After being away for a few days trying very hard to find further information for my Q7 build I decided that this could wait no longer (I have to be honest and say I am surprised I have resisted so far).

Any way I took it out of the box for real yesterday and started to ad the detail to the sides ending up tonight with the sides and ends below to show for my efforts.

After reading the Derby line thread and enquiring of Tony (Diabateg) where he got his cast door stops from the reply being Westdale but that they were quite expensive I decided to have a go at making some myself from scrap etch (where would we be without scrap etch?.I am quite pleased with the results (see for yourselves and offer comments) and may try something similar but with thinner wire for a Comet 4mm Period III version of this coach that I plan to build alongside this one (nothing like setting oneself a challenge ).

I realised that there is no point asking for comments on the door stops if you cannot actually see them DOH!!! :icon_redface: They don't look twisted in reality either aren't close up's cruel?

I have now got around to taking a picture of what's included in the box. The additions are as you would expect wheels (slaters) and paint/transfers which will be Halfords Rover Damask Red and HMRS when I get there. The roof, floor, solebars and their overlays are all generic part and will need cutting to length for this 50' coach (presumably they are for a 57' one but I haven't measured them).

More progress to follow when I get to it.

I have decided to have a go at a blog for my 7mm builds as I don't expect to build that many - I have far too many 4mm kits in the to build pile to abandon 4mm.

I mentioned to my wife earlier this year that I would like to build something in 7mm as a display piece. She bought me this kit for my birthday in October.

I will post some pics of the etches first and then of the build as it progresses. I probably wont actually start the build itself for a couple of weeks as I want to make progress on my Q7 first but I thought I would start the blog to see how it all works.

I managed to make quite good progress with the coach body on Saturday PM and Sunday. After spending time making my mini drill powered cut off device (on my Q7 thread) I turned my attentions to this coach. I managed to get the body assembled after much pondering how to hold it square for soldering.

I ultimately soldered it with a cheap and cheerful version of a micro flame (I bought it off a market stall with a view to just using it for soldering solid DJH chassis frames together). It proved a godsend and it will now encourage me to invest in a better quality one - not that there is anything wrong with this one in terms of being able to solder with it. The only drawback is having to manually light it each time while trying to hold what I am soldering place (I started of on Saturday with a box of matches, swiftly upgrading to a lighter on Sunday when the shops opened). I am impressed with how little solder you can get away with.

I have also got the 4mm Comet Kit that I am doing in parallel to a similar state of construction. Which is body soldered together underframe cut to length solebars cut to length and inserts ready to solder in (the instructions say to stick these in with impact adhesive but I intend to solder them in using 180 degree solder so that hopefully they wont come loose while soldering the solebars to the underframe. On the 4mm kit I have got the solebars attached and the truss rod soldered into place.

    Hopefully some progress photos tomorrow.

I made further progress on the BG on Sunday but the weather has been terrible so Photos have had to wait until today. I have assembled the underframe trussing and the solebars and made a start detailing the underframe castings - adding cable to the dynamo etc. The battery box looks to be quite a crude casting with no back as is usual with cast battery boxes. I am still trying to decide whether to make a new one out of brass or just make a back for the cast one. No further progress with the 4mm one but they are now more or less both at the same state of assembly. I have taken a couple of together shots and until you view them together you don't really get an appreciation of how much bigger all round that O gauge is.

I have just been surprised and delighted by receiving a DJH 7mm A4 with Corridor tender along with Slaters wheels and plunger pickup's. Even more encouraging is the 12 metres of Peco track that accompanied it.

I followed it up by suggesting to the wife that I now needed some LNER coaches to go with it.

I have to admit that like others I don't think that the blog is generating the same type of interest and dialogue that the traditional thread does. So when I post updates on my coach build - and I have made further progress, I will do it on a Work bench thread.
