At SWAG yesterday Mark (46444) gave me a couple of Berry Wiggins tank wagons for Lydbrook Dean. Here they are being shunted by a 16xx in a typical forest setting.

I would have to add myself to the "didn't realise how small it was" category. I think it must be a product of photography as I was getting the same reaction. Sorry I didn't ' t get the chance to speak to you more as I had wanted to have a closer look at your weathering tecniques

Sorry I missed you today Jay. Thanks for the phot. It’s always interesting to see how others interpret the layout.

Safely back home and unpacked. Stopped off for a Cornish pizza once we were over the bridge. Great to meet everyone and thanks to Rob for organising the day.

Whose bringing the rest of the layout or are you only exhibiting legs? Personally I was looking forward to seeing the layout.
Martyn
Oops sorry. Second leg should have read "scenic boards". Rest assured I shall be exhibiting a complete layout.

Progress with the lorries for the quarry. The Millicast kits make up nicely, but they are not for a beginner. The material used is quite brittle, and thre isn’t much in the way of location points. Painting brings out the detail. I’ve had some transfers made for the quarry company.

Good luck with the show, Alex. Hope all goes well,
Rob.
Thanks Rob. I’m looking forward to it and it will be good practice for next weekend 😊

Yelverton is packed ready for the Saltash Model Railway show in Isambard House (The railway station) this weekend. After that it’s off to SWAG the following Sunday, so it’s a busy couple of weekends ahead.

I’m making a couple of lorries for the quarry at Lydbrook Dean. They are Millicast resin kits.

One question, the rear baseboard hinge is covered by the cottage, but where is the front hinge? Or have I missed something?
All the best, Dave.
Well spotted Dave. The front hinge and risers are removable. The risers are bolted to the layout frame. You just need to remember to have bothe hinges in place before trying to fold the layout. A removable piece of scenery will fill the holes when the layout is set up. I firstctried the idea on "Upwell Drove" which has removable hinges front and back as I wanted to keep the scenery at the back and front of the layout low.

How do you find the powder weathering behaves over time? I have found some of mine have taken on a slightly satiny/sticky finish after about 6 months. I didn't seal them all as I was worried a coat of varnish might dull down the contrast between the weathering shades, but now I'm thinking that I should always use a coat of acrylic matt varnish as a final sealing coat.

btw, is that the one that Rob cleaned most of the factory weathering off? It looks really good.
It is.

Looks good on Yelverton, Alex.
How does it's mechanism like the Cornish air? Does it run OK now?
So far so good. I was aware of the running issues, which is why I hadn’t bought one, but I reasoned that all it has to do on Yelverton is run up and down a straight piece of track and stop in the station. So far it seems up to that.

Currently testing (playing with) this, a DJM 14xx, kindly loaned by NHY581. The story of it’s weathering can be found in his thread.

More work on the 3 way point. I’m trying out some new ideas for track painting and these are the results so far.
After priming, the track is sprayed with Halfords camouflage brown. The sleepers are then painted with railmatch sleeper grime and the chairs and railsides patch painted with Mig old rust and dark rust. The sleepers are drybrushed. I used Mig dunkelgrau and dust. The rails and chairs are give a Mig light rust wash followed by some Mig streaking rust effects. The whole was then given a quick spray of Humbol acrylic Matt varnish and left over night to dry. When dry, wreathing powders were applied - starting with Humbrol smoke, followed by dark earth and red oxide. The next step will be ballasting.

More work on the track ballasting and painting as the scenery advances to the centre of the layout. Still lots to add in the way of undergrowth and the trees are a work in progress.

I ‘ve been working on the presentation and lighting of Lydbrook Dean. There are two lighting gantries, made of 4mm ply, stiffened with lengths of PSE. The structure is supported on “L” shaped brackets bolted to the rear of the layout, and “wings” at the front of the layout which plug in. The lights are LED strip lights from the “Colours” range at B&Q, which are “daisy chained” together into separate circuits for front and back.
The back drop is wallpaper lining paper, suspended from the rear lighting gantry with drawing pins.
The scenery above the tunnel and the crossing keeper’s cottage are removable for transportation. The cottage also covers the rear hinge block which allows the layout to be folded.
Finally, a picture of a 46xx shunting in the quarry.

More work in Whitehill quarry. The grass is growing round the tracks and one of the quarries lorries is driving up to the tracks.
