  1. A few preservation-related discussions have crept into the Modern Scene topic so I thought I'd start a new one for preservation. To kick off, the Puffing Billy Railway will be returning Climax No.1694 to service on Saturday 8th September following a 10 year restoration. It is one of only 19 surviving Climax locos in the world and the only one built to 2'6" gauge. Cheers David
  2. Black Caviar has set another record. Fastest time from a standing start at Hawksbury River to Cowan, just on 9 minutes. By way fo comparison, the Newcastle Flyer was timed at 12½ minutes for that section with a flying start at Hawksbury River. Cheers David
  3. CF4412 in its quite striking Black Caviar livery. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pominoz68/8967952556/ Cheers David
  4. There is still a bit of mixed gauge at Moorooka/Clapham, the main line adjacent to the narrow gauge suburban lines and a 700m passing loop on the other side of the yard. The rail loading compound is also dual gauge. Moorooka yard is to be redeveloped as suburban EMU stabling. The Petrie turntable was removed in 2004. It is now stored at North Ipswich for possible installation somewhere in the workshops, which would allow the one at Ipswich station to be removed. Cheers David
  5. Moolabin is narrow gauge. Standard gauge goes to Acacia Ridge and Port of Brisbane. In the greater SEQ area there are triangles at Bethania, Thorneside, Shorncliffe, Landsborough, Yandina, Gympie North and Granchester. Plus the triangular junctions at Yeerongpilly, Dutton Park - Park Road - Buranda, Sherwood - Corinda - Tennyson line, west end of Roma Street and Bowen Hills, There are also turntables at Caboolture, Moolabin, Redbank Workshops and Ipswich, and balloon loops at Mayne, Pinkenbah and Port of Brisbane. Cheers David
  6. Here are my photos from the trip, including the unexpected sight of a loco derailed at Mayne. http://goo.gl/KQyex Cheers David
  7. At Thorneside. Not bad for a phone shot. Cheers David

  10. 974 could be doing that in September for the Carnival of Flowers if the Bettys go into the paint shop before then. There is a chance both C17s could be in Toowoomba on the same day. Cheers David
  11. The other main line certified C17 back in action. This is a very professional looking video! Cheers David
  12. The double headed 32s we have dreamed about for so long! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HryxMybIwE0 Cheers David
  13. Those are official names and are used as such in the NRM descriptions. "Household" is a very broad term and includes anybody who provides support to the Royal Family. No doubt some were used by SO14 too. Cheers David

  15. SDSR mainly runs to Stanthorpe and Wallangarra, but there is a proposed trip to Toowoomba for the Carnival of Flowers in September. Cheers David
  16. Southern Downs Steam Railway C17 971 made its first run into Toowoomba today. With QR Heritage C17 974 now back in service, there a now chance of seeing double headed C17s on the main line! Cheers David
  17. On the original HOG, the siding on the lower right is the Georgia Central interchange track. The other siding on that same section is the Norfolk Southern interchange track. They would be the logical places to put exits to low level staging. The hard part would be designing the benchwork so the layout is still portable and the tracks down to staging aren't too steep. Cheers David
  18. The HOG is designed as a beginner's layout, but you're right that a more advanced modeller could add staging. I might work on that..... Cheers David
  19. Some of you will have seen the Heart of Georgia layout. Here's a version in N using Atlas code 55 track on the same sized baseboards. Instead of #6 turnouts on the main lines and #4 on sidings on the original, this version has #10 on the main line and #7 on sidings. While it's tempting to cram in more track, personally I'd take advantage of the smaller scale to run longer trains and have more variety of scenery (especially an urban scene). As it's designed as a better beginner's layout, everything shown is available off the shelf. Cheers David
  20. Very unusual the 36 was leading. Usual practice is for the smaller loco to lead. Cheers David
