  1. tehehe - we were talking last night about my visit to Wycrail 'What did you buy? 'Some books and a rolling road thingy' (followed by long explanation of a rolling road.... phew!) 'Anything else?' 'Well I did buy a loco and three wagons' Oh, so you spent quite a bit then? 'Well it wasn't an expensive loco. And altogether the lot cost nothing like as much as the thing I bought you at the auction on Friday' Conversation moved to the next subject area........
  2. Hi Michel. No need to apologise - we all have our own favourites As it happens 'Kestrel' was the one I didn't see and I don't think I would have been impressed - but one never knows. 'Lion' had the advantage - in some ways - of a short life and not finishing up with the kind of living death that 'Falcon' suffered as its failures grew more frequent and its uniqueness and lack of spares kept it out of traffic - a sad end really.
  3. Now then Michel - Lion looked fabulous as it made its shining white way through a myriad of grubby steam and diesel locos, and it was kept remarkably clean in its short life.
  4. It depends on the individual design Tom. In some cases the pits contained tubs into which the ash was (hopefully) deposited and these were lifted on the ash plant hoist to be emptied into a wagon. Fortunately for the Western was generally much more basic - ash dropped into pit and subsequently shovelled out for loading into wagons to go to tip or whatever.
  5. That's interesting because no load is given for 72XXX in the Loads Book - however it would presumably be the same as the loads for a WC/BB. Interestingly the WC/BB loads are exactly the same as the Black 5/Std 73XXX other than south of Corfe Mullen where the Bulleids were allowed an extra 25 tons in each direction.
  6. OK so it's along time since I was a Stationmaster (Area Manager in my day) but it's more recognisable to non-railway folk than many of the other jobs I have done over the years!
