Nice to hear from you again Mr Teal (John RJR) - this is my first ever attempt at a layout and it is all your fault. Watched your RJR shed layout and your "get on with it" attitude shamed me out of 6 or maybe 10 years of watching, sketching and lurking. .....I .....thank you..... my wallet wants to kill you!

I think there should be a "slot" here for great layouts that were documented as they built - like a wee archive. Your many layouts and the old "6 week layout" one - would always provide inspiration to neewbies - so much to learn by reading them through.

Roadstone - thanks but nothing much worth posting up from BWYF at the moment - just ballasting and wiring the station area - which I will photograph and load when done. So how you getting on - have you started a thread yet?

Hunslet 102 - might let you talk me into a manky blue DMU at Model Rail Scotland in 3 weeks time - you going on the Saturday?

A very tasty Western Region Namer at Haymarket ....... strange white circles. Then 2 more standard fare - although at the time the Large Logo 47 - may have been one of the earliest repaints and caught my eye.

Great news with this arrival - The quality bar just got raised again for all "Blue ones".

3 more poor quality (but old) ones from me.

One of my earliest photos showing the old barriers and signs at Queen Street probably 1979.

A view no longer possible due to the new Buchanan Galleries (shopping Centre and huge car park). Oh how I hated 47 272 and its HA pals. Time after time they looked great (check the dirt on this one) then you got the number. 208 + 272 + 273 + 268 + 269 saw them almost every day for years. Would like to see them again though.

Another view slightly later - also no longer possible and this shows the Road over bridge for Parliamentary Road - still there but squeezed between Concert Hall, Buchanan Galleries and Bus station. The glass bridge walkway inside Galleries is in roughly the same location. Check out how many Snorkel jackets and flares at platform end!

Thanks for the compliment _ I am watching your "Toton Layout" with interest - great idea. IF (and that is a big if by the way) I finish this layout and find room for a second layout - I would model Glasgow Eastfield in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the interest and kind words - much appreciated and keeps me motivated it even convinces my wife that I am not the only "strange man" in the world. Well it helps a bit anyway.

I have been scanning a few of my 1979 - 1983 photos into a wee Gallery and found this image taken at Eastfield in 1982 and this shows rather well the RED ballast I have been banging on about. The dry bits (thankfully very rare in Sunny Glasgow) are almost (whisper it) pink.

I am going for RED main lines and manky black depot - maybe I have this the wrong way round.

This is the Glasgow side of Eastfield beside the Office entrance and shows visiting 47 155 and 40 173 which from memory was parked here with it's "not to be moved" spangle for many months - maybe years. Wonder how many people were waiting for it to show up without knowing - it would never happen.

Loaded this one to the 37's noses thread.

From memory this is one of the first times I saw the modified nose with the cut back cowl, oval buffers + blanked off headcodes. yuk - glad I had no idea what was to come for the 37's in later years.

Back in the early 80's we thought the "subtle change" from full skirts, round buffers and black headcodes - ruined these engines. Looking through this thread - we had nothing to get steamed up about - the next 30 years were (in my opinion) an exercise in how to trash a decent design. Can any of them be seen as an improvement?

This old print of mine taken at Eastfield Depot on 6th August 1981 shows what I recall as the first sign of change up our way as 37's were being drafted in from East Anglia and noses were changing.

Sorry you guys had to endure much worse than this.

Not up to "the best quality" as these are now almost 30 year prints taken with a Bomb proof Praktica Camera that I must have dropped dozens of times.

Now that's more like it - my usual month between updates - and had to find myself way down on page 6

This "topics" section of RMweb is really taking off - nice and busy - new postings and layouts every day almost like the old days.

Been sorting problems this month - cut platform length so longer coaches can get round, sorted out a few alignment problems, added a few passengers, trees and tweaks - but not much worth a separate posting update - but then I fitted a few more lights.

I bought these Express street lights 18 months ago and since I am now a skint fat architect...... I got them out and they sure are good. I will have to experiment with night photos but the "atmosphere" these bring to the railway arches is pure magic in real life. I can almost feel the frost in the icy blue / grey lights - memories of sneaking around Newcastle at 2.00 am en route down to London in 1981.

40 173 was (from memory) parked here with a "do not move" spangle for months - maybe years? Nice RED Ballast

This was my second to last 20 (never did find 20 009) and arrived on shed presumably on it's way to Glasgow Works for overhaul. Nice surprise to find this on my home depot.

No comment - no excuse needed to photograph a nice clean brush.

Ok After enjoying this Thread on the last and on this version of RMweb - time for me to throw in a few photos from long ago.

Hope the quality is up to standard (in all respects) Image, photography, subject and info.

I never new anything about which train, where it was going, or why (to me that was the fun - I never knew what was coming next) and I know nothing about wagons - hope something is of interest to someone.

This is a test - not sure if "my captions" will appear so

Photo 1 is 40 068 powering up Cowlairs Bank out of Queen Street 05.05.1980 - For the record...... the tower block in the background was demolished 6 months ago and then another two last month.

Photo 2 shows 40 013 on shed at Eastfield in 27.04.81 - hiding round the side - maybe someone in England was looking for it.

Two down - plenty more if they are of interest.

Found time to try some weathering - Phoenix precision Rusty Rail and Weathered black - mixture of spray and brush. First photo shows before and after (clean bit still to be done). Then a few photos with my new wall in background, Audi advert board, and some weeds and junk started.

I think the RED is now as I wanted it to be (makes me happy anyway) and nice and oily looking.

And here is a wee link to a video on Youtube showing some general trundling from this location and some zooming in and out the tunnels.

Roadstone - I wanted RED ballast because that reminds me of certain Scottish areas (well a kind of Reddish Brown) and I wanted my main running lines to be red with my sidings and depot areas to be anything from grey to black. My turn now - can I ask who you have as an Avatar - is there a theatrical story to be told there - looks to me to be quite a scary dude - hope I am not offending you.

Profound Question now to all RMweb experts............... I can hover over each photo and I get a text block that tells me how many times each photo has been downloaded. I presume each "author" can do this for their own topics on New RMweb.

Most photos have been downloaded 2 or 3 or 6 or 9 times (thanks) but the winner is very odd. I can sort of understand why my plan has been downloaded 20 times (just wish I had taken the time to draw the thing better) ------- but the most downloaded photo is............ me with my two boys! ...............WHY?.................... do 22 people really need a new dartboard photo of a fat bloke with two grinning (but handsome) boys?

Chard - Glad you like my wee world - no worries about offending me. I like some of the spacious trains in the landscape "less is more" layouts - but that is not part of my memory - I went to cities, big stations and big depots to see locos.

Russ - yes it is a bit RED - but I will attempt weathering soon thanks.

Gingertrainspotter (great name!) Thanks - depot towers are the excellent Express Models towers. Took about 10 months to arrive but worth it. I have 6 lamp post type and 6 wall mounted as well and maybe soon I will get them wired in.

Experiment over - nothing ruined.

Quite pleased with this angle.

As mentioned on the old RMweb the architect in me - is struggling to bite the bullet and get the weathering started - "we like things nice and clean and orderly" - but again - when the ballast is toned down and some oil and track dirt added - this should look OK. (I think)

Happy to hear opinions (even bad ones) about the red ballast.

At Warley I managed to buy the only 2 wee bags of Woodlands Scenics Fine Red Ore Ballast and I have now soaked and drowned the track as it bends round past the door.

When I say drowned............... :icon_sad: :icon_sad:

Now the last time I did this - I thought it worked out quite well - but this red stuff was almost crying as I squirted on the glue and water like a mad man.

So enjoy the live show - last time I waited to see if it worked - this time............. stay tuned and if it fails .................... send Guiness :icon_cool:

Thanks 250Bob - sorry for the delay but decided a couple of pictures might help you more than the following words.................

My walls and arches are all by Scalescenes -

they make it so easy. Wish I could take the credit.

Not rocket science - just downloaded and printed onto colour printer paper then stuck onto Artists mounting board using - Prit Stick of all things and a wee bit of PVA if required. I have also used track pins through into my cork to help with the removal when required. So far so easy. I will get around to a coating of artists spray sealer (or as I learnt at Uni - hairspray) just to keep things from fading.

The photos show the arches pulled out - I built things so everything can be removed right back to baseboard in the station area. The layering and depth of relief - are all as the Scalescenes instructions - slightly tweaked to my taste.

The only advice I can offer is - industrial quantities of Scalpel blades required and try to print as many sheets as possible in one print run. I got a few shade variations from printer when I had to do more.

Sorry for the delay in replying - took my boys down to Birmingham to see Top Gear Live - just back.

McC - The Ballast so far is Woodlands Scenics fine grey (meant for N guage I think). I am hoping to find some Red Iron Oxide soon for the main running lines. Quite hard to find so far.

Tom Davidson - Glad you liked the plan. I never got around to updating it - but the changes I made during the build were mainly due to "nobody making long curved points" found out that just because I could draw them did not mean they existed!

I also deleted the 2 through roads in the station (to make more room at front for better arches and road). I was then able to put the depot access road here at the front of the layout - not under the station. I decided it would be nice to see light engine movements + the thought of shunting blind - lost it's appeal fast.I kept the track - now just a hidden storage track.

My last change was the area in front of the window and viaduct. It was not easy getting points that would allow entry and exit from depot to both main lines in each direction. I had to compromise which involves a few loco shuffles but works fine.

Good luck with your design - I look forward some day to watching yours.

I handled the transition curves by trial and error. I enclose a photo from back then.

I used 12mm MDF for my bases with 6mm cork tiles. I then cut a small piece of MDF to use as a transition piece. The large ramps were then a single strong piece and the smaller (easier to adjust) bits were then fettled. The 6mm cork sheet then ran continuous over the joints to smooth out the different angles of the base MDF.

In the picture below you can see that the main incline coming in from the right is steeper than the transition bit.

In the picture you can also see adjustable feet. This allowed small level adjustment by screw thread. I then ran a Class 47 with underbody tanks back and forward till it cleared - like I say trial and error.

From memory - at the bottom of the ramps I cut a tongue of 6mm cork and packed underneath this with offcuts and card bringing it up to the level of the sloping MDF (and I may have reduced the lower part down to only 6mm MDF to make it less of a drop onto the level board)- again the thick cork smoothed out the joints.

After all these words - you deserve a wee picture!
