  1. A casual flick through any mid-20th c WTT reveals that there were more freight trains than passenger on most lines, even though rail was the default mode of transport for the majority of travelers, and its generally accepted that freight subsidised passenger until the rise of the motor lorry post ww2. So I contend the history of freight transport is a story they should tell well and often.

  2. snip! Per way or S & T staff had the full kit and wore it, but I'm not sure that shunters were issued with it.

    Snip!

The P-Way and S&T were issued with the short "mini-vest", gloves and boots by payroll deduction, but nothing more in the way of ppe. Company coats and jackets were still dark grey, in the summer the old lags wore old tatty shirt jacket and trousers, probably from Oxfam. We trainees wore t-shirts and jeans. There was a custom, frowned on by the supervisors, to wear the mini-vest around the waist so you could sit on rails, sleepers whatever and keep some of the filth off your own clothes.

  3. But what method was used to build a cess that had a good walking surface?

In the 1970's there were still some quiet lines in use which hadn't seen much action from mechanised track maintenance. The cess could either be 1/2" or less gravel or locomotive ash. My experience is of both GW and LM lines in the West Midlands.

An old S&T supervisor told me that the traditional p-Way lengthmen used to acquire a length of point rodding (18 feet) and use it to align the stones on the edge of the ballast shoulder.

  4. After discovering Letraset disappeared some time ago and that Fox transfers were too large and watersliding all the individual letters would have been a PITA I sent a custom job to Railtec transfers. An all in one waterslide and I'm very pleased with the quality.

Do you have photos of this building? I wonder if the Gill Sans font isn't a bit modern for 1915. I associate it more with Art Deco / 1930-1950.

  5. £110 made at my pilot visit to the Ketch Car Boot Sale. Very chuffed indeed. Lessons learned for a future visit. The remains of the MiL's stuff to clear, then to start on Mum and Dad's. 62 years of accumulated possessions.
