  1. There is still the delicious smell of Mintballs outside the works when "Uncle Joe" is boiling up, most mornings, worth a walk past and a sniff !!!!

Wigan pies are not quite as they were though, most local bakeries long gone.

Kevan Is the conservative club the old night club "Pemps" ?. This was many years ago the Communist party club known locally as "The bomb and dagger"

  2. I went down to the Patent Office trying to register some of my inventions earlier today.

I walked up to the main desk to sign in and the lady pulled out a form to fill out.

She asked for my personal info, wrote it down and then asked me what I had invented.

    I said, 'A folding bottle.'

She said, 'Okay. What do you call it?'

    'A fottle.'

'What else do you have there?'

    'A folding carton.'

'OK, what do you call it?'

    'A farton.'

She chuckled and said, 'Those are silly names for products and one of them sounds a bit crude.'

I was so upset by her comment I grabbed the form and left the office without even telling her about my folding bucket...

  3. Feedback controllers - ECM were the best, I never had any problems with any motor. They both eventually died, replaced a year or two ago with Gaugemaster feedback hand helds. Whilst OK some locos don't like them, running away or jerkilly on down grades. They work as intended on up grades though, with all motors.

I also have a Gaugemaster model Q - 4 track, no feedback, no problems.

It's a pity the old ECM's are no longer made.

  4. I'll raise you this Tony. What a horrible looking loco and livery.

With a little more thought at the design stage this could have been a nice looking loco. Oval buffers, neater & larger drivers side window, front end needs streamlining a bit. The sides / grilles / bogies are functional and not a lot can be done here. The livery is just downright childish. Trainy Mc Trainface !!!! Cut the spots Scotts !!!.

Anyway, here is my favorite diesel of all time - a really beautiful design.

  5. Nice little video of the Madder valley railway working here (on Pendons website). I remember this layout in various model mags back in the 50's / 60's when I was a lad. This and other layouts gave me inspiration. I laid my Lesney OOO push along stuff beside my Tri-ang TT as a narrow gauge line - hardly Pendon stuff - but tons of fun !!

This also is interesting. A PDF of MRJ 1994 featuring Madder Valley

A diesel day at Pendon - why not - I occasionally run my Tri-ang Rocket set !!!!

Anyway - here's "Lion" at Wigan Wallgate back in 1980 - who dares dare model this  (apart from me !!) ?

  6. Hmmm. I once spent too many years in Sin Tellins

You'll remember Pimmies pies (Pimbletts) Spikey. Best thing in St Helens, Steak pies with a touch of spice in the gravy - yummy (even to us Wiganers !!). Long gone but I believe the name has been resurrected. Never tried the new ones.

Sorry to digress, but pies are important to us Wiganers !!

As to Wollybacks, this is a scouse term to anyone from Lancashire outside Liverpool, i.e. St Heleners, Wiganers etc.

  7. I saw this today in W H Smiths, No 2, London Midland Region - Western (North) & Midland lines.£7.99 - 96 pages.

https://shop.kelsey.co.uk/category/BOOK/TN  (click on the Books / Trains / on shed tag)

For me this is a a first class production, very well illustrated, with potted history, allocations etc, mainly in colour with some pull out pages, plans etc. Better than most other Bookazines I've seen lately.

Most content is early blue / green (1968 on) with some earlier photos with steam / diesel shots - a must for modellers of this era. Lots of large colour photos (of mucky diesels !!), and some rare shots of soon to be closed sheds after steam finished. It's in a shed division chapter format - starting with D10 preston division, working south from Carlisle, then on to LMR divisions in the Midlands (D14 London, , D15 Leicester & D16 Toton etc).

There is some interesting stuff at the end re proposed but never built diesel sheds etc.

I have just ordered by post from the above link Vol 1 LM south and Vol 3 eastern region south - both £7.99 post paid from Kelsey, and am looking forward to receiving them.

  8. Pale blue for the walls. It's approximately "sky blue" but of course the real sky is not always the same colour. On the floor I have some rugged non-fluffy variegated green carpet.

The overall feeling is more like the real world in miniature and less like an engineering lab!

Same here in both my loft and garage layouts. The background board sky merges with the wall colour easilly. I also have a similar green carpet in loft.
