I honestly have no idea. Probably not looking for much - just something to cover the raw materials.
Lovely layout, If I had the space would consider it like a shot. Very Kyle meets Mallaig vibe.

Good to see 85110 in action. Was my handiwork. Hope it still roars away!

Thanks Marcus. That sounds an interesting night. The cabs always seemed nice and roomy from what I remember of open days and the like.
Anyway I've rejigged the templot to add the discussed changes. Looks better I think. Bit of a loss as to how to catch point the right end of the loops now though baring in mind they sit on the viaduct at that end. I'm sure chucking trains off on there is a no no!
A spread catch point, opens up both sides leading to various check rails. Am sure some still exist somewhere.
I am also thinking strongly about a move to N.....

Hi,
Managed to do a bit more to 86425 on the detailed end. I have added the bracket for the vac pipe and also fitted some plastic strip to represent the bogie frame now the coupling has been removed, you can just make it out in the picture. I am planning on fitting the lifeguards to this aswell. Also the replacement pantograph is now fitted.
Managed to look at the Farish class 87 last night and it appears the bogies could be moved back to the correct position but I will need to make some replacement drive shafts from brass rod/tube.
Cheers
Simon
Fantastic, had to do a double take on it being N! Doesnt half make me think!

They now have a very handy 2nd Cabinet to view in the store. I am a very old customer of the place and never had an issue although can always pop in as they are my local shop. I dont tend to buy new as I butcher most things or at least weather so am very pleased they have started showcasing second hand.

Echoing other comments, saw this on Saturday, this was a cracker to watch!

Fantastic, Woodhead a little before my time but fascinating nevertheless. Keep the updates coming!

They used to work on their own also on some more localised traffic so having 2 motorised ones gives more options.
They also used to do snowploughing work in the area for something different.

Very nice! Am going to do an ex paint shop 37425 in construction which is right for my era. Which one are you going to do as 688's partner?

A little progress on 37688 last night. Removed the old nose grilles and added some new etched ones. Was as careful as I could be to reduce painting. I think it went well just a bit of a touch up required around the grilles and then decals, names and a good weathering. Also filed the buffers oval to suit.
Looking good!

Hi Guys. I think I'm back Apologies for my 'dummy out of the pram' moment earlier in the month, I have had some personal issues and have not been the happiest person in the World. Hopefully back to normal now, and more importantly, back to updates from the workbench. So here are a couple of updates.
Now this is a bit different to my usual flavour of stock. I have to say this particular loco, ugly as it is, has a very strange attraction to it. Or maybe its just me! Not a lot done, front end detailing added, and a general weathering.
Another lovely model to reach the workbench...Heljan's 128. It's an absolute pleasure to work on these things. Again this is slightly out of my chosen period of modelling, but on seeing it at my local model shop, I just couldn't resist. Heljan certainly seem to have upped their game of late.Dirty and dusty.A new technique tried here....I have tried to replicate dirt that has been rainwashed along the vehicle, and then dried. It's not that easy to pick out from the picture, but the engine and surrounding area is quite heavily oil stained.Greasy buffers to finish!Another 'different' vehicle to my usual stuff, an Inter-City Swallow dvt. Inspired I think after last months Inter City repainted 86!A particular area I wanted to get right was the cab roof. They have a characteristic streaking, where dirt is forced up and back from the sloped cab front, especially in the wet. I'm happy with the result.I must admit, I found these vehicles completely uninteresting, and totally lacking in character when they arrived in force on the ECML (they are completely silent!), but this Hornby one is a really nice model. Looks the business with lights and a dusting down. And back to my staple diet37506.Had this sitting on the bench for way to long to do for a mate who I owed a big favour to. This is getting large white numbers, and the name 'British Steel Skinningrove'. I created a glossy patch for the new number, and also removed the plain white Thornaby Kingfisher on the engine room doors, and replaced them with the coloured ones.I ended up having to use Fox gauge 1 running numbers....the 00 large logo ones were too big. These are the same size as the oddly sized ones found on some large logo Scottish 37's and 47's.Hi,
How did your 86 turn out in the end? I am torn over wether to an 86/6 or 86/2 with a Heljan one I have.

Glad you like the 60, grey ones are quite hard to come by these days. I used a 'Mainline' triple grey donor for 60004, carefully removing the branding with a blunt scalpel and T cut. With the whole loco satin varnished afterwards it leaves no marks at all. You can also use the Transrail 60066, but this is a bit more work removing the branding. Easiest to 're sector' is petroleum 60062, but these are quite scarce. Coal sector transfers from replica, Toton depot stickers from Precision decals.
The Hornby 60 is still the best RTR diesel IMHO.
May just totally respray, will be ex works condition for my era!

Love the 60, will have to get one for Halebank. Can just about as am sticking rigidly to 1990 and a GM free zone.

Hi Cav
Nice to see a proper loco appearing at last. Don't worry only kidding. I have put a request on the WNXX forum in the liveries & paint section asking if anyone has any dates for when the Tinsley aggregates 37's were painted into construction livery. If I get any replies I will let you know asap. As John says you will be safe with 37688 as it was named on the 23rd June 1988 at Hindlow works. If you model this one though you will have to make it nice and shiny.
As well as the grilles being changed there is also the fire extinguisher pulls that on the refurbs is located under the smaller grill on all four corners.
Keep up the good work.
Marcus
Big numbers on the ends also in a non standard style. Look forward to seeing this develop as even though I am a 4mm modeller its an era and location with much interest.

The construction sector loco has to be before july 1988 as that is when 45110 was withdrawn. I have found a pic of 37687 as suggested by Mick in may 1988 still in red stripe Rf so not a big window of opportunity for the repaint. 2 months from May to July!
Cav,
688 was named Great Rocks in construction livery at Hindlow in June 1988, it also worked down the Cambrian with 380 in June '88 so I would say that is the first one in it and was the first I certainly remember.

Does a 37/5 count? Pics in this thread in the old forum, including one of mine with a red stripe from 1987 (near the bottom):
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=51497&start=25
5s and 6s Were the same on the inside. Exterior differences do occur but the classification for TOPS was 37/5s included the Thornaby Metals fleet, St Blazey China Clay, Buxton Stone & Cardiff Coal.
Buxton had 37676-37688 initially with some 37/4s joining up also once the West Highlands of Scotland had reduced its need in 1989.

37688 was an early one and was a namer too. Most others though were painted over their major exam cycles between 1988-1992

Well, the next colour has gone on. Lower bodyside, listed in the Fox painting guide as needing RM200 'Executive light grey'. Looks weird to me, almost brown like. Anyone? Also, does anybody know what colour the roofs were on these things, same as upper bodyside, or light grey as per the blue ones? It's very difficult to tell from photographs.
That lower body side looks the right shade.

Hi JBM. The hardest part about doing the 86 I have found so far was stripping the paint off! Very very tough in places, along with some of the glued in marker lenses, even after hours in paintstripper they refused to budge.
Anyway, another loco lands on the bench.
This red stripe beastie.
A nice enough model out of the box from Bachmann. However this one had some interesting livery stages, so the owner wants me to do it as follows.
Red 'British Steel Skinningrove' nameplates.
Large white numbers added. (as per prototype, the cabside black numbers will be retained.)
Plain white Kingfisher to be replaced with a coloured one.
Lightly weathered.
Flat matt coat to finish.
I also have another 3 37's on the way that shock horror, are not to be re painted in either blue, large logo, or railfreight! Wants them in new fangled triple grey livery for some reason.......
Might be time to rename my thread 'the loco' workbench thread as I can't get anywhere near the layout
What have you used to strip the paint on the 86?
I prefer triple grey altough have just done a weathering job on a Red stripe 37 to gain some experience....
