Yes, a former GWR Hawksworth inspection saloon. File under prototype for everything department.

As it's sunny outside, I set this up. The Desert Sand really does look much better in full sun than the full dull (or indoor lighting): http://www.flickr.com/photos/welsh_snapper/8521395984/in/set-72157632869016445/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/welsh_snapper/8521397350/in/set-72157632869016445/

And as far as anyone buying this Enterprise off Ebay, then the buyer has absolutely no relationship with Steam whatsoever. That's why I don't buy new locos from anyone on eBay, and only from an authorised dealer. That way the SoGA can be honoured.

I've uploaded some shots of my Entrprise to Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/welsh_snapper/sets/72157632869016445/ I took it outside to snap in the better light. RWJ

    Prototype for everything, then.

I should have specified UK RTR models. After all, this is a board about UK modelling primarily.

Yes, shunting lights if you want to call them that. Perhaps I should have referred to it as the "round little light on the right".

I'm so, so glad that Dapol opted to use warm white LEDs for the running light and headcode backlight. Am I correct in thinking Dapol are the first to do this, and the Western the first RTR to feature it? Everything else I've seen photos of uses blue-white LEDs and/or yellow LEDs to represent tungsten. Arrrggghhhh! Tungsten white is *white*, not yellow. Bachmann, Heljan, Hornby take note!

Oh yes indeed, which is why I'm an advocate of the Dyna Drive system when coupled to a pinion drive train. You can realistically "fail" a loco then send another to drag the now-unpowered one. It's a pity it never took off. RWJ

    Dapol Class 21/29

I reckon Dapol should do unpowered ones, as 50% of the time each loco was dead.

D6124 and D6127 double heading at Gleneagles in 1962 http://www.searchenginelibrary.org.uk/trains/railwaysuk15/Albums/Album1/Source/Diesel__D6124_D6127__21__Gleanagles_62aug.htm from http://www.searchenginelibrary.org.uk/trains/railwaysuk15/album1.htm There's a lot in that album to froth over. If you look at it in a certain light, it does sort of look NHS-hearing-aid beige. (See last Sunday's Top Gear for more on this colour.) Enterprise will benefit from a coating of semi-gloss varnish.

The postman's just been. Ooh, ooh, just gorgeous isn't it? Like an exquisite coffee & walnut cake. And no chewed screws on mine, either. It'll sit on static display so I need to organise a glass case to keep the dust off. RWJ
  14. A PDF would be much easier to deal with. Some of the details are tiny, and posed a challenge to photograph well in the dark archives. Naturally, the archives service would professionally scan the whole lot for me - at a price. I can easily assemble the images into a PDF, with a brief overview for each set. RWJ

Another snippet of info: "BTW they also they used to work over the Nantwich - Market Drayton - Wellington line as a way of delivering the ones built at Crewe to the WR."

I've asked a pal of mine who's a railway historian who's forgotten more than I'll ever know. He says that the Wizzos would normally have been detached at Chester for a kettle to work it forward to Birkenhead. He can't definitively say a Wizzo did or did not work through to Birkenhead. Someone else told me years ago that they did, hence why I assumed it was the case. It'll all hinge on photographic proof and personal observations. RWJ
  17. If you head over to http://www.flickr.com/photos/welsh_snapper/sets you'll see all the plans I photographed. The BCR had four proposals for expansion. There are five sets for them because one of the proposals was spread across two archive documents. Richard

    Westerns did run to Birkenhead.

Mine's in the post, which usually means Royal Fail's industrial mincing machines. Anyway, looks like I'll need to order correct sized Precision Labels train reporting numbers. 1A70 one end, 1J19 the other, and a lot of creative licence for it to accidentally escape onto the Cambrian. Such gremlins aren't acceptable on a £100 loco never mind a £160 one. I'm glad you found a way to remove the chewed screws. It typically is possible, but the methods can vary from elegant to downright ugly. What people need to remember is that no matter what you buy, be it a loco, vacuum cleaner, fridge, or whatever, the cost of poor QC in terms of warranty returns/repairs *always* gets passed onto the poor customer in the form of higher prices. And it can be avoided. RWJ

I'll say it again, quality control, quality control, quality control. It needs to really be drummed in. Pointless going to such lengths to design a fantastic model if there's little QC.

One that we know of on here. Remember that the vast majority of collectors won't be members of this board, not that will they want to fit DCC, mind. But at least Steam have a few left over to replace damaged ones. Don't you understand the point that it's a QC issue? If the mainstream models are similarly affected, then it is going to be a problem, no? We just have to hope that the issue of the chewed threads and the glued cab interior weren't widespread. RWJ

    Dapol 'Western'

But what can Steam do other than refund the money? I assume that Dapol will be on the phone to China next week to get them not to damage the screw heads when assembling? It sounds like QC needs to be tightened. RWJ
