and Sunday 10.00am to 4.00pm, we will be there with Leaford hopefully we will see you there. 4 Cig unit 1245 arrives at Leaford with a service from Brighton. Class 205 waits for the platform road to form a service to Salisbury. Kevin.
  12. Hi Wummyock, The Acid Tanks were aquired from a friend who had a friend who had constructed them from all sorts of bits and pieces, on inspection I can see Airfix, Hornby and Bachmann bits as well as Appleby kits and parts. Anyway see what you think. Hi Mark, its great when a model can stir up fond old memories, good luck with the jump but as to why somebody would want to jump of a perfectly servicable bridge is beyond me, needs must I suppose To srh474, Ian, Leaford is not for sale at present, and I do not know any layouts that are perhaps Ebay could be a possibility sorry I cant help. Cheerio for now. Kevin
  13. Hello chaps, Richard60098. Hi Rich the Powyll Duffryn Wagons are indeed scratch built but sadly not by me so I cannot comment to much about them, the bogies would appear to be made from partly Cambrian bits and pieces blended with plasticard to make the correct profile and extremely good they are too, especially when you consider how long ago they were built, I am grateful to Nigel Crow for the loan of them:- Here’s some more pictures of them. Kipford. Dave in relation to the automation on Leaford, I thought I would go some way to explain how it has been done, but I must stress I am in no way an expert on Railroad & Co or indeed in any thing to do with DCC , in fact before I can start I must thank Two Tone Green and John from Bromsgrove Models because without their help and advice the automation certainly would never have happened. The Components. Listed below are the components I have used on this project made by manufacturers of my preference, there are many other components available made by other manufacturers which could be used as well or instead :- NCE Power Cab. When used with the Power Pro they are regarded as throttles, but as they do not have means to be connected to a desk or lap top computer they would not on their own be suitable for this. NCE 5 amp Power Pro. Equipped with an appropriate connection to a computer. The heart of the layout it controls everything and is connected to my Laptop via the cable pictured below. Team Digital SMD 82 Switch Machine Driver. Connects into the power bus and then each one can drive 8 SEEP point motors, once the point motors are given an address and there direction defined they can then be controlled from the power cabs or the laptop either singularly or in routes via macros. there are 4 used on Leaford. NCE Auxilary Input Unit. Daisy chain connects into the cab bus (each one has to be regarded as a throttle and therefore given a separate address) and all the block detectors are connected to it, each one can handle 14 block inputs. There are 3 used on Leaford. Team Digital DBD 22 Double Block Detector and NCE Single Block Detector. The Layout is split into block sections and each block must have a detector so that individual trains can be located at all times. The live power feed for each block section from the power bus is passed through the coil on the block detector before being connected to the track (the neutral is connected to the track as per usual). Railroad & Co Gold. The software that enables all of the components mentioned to function under the control of a laptop, you can draw your trackplan onto the computer screen detailing the position of points, signals, block sections etc, you can then set the braking points for trains to stop, the speed they travel at, the order trains start and stop and so on it all adds up to fantastic fun and I can assure you that it is very addictive. The pink sections displaying blocks occupied. I hope that this very simple guide is of help and if you require further guidance keep an eye out in the DCC section of this forum as there are very often related questions/ topics discussed. Dave I wish you the best of luck, automation can be quite intensive to say the least and many times my laptop has nearly gone through my dining room window with frustration, but with the help of Two Tone and John I persevered and I am told by my doctor that I will be able to go home soon. My regards Kevin.
  14. Thanks Jaeson, I wonder if you really know what you are letting yourself in for, as for crashing the stock I have been DCC for a long time but still manage to crash. Heres a couple of pictures taken at the weekend, I always look forward to take pictures at shows because shots are available that are not at home. I hope that you like em! The new and old fiddle roads together, Usually at home the cassette storage racks are in between them - hence the gap. And it is good to see ye old cottage again as it has been buried under general clutter whilst the new work has been going on. Kevin.
  15. Hi Leon, 37711 I beleive started out as a limited edition from one of the Model Magazines and has modifications to the window arrangement and re-painted by Nigel, I also love it to bits - I shall be reluctant to give it back. Boy oh boy, Basingstoke Show what a weekend, I enjoyed every minute of it, My thanks to the organisers I thought the show was a credit to them all, my thanks to PaulRHB for posting the Vids, my thanks to all who called by and said hello (NSEDAZ, I am sorry to hear of your news,I look forward to seeing you soon)and a special thankyou to Temeraire and Pitbull for being load shifters, taxi services, track fixers, loco providers, coffee geterers, train operators, and just being bloody good company and fun. Heres hoping to do it all again at Wilton on the 7th and 8th of May Kevin
  16. Yes Basingstoke Show less than two days away, dont forget the location Aldworth Science College, Western Way, Basingstoke. Opening times Sat 10.00 to 17.00 Sun 10.00 to 16.00 Oh yes! did I mention that Leaford will be there amongst very distinguished company, I look forward to meeting you all. Here's a couple of pickies. Visitor to Leaford, shades of Hamworthy with Powyll Duffryn wagons hauled by heavyweight 37.(courtesy Nigel Crow) Shades of Amlwch, Redstripe Railfreight 31 and Acid Tanks. (No not that sort of acid) A rare picture of a bus not on a bridge? admiring glances for preserved King Alfred (Winchester) Bedford VAL GCG704C on shuttle duties to local Model Railway Exhibition. See you over the weekend Kevin.
  17. Hi Guys, just a reminder that the Basingstoke show is coming up in a couple of weeks (12-13 March, Aldworth Science College, Western Way, Basingstoke) Leaford will be there please drop by and say hello. Household Coal waiting for unloading (and some means of unloading) in Leaford depot. And a visitor 50031 Hood waits for fitters attention before returning to Eastleigh. See you in Basingstoke. Kevin.
  18. Hello Darren, I have used the Express Models lighting kits and very nice they are to, but as they seem difficult to get hold off, I now make my own using DCC Concepts 2mm tower LED's both the Daylight White and the Bi/Color Amber/Red, I also used the as supplied resister thingies as described in the instructions, - I get mine from Bromsgrove Models. 2no. 2mm Tower Bi/Color Amber/Red taped together for Head/Rear headcode marker lights. 2mm Tower Daylight White for the Headlights. Installation on 73212 not very pretty but it does the job. Older sister loco 73001 shunts steel ready to be unloaded at Leaford distribution depot. I hope that all of this helps, I too am not a great electrical bod but it is not that difficult honest!! all that is needed is plenty of patience (and a soldering iron of course). Cheerio for now. Kevin.
  19. Hi Jeff, I agree the electrics on Leaway Park were bloody terrifying, luckily Paul Rusbridge and not me dealt with all of that as he designed and built it, it worked brilliantly and was very reliable. Class 73/2 couples up to an empty Eastleigh van transporter train. P.C.M. wrote, Latest pics look good, I like your pallets with loads, who does them? Cheers Peter. Hello Peter, All of the pallet loads seen in the above photo are supplied through Ten Commandments including the kegs and bricks(www.cast-in-stone.co.uk) product numbers W144 for the boxes and W173 for the sacks, the pallets themselves are I think Peco. Cheerio for now. Kevin
  20. Hi guys, unfortunately I have been layed up for a while with a tummy bug hence my lack of posts. Pat C wrote "Do you have any pictures of Leaway Park? I can still remember joining the crowd for the Duchess hauled steam special that you ran at Imrex one year! Did the building under construction at one end ever get completed? Patrick" Pat, I do not have any photos of Leaway Park but I do have (courtesey of Nigel Crow) some DVD/Video which I will post as soon as I discover how to:- including I think a steam special, also the building under construction morphed slowly into a fantastic multi-story car park (courtesey of another Nigel this time Nigel Leadbeater). To be honest the layout was never really finished scenically as I could never really get it how I wanted it to be. Any way time for a photo The late afternoon sun reflects of off a NSE Class 50 in the yard. My thanks for your comments NSEDAZ, here is another picture of another bus. Southampton Corporation Guy Arab keeps the photographers happy outside Leaford station. And finally "Why cant I drive the Forklift" See you soon Kevin
  21. Hi Darren, The VR is an EFE edition, but perhaps you would prefer this version also an EFE Finally Class 47 waits for the shunters after bringing in a rake of BBA's and BAA's. Cheers now. Kevin
  22. My thanks to you Alex for your kind words, I look forward to seeing you at Basingstoke and Wilton I will do as you suggest and bring Model Rail issue no 1. to both , as to the gantry crane, it is a 2 Ratio Kits joined and re-built to the width required and then painted with Railmatch Railfreight Grey. It would appear that the driver of Wilts & Dorset Bristol VR has lost his way to Wimborne - first reports suggest that he got distracted by all this sitting around on top of bridges!! NSE DAZ wrote, "Just a quick question, is the class 73 effected by the third rail as mine kept rubbing have you had to carry out any modification to the 73's?" I just removed the sand pipes moulding off of the bottom of the bogies ,also I left off the little plastic discs supplied when installing the third rail, I was concerned that because of the tight radius stock would ground on it but I have had no problems. pitbull1845 wrote, "3rd rail down Kevin, you have been busy. Any chance of some more photos? Do your drivers need training on a class 70??" I can oblige with a photo Scott, but no volunteers for the training I'm afraid. PatC wrote, "Great to see further developments on Leaford Kevin. Fancy a return visit to Romsey in a couple of years time?" My thanks to you Pat for your kind offer, but it is doubtfull that Leaford will still exist by then, perhaps you would consider its replacement though? Kevin
  23. Thank you Modelling Mike, time for some more pickies. 73212 on a filling in turn after repairs from Eastleigh, Class 33 places wagons on the depot ready to be unloaded. Class 73 arrives at Leaford for the first time "on the juice" with a Brighton relief working. Now where is that Bachmann 2EBP and Hornby VEP? Regards Kevin
