  1. What do you class as a few years Kevin?  This loco was originally produced with the first open bar and hook coupling which must put it into the 50's era before being fitted with the standard "proper" Tri-ang coupling and was still around I think in the 70's in maroon as in "The Midlander" set.  It may have been taken out during the 60's I guess.  Notice the maroon one has metal tyred tender wheels to help date it.

Photos taken from the Tri-ang website.

I have to say that maroon 3f does have flanged middle drivers so I think somone has been modifying it, 3F was introduced in 58, in 65 was factory weathered, probably a first by a manufacturer, and 66 in midland livery, lasted until at least 1968 so not a bad run for a model.

Even more interesting, apparently it was released as 43620 in BR maroon with late crest in 66/7 but never seen one like that.

  2. How interesting, just picked up a nice 3f with mk2 couplings and a dock shunter. Triang Hornby book says mk3s were introduced in 1959 so both these must come from 1958 when they were both released. Well i guess some of us find that interesting!!!

  3. A great thread which goes to show what a mixed bunch we are.

Away from the railway related stuff my penchant for classic cars exotic and not so exotic seems to be growing more as I get older, and the same  goes for my interest in '60s and '70s films, TV and music, which in many ways are all intertwined with each other. I really enjoy delving into the history of how all my favourite albums, films and TV programmes are made.

The 1968 Mk2 Cooper S I bought over six years ago still hits the right spot but it hasn't stopped me looking at what else is out there, there are still certain cars I'd love to own one day.

Oh the classic cars and TV issue, I found watching DVDs of say, The Sweeney or Minder as close to time travel as i could get as that is how I remember England  (err back in the 70s or 80s).

As I have the Triumphs and my friend has a S Type Jag, I just need to find a nice Rover P6 and find an industrial estate to play on.

  4. Now that is a beauty.

Wouldn't mind an Estate version myself.

    steve

Now thats the one version I have not had, hard to find here as they didn't import or assemble them. I did manage to get a couple of other private imports, 1200 Herald estate and Triumph 1300 FWD so an import big saloon estate is needed.

These make a much quieter company in the house

  6. Thought I would give the Ivatt a bash as it arrived today. Pretty simple conversion but needed to cut the end off the GBL chassis block to extend the frames under the bunker.

The old Hornby ivatt was surprisingly close dimensionally, only main difference was taller firebox to accommodate the motor and wider boiler. Thus my version is still too tall but there is almost no meat to cut away from inside to lower is a couple of mm

Now to add flush glazing from the old Hornby model and maybe whistle and safety valves from the donor.

Certainly looks like a margate model now just need a Bachmann rear truck to finish.

  7. Just picked up a GBL ivatt 2mt. Decided it will go nicely with a Hornby ivatt chassis to create a margate tank version of their ivatt mogul. Still have one spare mogul left for another k3 conversion but might try a cut down triang std 3 chassis instead if i can find a good one as. I have become attached to these Hornby ivatts for some odd reason.

  8. Sheep don't like leeks (the vegetable!) ... Some years ago, we had sheep in our garden from neighbouring field. They ate every thing they could reach Except my row of leeks, even the Herb garden was cleared including the mint!!

Yum, lambs with inbuilt mint sauce, saves on adding it later.

  9. Just picked up a lovely BR Maroon Triang princess for £20 plus postage, looked presentable in the pictures but arrived properly boxed with original packing rings and almost mint except for minor paint loss on the chimney.

Goes well with the even cheaper Hornby B12 that was described as modified/damaged but instead was weighted, repainted (very well) and detailed.
