  1. Morning lads....Very autumnal here. Bright but chilly. Sounds like there was a very long and slow journey home for some Mick. Doesn't take much these days to completely clog up an area... Looking forward to the weekend when five of us will descend on the High Wycombe Show, followed by a pub lunch.
  2. Thanks Robert. Glad to hear my memory wasn't playing up. Funny how you can recall bits from years ago quite easily, but if you asked me what I did last weekend, I'd really have to think about it. I guess the risks from paternosters all hinged round the precise timing of getting on and off. The slightest hesitation or delay would mean a drop of a foot or so into the car or onto the floor. I found it a little unnerving at first, but accept once you got used to it, it was OK. I worked for four different connector companies between 1972 and 2000, but would guess the most likely one that manufactured military spec products would have been in the early '70's. We were involved with all the GEC Marconi sites, Basildon, Borehamwood, Romford (or was it Ilford?), St Albans, Chelmsford in my patch alone.
  3. Morning all from a wet Berkshire.... Small world Robert. I was fascinated to see the subject of paternoster lifts come up this morning. Reminded me of when I was a young sales guy in electronics and recalled going on one at what I thought was GEC Marconi in Borehamwood. Same place Robert? A weird experience that has come up in conversation. Those younger than I can't believe such a thing existed with the current H & S legislation. Apparently if you didn't get off you just went over the top as it were and down the other side....
  4. Morning all.....Bright and sunny. Must be Monday the ramblers have just walked past. Makes me smile, about 20 of them dressed up as though they're going to the Artic. There's not a lot of wild animals or treacherous paths in the suburbs of Berkshire...
  5. You have my sympathies BoD. I went into the loft last week with a view to clearing some space to store my railway bits and pieces. First box I picked up was a swinging crib for a baby. My son is now 37 and my daughter 27. Was I allowed to take it to the dump? Stupid question really. Gave up and came downstairs....
  6. Morning all....Peed down earlier, but drying out slowly. Must be moving eastwards Tony. Looks like it could be a modelling day for several of us. Done more in on the layout in the last hour than I've done in the past month. Amazing what a difference it makes having a clear room in which to work. It's been a real pleasure and perhaps now I can make some progress. Of course tidy Mrs S has been having a field day with "what did I tell you"........Damn it, she's right once again.
  7. Morning all....That farm looks really beautiful Don. I guess a few days in the sun would do us all the world of good. I read your post Robert and it must be tough for you right now. All you can do is try to fill your day with activities, friends and family to stop you dwelling on the situation. Take one day at a time and you'll get through it. It's never easy....
  8. Morning.... Nothing to report. Bins out, tea brewing. It must be Thursday... New comfy chair? Not the Spanish Inquisition......
  9. I thought that the reputation score had been abandoned. Perhaps nobody loves us after all..... Afternoon BoD....
  10. Morning one and all....'Tis very quiet and very dark. One day I'll get out of this habit of getting up so early. Could be a posse of us boys going to High Wycombe on the 7th. Anyone else going?
  11. Do you know the piano's on my foot? You hum it son and I'll sing it...........
  12. Morning all....Been pottering around for the last hour or so. Just couldn't get back to sleep. The news about the piano factory struck a chord with me Don...
  13. I meant it John. I had an LDV van with a gearstick coming out of the dashboard. I've driven some cars in my time, but this had to be the hardest gearbox in terms of physical effort, I have ever experienced. Got muscles aching in my left shoulder that I never knew I had this morning...
  14. Sorry Mike, saw the YouTube link but was being called so skipped over it at the time. Brilliant! F & S lyrics were very clever. Did a Google on Uncle Mac. Uncle Mac It's been some time since I brought my kids up, but if what I read is true, a lot of things have changed. Photography is certainly frowned upon at school events such as sports days etc Sad that the innocence of such times in your life has now been overtaken by the need to protect children. Thinking back as kids, we were always aware of the strange fellow you may have met in the park, but never really gave it a second thought...In reality it was probably a local issue and the Police were only too aware or such people. The increase in problems with child molestation and photography is certainly one of the downsides of the internet...
  15. Morning Don....No problems with the site this morning over here, so may have been a local issue. Apologies, I must have missed the Flanders and Swan reference. That brings back memories of kids radio with Uncle Mac on Saturday mornings. The songs about Hippo's, Gnu and Bus Drivers were regulars. I guess having a kids radio presenter known as Uncle Mac could get you locked up these days...
  16. Absolutely no chance... I'd sent the wife out first... Just fitted some shelves in an old wardrobe and the sofas were 14 years old so have found a new home in my SiL's conservatory.
  17. Glad to hear boiler is fixed and all are warm 'oop north. Been playing Yorkie man today. Moved two sofa's down to SiL's in Selsey. 150 odd miles in an LDV van. I now have the greatest admiration for delivery drivers everywhere.....
  18. Morning all....Clocks still to do, so that's Sunday taken care of. Glad to hear you enjoyed your day BoD. A Pullman train and a few glasses of champagne sound right up my street. Decided that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em and have been trying to create a blog and get something going on my layout progress. It's not the most obvious process and now have two blogs going with nothing in them. I think my brain cells must have also retired.
  19. Seems like they do DD.....My link
  20. I was curious too Tom. Their website is not too specific, so I quote... This journey will take you on a circular tour through Britain's beautiful countryside whilst you relax aboard the gleaming carriages of the Northern Belle and enjoy a sumptuous lunch with champagne and wine. Just the job!....
  21. OK guys, I'll come clean.....Logged in this morning around 6 and all was well. Tried catching up on all the news and got as far as page 2. Clicked on page 3 and.....bang, off it went. It's a fair cop guv'.... Enjoy your trip BoD. Sounds like a great day....
  22. Morning lads... Apologies for my absence. Had a few flat days and just needed some time to snap out of it. Everything got on top of me and I couldn't really be bothered with much. Thankfully I managed to get some focus and moved all my stock out of my railway room into storage which has helped considerably. I now have plenty of space to work and hopefully getting the layout started again will take my mind off other things. One day I'll work out how to post stuff in a blog and give you guys an update.... Sorry to hear about your loss DD. 43 is no age at all. Sometimes we just take life for granted...
  23. Morning all......Congratulations Phil. I shall look forward to the pic. Feeling like a little lost soul. Still trying to find my feet in this new fangled site and then it went off air for a few days. No doubt someone will turn the light on sooner or later....
  24. I've posted in a seperate thread, but had a call from Howes that Heljan are proving some revised CV values for the lighting if you are running on DCC. They apparently feel the lighting is too bright on factory default settings. http://www.Heljan.dk/faste_filer/modul.asp?vis=nyhedmod&fModul=web588.asp&mode=laesnyhed&artikelid=245
