Fully you should mention that. I've just stopped drooling over the new Farish IC Charter Open Firsts. Not sure about getting anything else in the current production run but can certainly ask the question after Chinese New Year.

And the slightest thought about green sleepers hasn't even begun to speculate about the merest possibility of crossing my mind...

Thing with the white roof ones is that one often appeared in the normal Inverness or Aberdeen trains and also the Charter sets often had one without the white roof. Mixing them is fairly prototypical.

  2. Before I get down to the local shop to order can anyone elaborate on the White Roof serial numbers?

374-820 BR Mk1 FO First Open BR InterCity Charter (Executive) £47.95

     Or

374-820A BR Mk1 FO First Open BR InterCity Charter (Executive) £47.95

The pictures look the same. Don't want to order the wrong one. Looking for the Intercity to be the swallow version not the older sans serif.

    Thanks

That makes 2 of us, preferably with an intercity mainline 37/4 to go with it - this is the last main livery to be done on the 37/4's since the retool and anyone modelling Scotland or Buxton in the 80's or 90's needs at least once

IC Mainline has been done on the OO 401 so wouldn't over surprise me if it pops up on a refreshed version one day. Proper IC would be good also. 7 examples in the 1990s 152/221/251/505/510/683/685 and 1 in 254 for the modern era.

The 158 looks the part, have you tried coupling the outer ends or two a 156.  Mine runs ok but not match 156 speeds, for paired workings which would have been fun.

I turned saloon lights off as the tinted windows dull it down in real life.  Even after dark and with new lamps model is a tad bright for me.

I couldn't get the couplings to  match but haven't tried too hard, would think the speed settings would need matching. The Farish 158 definitely has a low speed on full power which I think is down to the motor being quite a small device.

  5. How do people feel over the 158s top speed? I feel it should be a little quicker topping out. Tried tweaking CVs to with someone who knows what there doing and still feels like its a steady runner but not quick.

Very sad to see Hattons go.    I need a couple more 14XX.58XX locos      It sounds to me like demographics has triggered the run down.  We are all getting older, and it's still the same people buying (or dying)  My local model shop  has had the same proprietor for 40 odd years and has a huge pile of various era stock covering 1990 -2023   Virtually nothing  for pre group per WW2 or BR stem era, just a few niche models.
It seems everyone is chasing the 65 to dead demographic who have every single locomotive ever produced so we have to make 1825 steamers or one offs and soon I assume Neverwazzs, I can't wait for the LMS Passenger Garratt for the Highland so I think I had better bodge one myself.
The modern image (Not Post 1968) ranges seem many and varied but how many units are actually shifted  I'm not sure how many people want them, but my experience modern eras are about 5 years (4 for Highland 1985/9) and its an absolute nightmare finding compatible stock to run side by side on a modernish era layout.

I think Hattons woke up and smelled the coffee and decided to wind down the business before it became unprofitable.  With a contracting market this will alleviate some of the pressure on competitors, but will not help manufacturers.   Hopefully someone else will take on their moulds but really it seems to me that the bottom has fallen out of the model railway mass market .

It often feels like the to eras that matter to the industry are Green transition and Latest day Private bonanza liveries. Those of us doing the early 90s or late 80s seem to struggle. Sad to see Hattons go been a regular for 40 years but my main sympathy falls with the staff who I hope are ok.

  7. My views so far:

Positive: great looking model, detail is spot on can't fault the body shape, livery numbers, letters etc. Runs OK and saloon lighting is nice.

Negative: no snowplough cowling supplied. Scotrail fitted these early on in 1990s.

Lighting, although the Saloon lighting is good the cabs are also lit. Cab lights are rarely on when trains are driven.

Can't overly complain though the model is light years ahead of the old tooling.

Started mine. Tried pushing lights out with cocktail stick. Stuck in so tight that the cocktail stick just crushed itself inwards and no lights pushed out. In the end got frustrated and teased the inside with a screwdriver gently and one side of the light unit broke off and a red light snapped also. Also the body and the pick up wires are very tight and so far won't fit. All in all pretty frustrated. Put it down now to renumber  a 26 which is far more simple!!

2nd car went better, lights came out with  cocktail stick. All back together and working again.

Split headcode with doors and no headlight have been done John. I have a Rail blue one….they are from the first batch and I think the second production runs.

    and in green

Not done with skirts cut round buffers though. That's the one a lot of us would like and buy.

    Hi Gang,

Done two sets of the Strathclyde body swaps. All 4 cars are back together and seem to be running ok with all lights still intact. It is not a job for the faint hearted as some of the items, pick up wires especially, are a tight fit and you need to be careful not to bend the retaining lugs on the floor of the body. The light guides are incredible fiddly to re-fit but achievable. Getting the gangway, complete with hair spring back in place resulted in rescuing it from the floor a couple of times, but nevertheless, it got easier with practice. No real differences in technique between motor car and trailer, except that the seating on the trailer needs to be ‘encouraged’ forward to reseat correctly.

The opportunity was also taken to remove excessive grease from the drive train.

I’ll do the other two pairs once I have removed the decals ready for renumbering and rebranding as SPT with the whoosh once I find the correct decals.

    Anyone else done theirs yet??

    Thank you.

I use my android phone, a ring light and a tripod. The ring light has filters so can adjust the type and brightness of the light. I then photostack several different focal points together (most pictures are made of 6 - 9 images). The image attached is 9 different pictures with different focal points, ring light has an orange and soft white filter, and turned to half brightness.

Cheers, I thought some assistance from lighting was the case. I have decent android camera too but have not got a light yet, tripod keeps it steady of course!!

I must ask what you use for taking pictures with? I struggle to get results with either my phone or my camera and may hunt in the sales for something good for models. N gauge isn't always the easiest to shoot but your shots look great and do it justice.
