  1. Well first up i hope everyone had a very merry christmas.

     

    Not alot has been happening at Haynes End as our 5 month old has kept me very busy of late.

    a few little treats turned up over christmas in the form of some lovely Hornby blue & grey mk1s

    and a building for the back of the layout i only managed to grab a quick couple of pictures but i will try and do a new video soon.

     

    the 47 is one of my virgin heritage collection so only comes out the cabinet every now and then. you may also see that the roof has been reinstalled on the loading bay

    Great work with the PECO loading dock modelling it at an angle, like that a lot.

  2. I strangest ‘single line’ I work along is the line from Aylesbury to Claydon, you pick up an annetts key token from the machine in Aylesbury loop and head on your way however when you get to Calvert it’s not unusual to see 2 more trains/locos sat in the sidings there!

     

    They have of course been ‘locked in’ electrically within the relevant sidings with the token but it sure feels strange to be in a token section with other trains!

     

    On RETB lines you arrive at the siding using a normal token, hand that back and get a shunt token, the ground frame can only be physically opened by removing a key from the in cab token machine and inserting it into the frame, once parked up and locked in the shunt token can only be given back to the signaller with the key in the machine again (and supposedly the frame back in the normal position, but mistakes have been made!)

     

    ERTMS is a whole different beast!

    Being a 30 year plus man on the toy railway (LUL) such things are an alien environment for me, I realise my question was going to throw up all sorts of answers, so it is interesting to see the different methods NR use, thanks!

  3. Signals on a single line?!?

     

    If a branch line was just one long siding, I fully understand the principle that it would operate on the 'one engine in steam' basis, with that 'engine' carrying the token all the time it occupies the line, but let's suppose that somewhere down that line there is an engineers siding, where that 'engine' may possibly stable, how is it then signalled down the branch? Bearing in mind, that when it arrives at the aforementioned siding with, I'd imagine, the token, the crew may well stable and go home. What happens to the token? How is it then released to allow another 'engine' onto the branch, bearing in mind, the first is now off the running line?

     

    Let's also imagine that the siding is operated by a local ground frame, just to add to the fun.

     

    How does today's railway get around this?

     

    I hope my ramblings make sense, any ideas?

Interesting to see that OD disguised the rear screw in the baseplate with a spare tyre, so well disguised, it had me quite stumped at first, but a little prod or two with the craft knife revealed all. Was also concerned with the ride height of the front wheels when still in the box, fortunately, these fears were allayed once it stood on its own four wheels.

  5. A new year, RMweb back to normal working and all is well with the world !

    Thanks to Andy for all the hard work for us.

     

    I thought time to seperate my ramblings about my own collection from the Railway Motors thread, which could continue about the prototype of our models. So copying the idea from Jim S-W here is my start for the year with some recent projects off the workbench.

     

    A Dennis 2ton parcels van from the LMS of July 1934, survived long enough to be nationalised and repainted in B R livery. A whitemetal kit by John Day that had been lying unfinished for years. Now completed and numbered as 507D M, ANK15.

    A more recent kit by Frank Waller (RTI) of a Bedford KM 30cwt van as used by the Midland Region service fleet from Jan. 1952 till c1959 when it was transfered to the Eastern. A one piece body very well captured by Frank. Numbered 614S M , OAR289.

    A while back we discussed Scammel Scarabs of the two types, 3 or 6 ton. The 3 ton being bought in greater number by B R but the model manufacturers have mainly made the 6ton version, Airfix, Oxford and Corgi. The only correct 3ton version was by Bachmann, a very good model in most respects except the colour, oh why did they do it maroon, it completly spoils it. Here on the right is mine repainted to the more correct crimson and nothing else done. These are very hard to find now so another way to make 3tonners ?

    On the left in the short lived experimental grey livery, is an Oxford Scarab, with the rear wheels replaced with smaller ones, these came from a Cararama Transit and are the correct size. The wheel arches need sawing off and shortening and reprofiling before glueing back to give the desired effect. The grey one was chosen for conversion as I have no evidence of any 6ton versions carrying that livery.

  6. I have built a model Crown Court as a cameo on a scenic town section of my layout and have been trying (unsuccesfully) to find 00 figures of barristers in wigs and gowns.

     

    I suspect there aren't any and I will have to modify some suit attired figures but thought I'd ask if anyone is aware of any as it would add that individual and appropriate touch to what is hopefully a novel diorama.  

     

    I am struggling with my model of a Starbucks, can't find scale Baristas either.

  7. Hit a bit of a major drawback with the layout, in terms of size - or the lack of! - for anything longer than a 2-3 car unit. It came about when I played with the idea of a Networker delivery train but it couldn't even fit. More recently with today's purchase, the Hornby 4-VEP that has a rather irritating coupling system that forbids me from running it as a 3-car unit. Joys of a small branch terminus eh?  :scratchhead: This along with how awkward it is to set up for every running session and subsequently it has spent the past few weeks with nothing running is making me cast doubts over the layouts future. 

     

    I don't wish to dismantle the layout, a lot of hard work has gone into it. It was intended to be an experimental layout to try out a slightly more complicated track plan than what I am used to. Alas the fleet has grown recently and I would like to build a layout that can cater for more stock. Extending the layout is a no-go due to the nature of its construction.

     

    I'm playing with the idea of selling it, to fund the ''Addiscombe'' project I have planned. Also there's a faint possibility of someone who would like a small layout? 

    I'd love to, but SWMBO may have something to say about it.

    Milk is a good choice of non-passenger traffic for an urban station as the handling facilities were usually pretty compact. Unlike bulk goods, it was quite common to have bottling plants near stations (the IMS plant at Rossmore Road next to Marylebone is a favourite example). Milk trains could be fairly compact but still justify a top-link express loco. This shot shows 5014 Goodrich Castle near Wormwood Scrubs with a train of milk tanks returning to the west country from the Wood Lane bottling plant in 1957. A Castle with just 6 tankers should fit on quite a modest layout.

Hello, currently residing in the illustrious borough of Thanet, my layout that exists is St Jude http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/34091-st-jude/, the layout that is planned is Biggin Hill http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/82266-biggin-hill-tatsfield/?hl=%2Bbiggin+%2Bhill, the layouts in my head are numerous...

     

    You will see that I haven't updated in ages, due to other interests taking the lead, think I need to get my ass in gear.

  10. It's been a busy day today on the layout with the hardstanding and track weathering going on

     

    The hardstanding sections were superbly cut by Justin at Model Railway Scenery http://www.modelrailwayscenery.com/ and will be soon offered as a kit, this is pretty much a trial version with two layers being cut in 2mm mdf panels to make up to the rail height and sleeper height.

    They fit perfectly and Justin did a great job.

    Justin also printed concrete over sheets too.

     

    I'm really pleased with how it is shaping up so far

  11. Gonna be really nerdy now, the Land Rover Disco needs fluorescent yellow dots in each top corner of the front & rear windscreens to represent a ARV (Armed Response Vehicle), I believe... I know, I need to get out more. Fantastic work btw...

     

     

    I went for a more everyday London scene, but an idea for someone else could be to go full-on and model one of the Met Police armoured Ford 'Jankel' US pickup trucks with a few of the latest Counter Terrorism squad in their helmets and Robocop-style outfits as at Wembley the other year!
